I'd love to hear about charities you are thinking of supporting this year if you do a Christmas effort on that front. Time, money, donations of any kind - just wondered who has your thoughts at this time and why.

I donate to Crisis Skylight in memory of my late husband because he had better support from them than any other organisation.

I donate to the school that I am a governor of. 70% FSM.
I used to give to rotary, local church etc but realised they ended up at our school.
We have a BIG Christmas event and make sure that every child gets gifts on Christmas Day.

Look at the your local schools FSM on GIAS and chose 1.

Salvation Army.

Every Christmas, think they do a fantastic job ( I am not at all religious) they cover all bases for me.

Family Holiday Association. Send families facing tough times ( illness, bereaved, rebuilding after domestic abuse, families rebuilding in new shapes eg kinship care) on a UK holiday. Fun and memories bit the break so many need to be able to take a breath, think and rebuild. They're really small and have such an impact for the families they help. Families have to be low income and referred.

sepsisandAKI · 29/11/2021 21:41

Adopt-a-Child. Great work overseas

Reduceddutiesboredom · 29/11/2021 21:45

Social bites - I think a fiver buys a Christmas dinner for someone, but they do great work all year round.
Action for children - excellent children charity, offering support to lots of cohorts, amazing.

BadgerWatch · 29/11/2021 21:53

The Silverline, their volunteers will be answering the phone on Christmas Day (as they do every other day) to older people who have no-one else to talk to.

Proudboomer · 29/11/2021 22:30

I have a monthly standing order to the hospice that cared for my late husband and at Christmas I donate usually around what I would have spent on his Christmas present but a bit less this year as my car needs some work in the new year to pass it’s MOT so I need to hold some back for that.
I will also put a few extra bits in the food bank collection at Tesco when I do my December big shop next week.

Redsquirrel5 · 30/11/2021 07:03

I already give to:
Guide Dogs but buy the Christmas tickets too.
World Vision and have a new child to write too.
Cancer Research
Donkey Sanctuary but that is for a child.
Church that I go to and SVP food bank I will put some Christmas goodies in there.

This year I have been doing the Cumbria Way Scarf challenge and I will be sending seven or eight to the homeless and Women ‘s Refuges.

PurpleParrotfish · 30/11/2021 07:23

The Crisis at Christmas appeal - I have a friend who usually volunteers there.
And Doctors Without Borders (Medecins Sans Frontieres) who work in some of the most desperate places on earth.
Probably a charity for refugees too.

Do this every year
I volunteer at our local food bank it's surprising the stories of people who've found themselves in this situation

SandysMam · 30/11/2021 07:27

Some great charities here!

I donate to kidney care uk and kidney research uk as I have kidney failure and need a kidney transplant. Kidney disease affects millions of people (more now with Covid sadly) and yet it is fairly underfunded area and not as widely publicised as cancer or diabetes. They are really good charities in my opinion and from what I can see, use the money well.

SylviaTrench · 30/11/2021 07:33

Mountain Rescue, because if they get a shout the volunteers will leave their own families on Christmas Day, let their Christmas dinner go cold, and attempt to rescue people in need.
