Whatever happened to mesh Christmas stockings?

Not the Ann Summers kind. The ones that were like a selection box, full of chocolate bars. Like the ones in this picture. I've just realised I haven't seen one since about 1989. Where did they go? When did they stop making them and why must they stop making all the things that were brilliant in the 80s?

Whatever happened to mesh Christmas stockings?

They still do them for pets. They were a bugger to open.

evilharpy · 09/12/2021 18:03

I might buy my cat one. Although he prefers Pringles to Dreamies these days.

They probably got rid of them because you can see the size of the chocolate in it. So no getting away with putting in fun sized Mara bars etc 😂

KristinAmandaThomas · 09/12/2021 18:04

Oh OP thanks so much for posting this. The one with the revels and the topic in, my lovely nana used to buy each of her grandchildren that one every Christmas. Such happy memories. She died last year, and it’s many years since she laid hands on one of those beauties for us but seeing the pic brings it all back 😊

mam0918 · 09/12/2021 20:13

you still get them for pets.

I don't know why they originally stopped but I doubt they will restart as everyone seems to want rid of 1 use plastics not more of it when you can have a perfectly good 'proper' reusable stocking.

elQuintoConyo · 09/12/2021 20:27

I make my own:

Cardboard
Orange/mandarin bags
Chocolate of choice
Funny drawing of FC or some reindeer
Few staples

Ta-da!

You could put chocs/sweets in to match the recipient (one child I know hates chic, but loves marshmallows, for example).

Iamthewombat · 09/12/2021 20:30

Haha you had me at the first sentence OP!

Yeah, what DID happen to them? My theory is, they were replaced by the flow wrapped (food industry technical term) mini selection boxes, because they were cheaper to package. Yet even they have disappeared. What is going on???

rrhuth · 09/12/2021 20:31

Oh yes I remember these! Thank you OP Xmas Smile

Bubble54 · 09/12/2021 21:15

Oh I loved those stockings! I always buy myself the cardboard box stocking shape ones but they're not the same.... 🥴

MissyB1 · 09/12/2021 21:19

IKnowAPlace · 09/12/2021 21:28

I had them in the 90s!

WhatDidISayAlan · 09/12/2021 21:33

We used to reuse ours as our stockings every year, until my mum made us proper ones with a pattern from Woman’s Weekly!

Flyingbymypants · 09/12/2021 21:37

I loved Treets. Happy days.

DappyApple · 09/12/2021 21:41

This is a genius idea, I'm stealing it!
Samedaysame · 09/12/2021 21:46

Ah yes happy memories

AnotherMansCause · 09/12/2021 21:50

The chocolate bars are too small these days, they would look half empty or the stockings would have to be a lot smaller.

I actually saw some stockings similar in Costco yesterday. Large cardboard backed stocking with a mesh front filled with rows of snack sized choc bars etc. with sweets in the bottom. They were about £18, quite large though. Will see if I can find a link to show you.

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 09/12/2021 22:15

I used to get those for Christmas too, back in the early 70's. They need to bring them back.

LizzieSiddal · 09/12/2021 22:16

Oh those were the days Xmas Grin

They should bring them back, made with string they are much more environmentally friendly!

Ichangedmynameonce · 09/12/2021 22:26

I ask this every year. Loved them . Christmas isn't the same without them!
