No idea what to get dd 8

Dd has written her list but it is all stuff she has seen on YouTube and either wildly expensive as shipping from the US or out of stock. Most of it is also some form of cuddly toy. She literally has hundreds, a lot are bagged up and in the loft.

As a result I have absolutely zero ideas of what to buy her for Christmas. Have queried with her dad if she has mentioned anything when with him but she hasn't.

So far she has
Tickets to Harry Potter studio
Board game
Harry potter hoodie
LOL doll thing

I know the studio tickets are expensive but they don't really amount to anything when wrapped.

Dp (we don't live together) has bought her a kids alexa that is a tiger and is planning to give her some money for going to Harry potter.

She is massively into art but we bought her tons of art stuff for her birthday in the summer. She plays a sport but has recently had all new kit as she needed it and had out grown everything.

What the hell do I buy her??!!

Roller blades/skateboard
Lego Friends set
Hair styling head
Some kind of craft kit - Djeco do a beautiful scarf paint kit that was a big hit with my DD. Or maybe a button again kit.
Fluffy blanket and cushion for her room
LED strip lights
Bath bombs my DD was bought this set and it is gorgeous
Slime

WhatsMyNameGonnaBeNow · 14/11/2021 09:27

What else is she into besides the YouTuber merch and HP?

A lot of girls that age love Lego friends?
Roller skates
Instax camera
Craft kits/Scrapbook kit
HP pyjamas/onesie

SleafordSods · 14/11/2021 09:27

Great suggestions from coffee. My DD absolutely loved her heelies at that age.

Terminallysleepdeprived · 14/11/2021 09:29

Thanks for the ideas unfortunately She has roller skates at her dad's and We have tons of lego from last year that she hasn't touched 😭

I like the scarf thing though will have a look thank you.

She can't use Bath bombs due to severe eczema.

So things she already has..
Switch lite
Bike
Skates
Scooter
Endless teddys
Lego galore that remains untouched
Make your own build a bear set
Swing set in garden
Trampoline
Own TV and dvd player Inc fire stick

Enough books to fill a library

That was meant to say Buttonbag kit…like these.

Parker231 · 14/11/2021 09:33

DD loved Lego and remote control cars at that age.

Not a lot really. She is at that annoying transition phase where she feels too big for toys but not really into anything.

She loves Disney descendants but they don't really do a lot of merchandise. She has all the movies on dvd

She is starting to get into music but no one specific to buy albums etc.

She has a normal digital camera but are the instax one the modern Polaroid instant print ones?

That sounds like more than. Enough OP! The HP tickets are expensive. !

We got a really good deal so they actually weren't that bad.

I would say don't fall into this trap!
If she's asked for a cuddly toy, could you get a HP themed one and tie the tickets in a pouch around the neck etc?

Ellmau · 14/11/2021 10:25

Honestly, I would give her one cuddly toy even though she has loads already as it seems to be the main thing she wants, obviously not one of the expensive ones.

It's not a trap, the tickets were a bargain and not massively expensive compared to when we went last time.

I think because I really want to see it in the snow i kinda feel a bit selfish as it is in a big part for me too so not really a present for her if that makes sense.

I have ordered a proper" ticket and gift box from etsy so it is a proper gift.

I just feel like at 8 and still believing she needs santa to still spot her and there is nothing to gift ad she doesn't really know what she wants.

Am going to spend a day round smyths today to see if i can get some inspiration.

From grandparents I think DD (8, but almost 9) will be getting a skateboard, and a national geographic fossils and gemstones set (they are doing fossils and geology at school, so very into this atm).

Things DD has liked recently / last year:

Gemex jewellery making kit
Electronics set
She’s also Harry Potter mad so any HP stuff!
Swingball set
Stationery set
Big tins of art pencils

For her last birthday, she also particularly liked a music box/jewellery box, which wasn’t the old style ballerina type, but a gorgeous one from Djeco who do really beautiful ones around £25.

jerometheturnipking · 14/11/2021 11:16

I think you're being a bit ridiculous. She's getting good presents that you've already put thought into. Sure, if you see something and think "ooh DD would love that" then get it, but there's no point in getting random tat for the sake of having things to open.

DS is 8 and getting: A kids Kindle (reading one, not tablet), Hogwarts Express lego, McLaren Senna Lego Technic, Mario Golf for the Switch, Beano book, Tintin book, a set of football Top Trumps. He'll get a stocking too which will have sweeties, a toothbrush, satsuma, and some packets of the Panini football cards.
DD is 6 and getting a pair of roller skates/pads, a HP Lego set (transfiguration moment I think), a kid's Kindle, a wee Lego Friends cat set, a cuddly Hedwig and she's recently said she wishes she'd asked for Crayola glitter dots so we'll probably get her those too.
Only DS asked for a Kindle, but they're both always after using mine so we figured to get DD one too.

