My mum bought a little set of tree decorations like this. On the back of the box is written "1/6p each or 8/6p the set" so before decimalisation in 1971. Nothing fancy, just little plastic figures but with sweet faces, better than in the picture.
She gave them to me and I have cherished them; she died in 1993.
Every year they were the first items to go on the tree, and to come off and be replaced in their box. They survived even the occasion when the DSs pulled the tree over in search of a chocolate decoration on a high branch. Just a bit of glue needed on one set of wings and a violin.
Then when taking down the tree in 2019, I could only find five. Absolutely no sign of the other. The most likely explanation was that our dear cleaner had knocked it off, and thrown away the broken bits. I never challenged her on this.
I looked frequently on EBay and Etsy, but could not find a set being sold in the UK, and prices from the US were very high and with excessive postal charges.
Last Christmas I told DIL about the angel saga and how sad I was. Because of the connection with Mum and the years of angelic presence, I was irrationally upset at the loss.
A week or two later a packet arrived from the US. DIL had found and ordered exactly the same Angels for me.
This weekend I was able to hang up the five remaining originals plus six new ones.
We are very lucky to have such a thoughtful and affectionate DIL. I hope nothing will prevent her, DS and DGS staying with us for Christmas this year.
