Anyone Want to do a Lapland Check in?

Travelling to Lapland in three weeks and counting. First time we’ve been. Anyone want to check in, where you’re going and/or when? What have you packed? Anything I need to know to take? I haven’t told my kids yet, what’s the best way to do it?

I hope you have an amazing time. We went a few years back and have really happy memories. We were at Luosto in Finland with Canterbury Travl, and it was magical. Where are you off to?

MrBeagles · 14/11/2021 18:03

How lovely! I'll watch from afar if that's ok? Going next year with Canterbury travels as DS2 hasn't been.

Went to saraaselka in 2016 and it was magical. Easily one of the best holidays ever. You're in for a treat!

MrBeagles · 14/11/2021 18:06

Oh pack snacks. Finland doesn't grow much and the food is basic. Older DS would be fine as hell eat anything but some kids might appreciate some foodie treats.

If your luggage allowance is generous pack a bottle of wine too. Pricey in Finland

We are hopefully going this year. Not told our daughter in case COVID nixes it.

IncessantNameChanger · 14/11/2021 18:15

How exciting I would love to do this next year so I'm going to join in to pick up tips

Newdad19 · 14/11/2021 18:18

Who did you book with? We are hoping to go next year

SantaClausIsMyHero · 14/11/2021 18:42

Thanks everyone! Going to Saariselka with Lapland holidays! Can’t wait!

Ooh thanks @MrBeagles, I have one fussy eater and one who needs feeding every ten minutes so I’ll definitely take lots of snacks!

@eurochick I haven’t told mine so they dont ask when we’re going every five minutes! Hopefully it’ll be a good surprise!

@Newdad19 I’ve had a good experience with Santa’s Lapland, but they’re really difficult to catch on the phone and don’t answer emails for days. They had great deals and send out an amazing pack before you travel with loads of bits for the kids. They even send paper tor you to write to Santa, then you take the letter with you and the ‘elves’ give it to Santa before you see him, so the kids think he actually got the letter? Amazing! Ive heard bad things about Tui though, so definitely worth researching before you go!

We went with Thomas Cook and had an amazing time. Never known cold like it though!

I thought knitted gloves under ski gloves would be enough! Ha ha ha how wrong I was. Make sure you wear their wool lined leather mittens.

I've a deposit paid for next year with Sunway.ie. Anyone from Ireland been with them?

RAINSh0wers · 14/11/2021 23:08

We’re going in a couple of weeks for 2 nights with Canterbury travel. I feel really unprepared but I’ve just started sorting thermals etc. The kids don’t know, and I don’t know when to tell them. We’re only taking my eldest out of school for the day but I need to do the letter for that too.

I buried my head in the sand in case it was cancelled again and now I suddenly realise I need to get organised!

SantaClausIsMyHero · 15/11/2021 18:32

@RAINSh0wers there’s a couple of really useful Facebook advice pages which suggest what clothes etc you should take

choccielover36 · 15/11/2021 18:45

We go next Friday, still not letting myself quite believe it will happen, after it was cancelled last year! We are staying in Saariselka with santas lapland too! 3 nights with the hubby, and our 6 and 9 year olds! so so excited, they have no idea x

choccielover36 · 15/11/2021 18:46

@RAINSh0wers I know the feeling! I buried my head in the sand too! Then madly dashing about getting bits 😄😄

SantaClausIsMyHero · 15/11/2021 20:20

@choccielover36 please come back and let me know how it went (unless it was awful, then lie to me!) you must be so excited!

Ringonrighthand · 15/11/2021 20:23

Oohh this is exciting! I’m doing a day trip the week before Christmas and I’ve barely thought about it! Do I need to buy thermals?!

choccielover36 · 15/11/2021 20:26

@SantaClausIsMyHero I am very very excited, but also scared something is going to happen to prevent us going. I will definitely come back with an update, when we are back 😄

choccielover36 · 15/11/2021 20:26

@Ringonrighthand yep thermals are definitely needed.

Suzi888 · 15/11/2021 20:27

Place marking, not going this year, but want to book for next. Smile

We went here too! It was amazing and my daughter still says it was her best holiday ever 6 years later! Gosh I can't believe it was so long ago we went.

Everything was really well organised and even though I had to twist my husband's arm to go all he could say was 'I wish we had stayed for 3 nights instead of 2'!

The only downside was the flight out as it was really early with lots of very excited children (and adults) and one vomited behind us on the back of the seat on the plane so maybe take wet wipes just in case Grin

They provide all the warm outer layers and we didn't feel cold once. The letter to Santa is done so well too. They asked one parent to stay on the bus to give a 'safety talk' and explained how it would all work etc. If there were single parents the child/ren went off the coach with one of the staff.

There were some little tents to go in and get hot drinks and food during the day as well as the lunch and dinner back at the hotel.
Hope you have an amazing time!

@SantaClausIsMyHero, we're going in three weeks or so with Canterbury travels.

I think we've bought pretty much everything we need apart from thermal hats for the kids, planning a trip at the weekend to get them.

We're going to tell the kids the day before we go when they get home from school (Covid!!) and then we're going straight to a hotel at the airport for the night before flying the next day.

I'm starting to think it might actually happen...as long as none of us catch Covid between now and then!!

Ringonrighthand · 15/11/2021 21:05

I just checked out information and I think clothes are included?! Do we just get thermals to go underneath?!

Mallowmarshmallow · 15/11/2021 21:25

@Ringonrighthand , who are you travelling with?

We get snowsuits and boots included but need to buy everything else, so thermal base layers, mid layers, glove liners and ski gloves, socks etc....
