Anyone Want to do a Lapland Check in?

Travelling to Lapland in three weeks and counting. First time we’ve been. Anyone want to check in, where you’re going and/or when? What have you packed? Anything I need to know to take? I haven’t told my kids yet, what’s the best way to do it?

@Ringonrighthand it depends when you’re going and where? It’s -12 right now where we are going so thermal under layer, non cotton mid layer (cotton can get sweaty/wet, then freeze and cause hypothermia at that temperature) and then top layers. All for under the suits. Plus you don’t get the suit immediately, so snow boots etc for getting onto the bus. It’s worth bringing lots of hats and gloves and socks because they’ll get wet and be unpleasant at that temperature :)

We're going to Saariselka with santa's Lapland holidays too! Can’t wait! Going on 22nd December and flying back xmas eve

My tips. (We went in 2018)
1 bring face scarfs. The tube kind for skiing or even balaclavas. Because if its really cold like when we went then your chin gets painfully frozen. The temp can vary though.

  1. Wear several pairs of socks coz it's your feet that get cold first. And this will impact how long you stay out.
  2. I thought the food was great...but a lot of others didn't. Just be prepared if you're fussy. There was pasta bread and chips.
  3. If you're yet to book do 3 nights as 2 is so quick.
  4. They told us very small kids will struggle in cold and they were right. 4 and up better.
  5. Sareskelska (not how its spelt) is fantastic. Had a great toboggan run too. Longest in world. Its absolutely beautiful.
  6. Santa is ok.. but really not as great as huskies and reindeer... even my dc agreed and they were peak believers when we went.
  7. The Santa's Lapland 'elves' are a bit rubbish tbh... but lovely reps iyswim. Just the elf thing got a bit much. Be prepared to suspend your own judgements
  8. You spend a lot of time getting there...
10. My dd vomited on plane. Hope it wasn't on the OP!

Has been my best holiday ever and I've travelled a lot. I still plan to go back minus the Santa stuff. It goes really quick but also is so so different as to feel really long. Its quite magical.

The best holiday we have ever had. We took a soft toy husky with us and slipped it onto DD bed so she had a welcome present at the start of the trip. Ask the reception desk to call you (we got given a pager) if the Northern Lights are active.

Ringonrighthand · 16/11/2021 07:16

Thanks for the advice we go 16th December fly in the morning and there for 6 hours then fly home again! I can’t wait!

Mallowmarshmallow · 16/11/2021 08:22

I realised I'd got my email with information yesterday too and hadn't seen it come through. Our flight has also shifted back slightly later which is a bit annoying.

Now to get all the paperwork together!!

HeidiHaus · 16/11/2021 08:33

We went to Saariselka with Santa's Lapland too. Was magical and kids still talk about it years later. We had the most budget of the accommodations but still had a mini-sauna in the bathroom which was heaven!
The gloves and socks we were given were fantastic but you do need layers. I can honestly say we weren't cold although temp was only about -10 compared to the -25 that it had been the week before we went.

Our whole trip was very slick, no issues at all although I would agree the food was fairly basic.
It was magical, the huskies were our particular highlight.

Turtles4543 · 16/11/2021 19:34

We did Saariselka with Santa’s Lapland too! Fantastic memories. We took hand warmers to put in a pocket with our phones to keep the batteries going. Their clothing gear is amazingly effective. We got out base layers from Trespass.

I'm taking my 2 children on december 5th for the day with Canterbury travel. I've told kids. Ones worried about flying and the others excited. I'm just worried covid will stop us going.

Doughnuts68 · 16/11/2021 19:47

What’s the rough cost?

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 16/11/2021 20:42

I went with Tui and they were fantastic.
When we arrived, my friend sneakedIinto the hotel room first and left a smiggle advent calender on the bed to DD saying welcome to Lapland from the elves (was pre wrapped and typed up before we went) and she was amazed by it!
We enjoyed it all but wouldn't saying seeing Santa was the highlight, playing in the snow and doing the husky ride was the best bit!

MrsTumbletap · 17/11/2021 13:41

About £4000 for the 3 of us, 3 nights. Included the huskies and Santa and food. It was amazing and we would love to do it again.

Helpimfalling · 17/11/2021 14:03

I went as a child and have the best memories.

Especially husky and reindeer rides.

Although I didn't let it show at the time
(Miserable teen)

I would love to be able to take my
Children.

Have the loveliest time all.

MuddlingThrough1724 · 24/11/2021 20:46

Following this for tips and feedback! We are going to Roveniemi on NYD and am a) hoping it goes ahead and b) worried we'll be cold!

eurochick · 25/11/2021 07:38

What non-cotton clothes are people taking for mid-layers? I live in jeans normally.

RAINSh0wers · 27/11/2021 23:15

What are you all thinking after tonight’s announcement? We’re due to go next Friday Confused isolation will be a real pain on return as DD will miss more school (we’re only going for two nights so we’d planned it so she’d just miss one day). It all feels really stressful!

Shieldingending · 27/11/2021 23:44

Hope all of you that are going this year have an amazing time! We went to Saariselka with Santas lapland a few years ago and it was fantastic, one of my best holidays. So magical, I am absolutely convinced that I saw the real Father Christmas there Smile

Shieldingending · 27/11/2021 23:44

I should add there is not available in the way of snacks, so definitely pack plenty of those because the cold makes you hungry

choccielover36 · 29/11/2021 18:33

Hey all! Little update! We just got back today. Stayed in Saariselka. It was absolutely stunning. I will never forget it. My top tips are… put phone on low power mode to keep battery going. wear extra layers on your search for santa day. its colder there than at resort, and take a break to warm yourselves between each activity. Food was ok, but if you have fussy kids take a few snacks. Hand and Foot warmers were amazing. I dont recommend the Northern light adventure. Its too early to see them and the kids get so cold out there for 2 hours. Instead download the arora app and be prepared to stay up late and hop in a cab if you really want to see them. I saw them at about 11.30pm last night 😃 It really is a magical trip x

RAINSh0wers · 29/11/2021 18:45

Ah I’m so glad you had an amazing time! We go this weekend, I’m excited now after stressing about it over the weekend.

I still haven’t told the kids, I think I’ll wait till I wake them up the morning we go. Otherwise they’ll never sleep!

choccielover36 · 29/11/2021 19:03

Have an amazing time! Your kids are going to be sooo excited 😃

Pleasebe2022 · 03/12/2021 19:07

I'm going for the day trip with Canterbury travel sunday from Stansted. Anyone else?
