If you work in an office what time will you finish Xmas eve? I seem to have meetings all afternoon so I won't finish until 5 which seems really late . I'm hoping they get cancelled. Are you working normal time Xmas eve?

Normally around noon but tomorrow is I'm telling my teams they can have the 24th off and to set their out of office before they go home on the 23rd. They all deserve a break! They can cascade this down obviously too.

thesockfromtheroof · 09/12/2021 23:53

I'm supposed to finish at 430 but in past years they've decided to finish around 2. On the day.

Not very helpful but still appreciated

tankcrossing · 10/12/2021 00:44

6pm on Christmas Eve and again 6pm on boxing day, retail sucks

Ellmau · 10/12/2021 00:50

Normally lunch time, but this year we've got the day off.

Hathertonhariden · 10/12/2021 01:04

Between 5-7pm. It's a normal Friday for me

inawe · 10/12/2021 01:14

We were all told in the summer that the organisation was closing at 12 on the 24th and opening on the 4th.

Three weeks ago they said it had been decided to stay open and wanted volunteers to work until 6 on Christmas Eve and the following Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Well, fuck that for a game of soldiers!

The plans to reopen have been quietly shelved as it was truly astonishing just how many staff had made plans to visit relatives 300 miles away. (I should add that we have all had to take annual leave for the closure, and people genuinely had made plans).

It's another example of tone-deaf management not having a clue how badly a decision like that affects staff morale. Or simply not caring. With the rate we've been haemorrhaging staff this year you'd think they'd have realised how unhappy people are.

KateInHappyland · 10/12/2021 01:20

About 12:30.

Blossom64265 · 10/12/2021 05:23

My office is technically open, but most of the staff take the day as annual leave. If someone tried to schedule a meeting it would not be well received.

KatherineJaneway · 10/12/2021 05:28

If I work Christmas Eve I finish at lunchtime. The expectation is you go home or don't return after lunch. Last year they said finish at 1pm.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 10/12/2021 05:39

I'm not working it this year as it falls on my day off but it's nomally between 8 and 10pm.

Someaddedsugar · 10/12/2021 06:43

Can I be nosy - for those of you who finish on before Christmas and return after new year, do you have to take that as leave or are you given those days by the company?

ilovebagpuss · 10/12/2021 07:07

We used to finish about 1 Christmas Eve but this year the company is closing a few days before so have asked people to take leave. I have taken a week unpaid and a week paid so I finish when the kids break up.
This is a huge treat for me as I’ve not had any hols since summer and I usually work up to Christmas Eve.
I cannot wait to just finish next Friday and leave it all behind for a bit.
I know the week unpaid will be a bit painful but I don’t care. I’m knackered and have had Covid and nasty colds and just want to stop.

I have only ever worked 2 Christmas Eves in 35 years, one in banking which was a nightmare and the other at a company where they ran the morning production shift and insisted the admin staff were in or booked leave, then at the end on the shift there was a cheap buffet and the raffle was drawn, followed by a speech from the MD. It was a complete waste of a day as zero work was done or needed in the office.
This year our main company announced that the annual holiday starts at 5pm on 23rd and runs to 4th, holiday does have to be used for the shutdown. Our division is run by an incompetent director and we can’t do a full shutdown as we have support contracts that cover 365 days. We have asked for clarification as to what is expected, who is covering what but he has yet to confirm. I have booked the 24th as leave and fortunately work from home so can cover the other days if he decides we need to.

We are given the days - it's a university so it shuts down over that period. We are also given an extra few days for the Easter closure too. These days are all on top of the 27 days (plus bank holidays) leave that we already get.
Hollyhocksarenotmessy · 10/12/2021 07:39

Public sector so usual time.

Most jobs I've had let you off about an hour early. Many years ago I had a twatty boss who made a massive thing about letting us off 15 minutes early, woo hoo.

wendz86 · 10/12/2021 13:13

Normally about 12 but they have given it as an extra day off this year .

SpinsForGin · 10/12/2021 13:18

We are given the days. I work at a university and we shut at 6pm on 22nd and reopen on the 4th Jan. This is in addition the 37 days annual leave (not including bank hols) academic staff get.

DragonMamma · 10/12/2021 13:22

We have been given the 24th off as a freebie. So we finish on the 23rd and go back on the 4th using a mixture of just office closures and mandatory holidays. I don’t mind - the Christmas break is the only one I really relax on.

lockdownalli · 10/12/2021 13:23

I finish lunchtime Christmas Eve and go back after New Year.

To answer your question @Someaddedsugar, it's all paid and none of it comes out of my holiday allowance. It's additional annual leave above and beyond contracted entitlement.

Legal Sector.

DropYourSword · 10/12/2021 13:24

I’m mandated to take 3 weeks annual leave over Christmas and New Year. Perfect for Christmas school holidays as I have a young child but a bit of a bugger for taking leave much of the rest of the year!

WeAllHaveWings · 10/12/2021 13:28

Current job I work more hours Mon-Thu to finish at 12 on a Friday.

It doesn't always work that way, but for the 24th I've already booked out the afternoon so no-one can put a sneaky meeting in!

CoffeeRunner · 10/12/2021 13:30

6.30pm.

GP surgery. Already lots of patients booked in for the afternoon.

NMC2022 · 10/12/2021 13:36

We are open until 6pm on the 23rd then back in at 7.30am on the 29th

dustandfluf · 10/12/2021 13:36

Not an office but a hospital department with outpatient provision. Our office closes at 3pm on 24th and back open on the 29th. The rest of the department is 24/7 so we work all through.

itwasntaparty · 10/12/2021 13:38

Unofficially, lunch time.
