A baby’s first Christmas present - which heirloom type toy?

I have a beautiful new baby girl and I want to get her a heirloom type soft toy which I know she won’t play with yet but I’d like to show her that it was her first Christmas present.
I like the Maileg mice, the little Dutch rag dolls and that type of thing. I’d like it to be suitable from birth of 12+ months ideally but it doesn’t matter if not. It’s more to put away for her so I can show her what I brought her for her first Christmas!
Can anyone recommend or help me decide pleaseV

Hamley's bear with 2021 on the foot?

Ponoka7 · 03/12/2021 17:01

I think that it would be more special if she could play with it and you had pictures. Otherwise you bought it to put away. My adult children, 23-35 still have ordinary, but slightly more expensive teddies from special occasions. The little Dutch ragdolls would be perfect.

The Hamleys bear is a fab idea.
I do really like the Dutch dolls, are they special enough? Have never brought from there before.

I got mine a Steiff teddy - one of the cuddly ones designed for younger children. Less than a year on it was happily her favourite of many stuffed toys she has been given. Also a lovely book of nursery rhymes, which she's still too young for (we're still strictly on board books!) but hopefully she'll love that it was inscribed for her first Christmas in years to come

Leah2005 · 03/12/2021 17:13

My first thought was steiff too.

Olliesocks · 03/12/2021 17:18

Another vote for Steiff. Doesn’t have to be a teddy bear, they do all sorts of animals.

We didn't do a soft so for DD's first Christmas, we got a wedgewood Christmas tree decoration. The change the animal each year, ours was a Teddy and this year is a polar bear.
For her 2nd Christmas, we got a bauble made with her footprint on it, her name and the year

How about a special ornament for the tree. All my DDs have their own ornaments that they now put up each year.

EcoCustard · 03/12/2021 17:31

Ours all got a Steiff bear for their first Christmas. We got the soft jointed bears and they are are played with, been away with us, days out etc. Eldest Ds’s bear has a stain above his eye from where he fell off the see saw at the park, DD’s has stitches from were the dog had a nibble. When the time comes they will be kept, put away and maybe come out for their children should they have them or just for memories.

If anyone is interested and it is only 6 minutes long there is a video on Margarete Steiff. I didn't know she had contracted polio and learned to adapt to her disabilities.

I would buy a Steiff soft toy plus a plastic bauble so that the bauble is something they get to put on the tree when they are older.

Steiff bears are beautiful.
Also jellycat soft toys are adorable. Mine love them.

I have bought several of these for newborns (not mine I hasten to add) I think they are a lovely compromise because babe can have it, chew it, dribble on it (they are washable) but also they are durable and quality as well as a "name" I think its a bit sad to buy a child's toy that they can't have.

For mines first Christmas we got (to last years) a personalised Christmas Eve box, personalised stocking and personalised Santa plate. So every year it has lovely memories and new pictures with them on every year.

Also Christmas baubles with hand/ foot prints and dated.

I loved a little floppy Stieff elephant we found when I was pregnant with DS2 but we were too tight to buy it for him in the end :o oh well. He's latched onto a toy Sully that someone got him from Disneyland Paris.

Floralnomad · 04/12/2021 20:30

My son got a push along dog ( Bob ) for his first Christmas , he’s lovely and we still have him , son is 28 now .

HerculesMulligan · 04/12/2021 20:35

My daughter has some Maileg mice (suitcase, matchbox and the Princess and the Pea which was formerly mine) and a lovely bear from Liberty.

AnaVanda · 04/12/2021 20:44

Steiff cosy year bear. They have the year on their foot and suitable for small children as they are made from polyester so washable and not mohair like more expensive steiff bears. I have bought them for all my grandchildren and they are much loved.

lulalalala · 04/12/2021 21:03

My Mum bought my two kids bears from Merrythought. I have one as does my Mum. They are made in the UK and can be personalised. But they have other animals too. Would definitely recommend them!

thickthighs73 · 04/12/2021 21:04

Another thumbs up for a Steif

saleorbouy · 04/12/2021 21:19

Steiff animal.
A bear made from offcuts from baby grows.
My DD has one with her name and DOB on its foot.

Hesma · 04/12/2021 21:22

Both my girls got a Harris’s teddy of their birth year for their first Christmas

MyCatHatesWhiskas · 04/12/2021 21:26

Personally I’d get her a soft toy for her cot and for something to be an heirloom present, I’d go for a Grimms Rainbow. Beautiful and gets played with!

Vodkaandgingerale · 04/12/2021 23:12

I got a Paddington bear in red wellies and loved it

Benjaminsniddlegrass · 04/12/2021 23:24

I think Merrythought teddy's are the most beautiful and are UK made - but then I'm a Shropshire girl so biased. My DD has a beautiful Merrythought teddy with her name and DOB embroidered on it's foot that we keep more for display in her bedroom and another she is currently cuddling in bed right now.
