Present for gender non-conforming 15 year old?

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 11/12/2021 10:48

Any ideas? I'm not meant to know about the non-conformity but am avoiding all girly things. If no ideas forthcoming I will get books, but just in case anyone has a flash of brilliance...

As a fairly gender non confirming gen-xer - can't stand handbags or purses so tend to wear a lot of hiking/photographer's vests with plenty of pockets. Same for outerwear, often men's versions (which however tend to be long in the sleeves). Or give her vouchers to have decent pockets added to off the rack women's wear?

ASushiBitMyFinger · 11/12/2021 19:31

@Tabbacus ah! Thanks Xmas Blush

ASushiBitMyFinger · 11/12/2021 19:36

On a different note, I'm loving all the suggestions on this thread. Just a huge, huge shame that it's become commonplace and acceptable to assume these are things 'gender neutral' girl would enjoy rather than any girl or boy who just happens to enjoy them. It highlights how ridiculous all this gender stuff is.

Keepitmum · 11/12/2021 19:42

All depends what the person enjoys, if you get a gift that the person will want or use does it have to be symbolic? how much you want to spend?. I would always get a thoughtful present for anyone so I always find out thier interests then I get something to do with it. My son loves gaming so he really appreciates anything to do with his Xbox like a new controller, credit or a new console. He even likes getting gaming clothes. Like an Xbox tee shirt. He's only seven and I doubt he has questioned his sexuality yet. So this may all change when he's older.

This thread is great for present ideas!
My DCs don't have gender identities but I'm always on the look out for cool presents that don't play up to gender stereotypes.

toolazytothinkofausername · 11/12/2021 19:51

Converse - worn by all :D

50ShadesOfCatholic · 11/12/2021 19:57

@coffeetofunction

I'm not sure how they identify has any really impact on buying gifts. I have a 15yo that identifies as a girl and I would just buy her want I know she will enjoy. I'm unsure really why your family member identify as N-B even comes into the equation?
Oh it's so easy to be dismissive but if you look at any, and Iean any, gift ideas thread for say a teenage girl on here, they are hugely gendered.

OP Lego is huge for teens. Also LED lights. Most teens appreciate a new top too

SSOYS · 11/12/2021 20:11

Another vote for Lego- they have some really fantastic sets which I think would appeal to any teen- I’ve bought the bonsai tree for my goddaughter and it looks amazing.

Decimator · 11/12/2021 20:14

How about a Kate Tempest poetry book? Apparently they (Kate) are right up there with Byron and Wordsworth!

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 11/12/2021 22:40

Those hoodies are very cool OP, the kind of thing my almost-11 would covet!

Plantsandpuddlesuits · 12/12/2021 02:09

My eldest is a girl, and a bit younger but not into stereotypical female things. We and other family members have got her things i think would appeal to boys and girls.....

Animal adoption gift thing
Pyjamas and slippers
Lava lamp
Coffee shop vouchers
Non fiction books
Houseplants

Woolandwonder · 12/12/2021 02:22

I've bought a friends gender non confirming teen
Mini rainbow lights for bedroom, mug and hot chocolate bomb.

DogFacedWoman · 12/12/2021 02:27

Lego. Everyone loves Lego, just some don't know it yet.

Nat6999 · 12/12/2021 03:08

Ds is gay & I'm buying him
A ring light
Pyjamas
Heated Blanket
Socks
Gloves
Notebooks
Toiletries
Electric toothbrush.

worriedatthemoment · 12/12/2021 12:20

Find out what they like and buy them those things , i again don't see how gender etc comes into it
I have 2 boys , they are sporty etc but wouldn't appreciate a golf club as they don't like golf ,
Surely its all about buying a present someone likes , i wear minimal make up so would be suprised if anyone bought me make up as they wouldn't see me wear it , my friends and family would know this and know i would much rather a hat of my local football team etc

worriedatthemoment · 12/12/2021 12:21

I really can't see why people are saying they buy xyz because there child is gay , non binary etc etc
Just buy what someone likes or into surely whatever sexuality/ gender or otherwise they are
Not all gay people want rainbow stuff , like not all boys want a football or girls want make up

50ShadesOfCatholic · 12/12/2021 12:35

My thoughts entirely. It's weird af.
bonfireheart · 12/12/2021 14:20

Agree @worriedatthemoment

VestaTilley · 12/12/2021 14:47

Children should just be bought the things they’re in to - whether that’s cars, games, trains, dolls, music, etc. I hate the idea that dolls are for girls and cars for boys - it’s nonsense and is what’s leading to a generation feeling trapped by these stereotypes.

Just ask her parents what she’s in to- which books? Which author? Clothes from a shop she likes? An experience she’d like to do?

GeoffsColdron · 12/12/2021 14:54

Is there a connection between your ds' sexuality and this Christmas gift list? If not, why mention it? Genuinely curious.
bonfireheart · 12/12/2021 14:55

Also how do you ensure the toiletries are non-binary because they do tend to be male/female targeted. Even pyjamas are.

gogohm · 12/12/2021 14:58

Unisex fragrance, hoodie/sweatshirt from appropriate teen approved brand,

LolaSmiles · 12/12/2021 15:02

I'd take the same approach that I take when buying presents for any relative: buy them something that fits their interests.

If someone likes going to the gym, fitness gifts are good regardless of their sex or how they identify. If someone likes books then buy books in their preferred genre, no gender identity or genitals required

I've never asked my relatives whether I should adjust my buying based on their gender identity. They just get presents that match their interests because most people don't subscribe to silly limited gender stereotypes.
