A nice, if long, Christmas story involving our DIL.

My mum bought a little set of tree decorations like this. On the back of the box is written "1/6p each or 8/6p the set" so before decimalisation in 1971. Nothing fancy, just little plastic figures but with sweet faces, better than in the picture.

She gave them to me and I have cherished them; she died in 1993.

Every year they were the first items to go on the tree, and to come off and be replaced in their box. They survived even the occasion when the DSs pulled the tree over in search of a chocolate decoration on a high branch. Just a bit of glue needed on one set of wings and a violin.

Then when taking down the tree in 2019, I could only find five. Absolutely no sign of the other. The most likely explanation was that our dear cleaner had knocked it off, and thrown away the broken bits. I never challenged her on this.

I looked frequently on EBay and Etsy, but could not find a set being sold in the UK, and prices from the US were very high and with excessive postal charges.

Last Christmas I told DIL about the angel saga and how sad I was. Because of the connection with Mum and the years of angelic presence, I was irrationally upset at the loss.

A week or two later a packet arrived from the US. DIL had found and ordered exactly the same Angels for me.

This weekend I was able to hang up the five remaining originals plus six new ones.

We are very lucky to have such a thoughtful and affectionate DIL. I hope nothing will prevent her, DS and DGS staying with us for Christmas this year.

What a lovely story!! How kind of her. You are both very lucky x

TrickyD · 28/11/2021 11:43

Thank you for all your kind thoughts!

Sorry, OhPeeQueue, they are dotted around the tree, but they are just the same apart from having slightly darker coloured robes.

MarleneDsEye, and NC101NC, you have got me going weepy now.

Yes, gogohm, nothing evil about DIL. DS is a very lucky man. She is also a wonderful mother. A blessing to our family.

What a beautiful story OP! Could be the central plot of a movie. She sounds like a very thoughtful DIL. I hope you all have a wonderful Xmas together.

Lump in my throat @TrickyD. You are obviously very fortunate in your daughter in law, as am I. Our sons chose well!

JudgeRindersMinder · 28/11/2021 12:45

That was such a lovely thing to do….also lovely to hear you speak so warmly of her, and not just because of the angels
