A really fun board/card game that can be played by two and doesn't involve drinking!

For my adult dsis (in recovery) and her 17 year old dd, just a fun thing to play over Christmas. I love board games but sadly my family don't [cry] so I am not very up to speed with what's out there. I think they have CArds Against Humanity.

Exploding kittens is brill.

Kikkomam · 19/11/2021 10:07

I actually think they have that! But thank you

There are loads but the best place to look is boardgamegeek.com they even have a gift guide at the moment! Seldom had a bad recommendation from there.

For two people I think co-operative games are best as versus games often aren't balanced for two.

Kikkomam · 19/11/2021 10:18

Thank you. Boardgames geek is impossible to navigate if you don't actually play boardgames and the most popular are for very serious, well, boardgame geeks. Was more hoping for a personal recommendation of something fun and easy to play

Jaipur is nice and simple to get the hang of and satisfying with just 2 players (although more can play)
here

imnotacelebritygetmeoutofhere · 19/11/2021 10:22

We have got back into Yahtzee (first played this in the 80s!). It's fun and easily works for two people or more.

PooWillyNameChange · 19/11/2021 10:24

Came to suggest exploding kittens but if they already have it I think there are some add ons you can buy?

Or settlers of catan?

Rummikub

Haus1234 · 19/11/2021 10:24

Patchwork, Shotten Totten and Splendour and both good for 2 players

TopCatsTopHat · 19/11/2021 10:26

Fluxx is brill. Never the same game twice.

Miller2021 · 19/11/2021 10:26

Another vote for Monopoly Deal - I'm not a big fan of Monopoly the board game, but the card game is brilliant and addictive, husband and I have wasted many an evening playing it.

Also, Sushi Go is lovely - nice quick gameplay and beautifully illustrated cards. Both are good for two players.

Momniscient · 19/11/2021 10:27

There a plenty of two-player boardgames out there, so have no fear. Really depends what other games they like. Some thoughts off the top of my head that work well as 2-player: Splendor, Carcasonne, Agricola, Cobra Paw, Codenames (Duet version), Azul, Lanterns, Mastermind, Battleships, Mapominoes, Ticket to Ride, Imohtep, The Bloody Inn, Dragon Castle......

Maybe see if you can go into an actual boardgame shop so that you can get some in-person recommendations?

Sp1ke3 · 19/11/2021 10:29

Ticket to Ride is excellent and works well for 2 players. Also Dobble is good but can get a bit frantic (we’ll it does when I play with my daughter!)

MonkeyPuddle · 19/11/2021 10:29

Not a board game but Yahtzee the dice game is brilliant. Quick, easy to pick up, worlds fab with two players. Me and DP often have a few rounds once the kids are in bed.

Kikkomam · 19/11/2021 10:29

Great suggestions thank you so much. I wish my own family enjoyed games Sad

Bananagram is good
Cribbage (you just need a pack of playing cards). DH and I spend hours playing crib on hols
In fact what about a book of games to play with playing cards?
Dominoes
Scrabble
Yahtzee - just need 5 dice

BlueChampagne · 19/11/2021 10:39

Fluxx is best with a minimum of 3 players. There are lots of big and excellent board games out there that can be played by two or more, but it depends how much you want to spend.

2 player board games
Agricola (all creatures big and small)
Caverna (cave vs cave)
Catan 2 player (card game)
Carcasonne (the castle)
Patchwork
Hive

Card games: Bezique, Jaipur and Cribbage are popular here.

Agree that Boardgamegeek comes into its own when you have some games to look up.

Zatu Games is brilliant - they have a shop in Norwich I think and their website is very comprehensive. You sort by Zatu rating or filter by various other categories.

Carcassonne is great and for two players we also like Uno Flip, Sushi Go, Dragonwood (all the Gamewright games are brilliant), and Timeline.

Shut The Box

MakkaPakkas · 19/11/2021 10:52

Odin's ravens is my favourite. Beautiful artwork, games last max 20 mins, there's strategy but also chance involved.

SwanMother · 19/11/2021 10:54

Unstable unicorns. A bit confusing at first very fun when you get into it.
