Most dramatic version of O Holy Night?

MyLordWizardKing · 27/11/2021 20:40

Every year, my festive period begins the same way; trying to find my favourite version of O Holy Night for my Christmas playlist, and getting overwhelmed by the sheer amount of renditions there are out there. I'm looking for a cover that is particular dramatic, perhaps bordering on evangelistic aggression by the last chorus. Any suggestions?

(nb: obviously, Eric Cartman's version is already on my list. I just need a more 'traditional' one too)

Nat King Cole is incomparable imo

Arren12 · 27/11/2021 20:42

Celine dion

Came on here just to mention the South Park version. Never fails to bring me joy. I hope you find what you're looking for OP!

CelticPromise · 27/11/2021 20:44

Mahalia Jackson.

GrouchyKiwi · 27/11/2021 20:45

Josh Groban's is the best.

Definitely agree that Celine's is overwrought so might fit what you're looking for. Andrea Bocelli can sometimes be in the same vein. He must have a version. Il Divo?

Maybe for something slightly different the Mormon Tabernacle Choir (if they have a version)?

I love Maria's version but know she's not everyone's cup of tea!

StepIntoXmas · 27/11/2021 20:46

Mariah* 🙈

MichelleScarn · 27/11/2021 20:46

The Home Alone version?

RicherThanYew · 27/11/2021 20:47

The Home Alone one is astoundingly beautiful but Christmas is not complete without Eric Cartman and his dulcet tones.

Joolsin · 27/11/2021 20:47

A friend's singing teacher, Deirdre Masterson, has just released a version and she's raising funds for cystic fibrosis charity.

boilerprob · 27/11/2021 20:47

I like Mario Lanza.

Xanadu58 · 27/11/2021 20:48

I love the il Divo version

Celine’s version has always made goosebumps appear on my arms!
And Mariah makes good use of her 8 octaves Grin

LMBoston · 27/11/2021 20:49

Cara Dillon’s version makes the hairs stand up for me. At first I thought it was a bit wet... now I think it’s beautiful. I’m getting old and soppy Grin

ballsdeep · 27/11/2021 20:51

Josh groban

RebornRebound · 27/11/2021 20:53

The Bastille version, try it.

LadyEggs · 27/11/2021 20:54

O Holy Night is my Christmas ear worm! Lasts the whole season (good job I love it). I'm another one for the Home Alone version Grin

Pinkywoo · 27/11/2021 20:57

Jonathan Antoine has done a lovely version. I also love the Home Alone version and Cartman's!

nodtik · 27/11/2021 20:59

Bastille's version:

Just awesome 👏

I found this version really moving. It's a woman singing in a subway station in America.

Ididanamechange · 27/11/2021 21:00

Oh this is my favourite Christmas song. I really like the Andy Williams version. Its not in the least bit dramatic though but his voice is just so smooth and lovely.

Next to that, its close call between Celine and josh groban but I think maybe Celine just pips him with the amazing 'noooooeeeeeelllllllleeeeeeee' that she holds at the end.

bambi1132 · 27/11/2021 21:00

Celine Dion

Tillymintpolo · 27/11/2021 21:02

Bros ! I loved Matt’s warbling as a teen

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 27/11/2021 21:02

Try . French lyrics, but definitely the feeling you're after!

A580Hojas · 27/11/2021 21:03

O Holy Night is I think sung best by a gospel choir.