Pumpkinstace · 14/11/2021 11:17

Mine is getting a 3d pen

Ahwig · 14/11/2021 11:19

I bought my grandson a metal detector, he loved it and it encouraged him to be out and about and gave him a break from screens

Stompythedinosaur · 14/11/2021 11:23

Tie dye kit and a bunch of white t-shirts went down well last year.

Last year my 8yo like some primark harry potter fairy lights, this year I have got her this potion light light for her bedroom.
www.amazon.co.uk/Harry-Potter-Potion-Bottles-Mood/dp/B085PS8RT9?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

My 10yo is getting a harry potter rug from Studio, which could work too.

I hear you OP.

Same issue here with eldest DD who doesn't really know what she wants.

It's all very well the posters saying she's got enough don't bother. But personally we've had a very very horrible few months and she's been so strong and add that to that we could be on our final believing in Santa year with her and it's making us really want to get her nice gifts.

Rainbow High is a big feature of her list. I actually have ordered some bits from the US as stock has run out over here and I want her to have her #1 item. Thankfully got it on offer so even with shipping and tax it's less than £10 more than it would have been to buy here.

But I now realise I've not thought about YouTubers. So off to check those.

Not sure who your DD likes but if it's Moriah then you can get merch of hers from UK stock. We have in the past. X

What about a new game for her switch lite?

Other suggestions:

  • hair accessories and other little bits and bobs from somewhere like Claire's wrapped individually in tissue paper and put in a pretty gift bag or box
  • retro tamagotchi
  • nice PJs
  • logic game like rush hour or something lol ke bop it
  • some stationary bits
  • character socks

Have suggested we look at switching games but have just been met with apathy at the suggestion. I strongly suspect the only reason she has any interest in it at all is because her big sister (dsd via ex) has one so she only really looks at games that she has ie animal crossing.

She has the pet game for her switch so I don't think she'd be interested in the tamagotchi things unfortunately but I might see what she thinks if we see them when we are out.

Was sooooo much easier when she just wanted the vtech cars!!
Hair accessories etc tend to end up as stocking fillers - she does love a trip to Claires. I have got her some clip on earrings from there for her stocking.

"a bit ridiculous" isn't rude. I stand by my point - your daughter is already getting good, well thought out, presents. Find me a child who hasn't had a rough time in the past 2 years.

StolenAwayOn55thand3rd · 14/11/2021 17:14

I'm another one who thinks she is getting plenty, sorry!

My DD8 has asked for one toy which would've been about £120 new but I got second hand, so £20. I've also bought her two books, a sweatshirt and a thing to mount on the wall to display her sports medals. And I think that's plenty! She will also get some smaller items in her stocking. I've never bought the DC more than a few gifts at Christmas and they're always over the moon with what they get.

Terminallysleepdeprived · 14/11/2021 17:22

Whether you think she is getting enough is irrelevant. I don't feel a board game, a hoodie and a ticket to an event is sufficient and have asked for ideas.

OP posts:
HerbivorousRex · 14/11/2021 18:03

You could make her a Harry Potter themed movie hamper- the films are usually on over Christmas or you could include a DVD (M&S has loads of Harry Potter sweets, you could get a fleecy ‘invisibility’ blanket, Harry Potter mug and sparkly hot chocolate bomb, popcorn, and maybe a small cuddly toy).

If she likes reading then she might enjoy a set of books (I can recommend the ‘adventurers’ series by Jemma Hatt). I had loads as a kid and was always happy to receive more!

Would she enjoy one of the craft projects sets (candle making, soap making, chocolate making etc), they’re usually a bit expensive for what they are but if you get the right ones they can be really fun and creative (just check the reviews carefully to make sure they’re not tat!)

If she’s starting to get into jewellery/hair accessories etc then maybe a nice case that she can put them all in www.amazon.co.uk/Joligrace-Cosmetic-Organiser-Lockable-Holographic/dp/B07VDJF3YX/ref=mp_s_a_1_25?crid=3OYYHSO4WPPNK&keywords=light+up+makeup+box&sprefix=light+up+make%2Caps%2C243&refresh=1&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1636912948&sr=8-25 maybe with a gift voucher inside for somewhere like Claire’s accessories.
