Where to eat in Edinburgh near kings theatre

We've booked the panto at kings theatre and was hoping for some restaurant recommendations

We are staying in the centre of Edinburgh so hoping to either eat near the theatre or York place area

It needs to be suitable for children (9&6) and ideally not overly expensive, maybe £20 adults, £10 kids sort of budget

I'd like to be able to book rather than walk in

Any suggestions?

York Place to the Kings is a fairly big walk as they aren't close together but near York Place is St Andrew Square where there are restaurants like Amarone for pizza and pasta.

There is a Wetherspoons on George Street and also one on Waverley Bridge.

Closer to the Kings you would find places like Montpeliers in Bruntsfield. Wagamama on Lothian Road or plenty of cafes and coffee shops.

You would also have a choice of places if you walked via the Royal Mile so the Filling Station or The Elephant House which is on George IV Bridge if it's open again after the fire.

It depends on what food everyone likes.

Loads of eateries in Lothian, a 5 min walk from the king's.

Plenty of Italian restaurants with lunch/pre theatre deals. Cosmo if you have kids that like different food.

I took my kids to the pizza place in the St James a couple of weeks ago. Fresh pizzas, very reasonable and quick service. Everyone liked it.

That should say lots of eateries in Lothian Road

Great Indian restaurant "Tuk tuk Indian Street food" directly opposite and a few others up and down that area

takethattime do you think we'll need a taxi? I have a disability and struggle walking more than about 10 mins at a time, I didn't realise it was far away

Cosmo looks lovely but it's not in the right direction for us

We'd want somewhere around York place or the theatre, or on the walk in between to break it up

Yes it’s a long walk. If I were you, I’d eat at Amarone, Wahaca or Franco Manca en route to the taxi rank on Waverley Bridge just outside the station.

It’s a really long walk and some of it uphill, I’d not even consider it! You can get buses from Princes St though. At the moment in Edinburgh you really must book if it’s a Friday or Saturday for dinner.

What kind of food do you like?

OP, I'd not bother with that walk and I like a walk. If it's the only bus of the day, looking at an Uber or a Taxi as the bus for four of you could cost more. Lothian buses website will help here. It's been a long time since I was on the bus in Edinburgh.

The kings theatre is about a 40min walk from York Place at a decent pace.

Halfway - 20min walk - Vittoria on the Bridge. Delicious and reasonably priced. Handy for the museum if your filling up the day.

Are you confused between the playhouse and the kings as the playhouse is very near York place?
It is quite a long walk, so you might need a taxi or the number 11 bus will also take you there. There is a stop at the top of leith walk, near York place.

Paolozzis is good - pizza/pasta, it's on Lauriston Place, about a 10 min walk to the King's. There are quite a few places on Lothian Road which are closer - such as Topolabamba if you and your kids like Mexican inspired food.

Yes Topolabamba is really nice, reasonable too

The frozen mango margaritas are rather nice!

We loved Makars gourmet mash bar when we went. In fact just reminiscing about it yesterday with our server in a restaurant in London, who was from Edinburgh. 12 mins walk away on google maps!

Ndaba is great, tapas style but with Scottish and South African influence. Not sure if it might top end of your budget, but we love it and it's close to the King's.

If you like Thai food, Absolut Thai round the corner from the Kings Theatre is the best, BYO as well, not fancy though but better than the unnamed expensive Thai restaurant nearby. Failing that loads on Lothian Road which is on a direct bus route or about a 10 minute walk at a regular pace. There is an old style Italian there Bar Italia , which your DCs might enjoy.

The omni centre and st James quarter are both very close to York Place
Lothian Road and Bruntsfield are close the kings theatre and there are lots of lovely restaurants there.
York place is a long walk away from the kings theatre tho, especially if you struggle walking any distance.

Is it Beauty and The Beast you’re going to see? That’s on at The Playhouse, lovely and close to York Place and then Cosmos!

Paolozzis is great, or if you like burgers Bread Meats Bread is about 5 min away from kings

Would it be crazy to think about the Wetherspoons on George street before we have some food? Will it be absolutely crazy busy at say 4.30 on a Tuesday?

Ok you are at the playhouse it sounds like then, not Kings. Which makes more sense for York place.

I wouldn't bother heading up to weatherspoons. Plenty places nearer. Taste of Italy for cheap and cheerful, or there are other Indian and Turkish, middle Eastern places around the theatre. I have heard the food court place at st James (bonnie and wild) is good for choice for everyone. Not been up since it opened but if you look online you should get an idea.
