No idea what to get dd 8

Dd has written her list but it is all stuff she has seen on YouTube and either wildly expensive as shipping from the US or out of stock. Most of it is also some form of cuddly toy. She literally has hundreds, a lot are bagged up and in the loft.

As a result I have absolutely zero ideas of what to buy her for Christmas. Have queried with her dad if she has mentioned anything when with him but she hasn't.

So far she has
Tickets to Harry Potter studio
Board game
Harry potter hoodie
LOL doll thing

I know the studio tickets are expensive but they don't really amount to anything when wrapped.

Dp (we don't live together) has bought her a kids alexa that is a tiger and is planning to give her some money for going to Harry potter.

She is massively into art but we bought her tons of art stuff for her birthday in the summer. She plays a sport but has recently had all new kit as she needed it and had out grown everything.

What the hell do I buy her??!!

Harry Potter wand, that list actually seems fine to me but we spend more on special food and drink than presents.

Terminallysleepdeprived · 14/11/2021 18:41

@herbivorousrex thanks for the ideas. Unfortunately as much as she would love the candle/soap making etc she has a hyperactive immune system and having checked them all out in Smyths today they all contained stuff she is hyper sensitive too or allergic so they are a no go 😭

She has all the movies and books for HP but I love the idea of doing her a themed hamper and i could hide the tickets inside...you are a gem thank you!!!

@goose1964 she has a wand that she bought herself. I don't drink and dd is massively fussy over food...she doesn't get a lot during the year so I try to make the most of birthday and Christmas.

Apologies of it seems like drip feeding but my uncle is dying and my friend (mum of dd's friends) has just had a severe cancer diagnosis which has already spread although dd doesn't know this. So I guess I am feeling like I need to make a big fuss..you just never know what is round the corner.

My DDs love Harry Potter too. I’ve got my 7yo a little bit more than my 9yo as 9yo getting a switch. What I’ve got 7yo dd

Invisibility cloak
HP gift set from Boots. Some bits are too old for her e,g scented candle so I’ve taken some bits out which I will keep and replace with other HP stuff I’ve bought, mainly from primark, griffindore compact, head band, snitch lip balm etc…
I’ve got a HP storage box
2 HP notebook and pens sets
A pack of hp notebooks I will split as stocking fillers (my DDs love notebooks and are constantly wringing things down)
House pens
Quill writing set
HP painting sheets
Build your own dobby out of wood
Talking Dobby though I think I may keep him myself
Signed Emma Watson photo

The majority of the HP stuff I’ve bought from Aldi & primark

Have a look in places like homebargins for descendants stuff, it’s been a while but sometimes old bits like the dolls will suddenly appear. I’ve also bought my DDs descendants leather jackets off FB marketplace.

What about wireless headphones to listen to music. My 9yo is getting a nice rose gold set of her DGPs for Xmas she picked out. She wants AirPods but not a chance as she will loose them.

Smart watch?

ihearttc · 14/11/2021 19:23

Does she have a tablet? We got DS2 the Harry Potter Coding Wand a couple of years ago…he loved it and it really had the wow factor.

What about a Build a Bear Harry Potter bear in a box?

AlwaysColdHands · 14/11/2021 19:27

My 7.5 year old is getting a knitting/ crochet set, camera, books, Lego dots set….. not sure what else yet.

Terminallysleepdeprived · 14/11/2021 19:28

Thanks @AliceMcK boots is the one place I haven't been in. I guess I just associate it with lots of stiff she can't go near, make up, smelliest, lip balm etc. She adores Claires and desperately wants to have the lip balms etc that her friends have but I can't let her. They all have the home bargains/Claires hand sanitiser buddy things. I have had to buy some and empty out the hand sanitiser, clean them out, dry them and then fill with her anti viral cream instead so that she doesn't have to feel left out.

Dp and I have plans to hit the various Christmas markets so hoping to find bits and pieces there. We live within an hour or so of York, Manchester, Lincoln and he has seen the new one at Alton Towers advertised so we might see what we find.

I have had a chat with her dad tonight and he is also clueless as to what to get her.

If I'm stuck I give a voucher or some spending money. This could work for HP World perhaps? My kids love choosing stuff themselves.

Terminallysleepdeprived · 14/11/2021 19:35

@mewkins this will be my last resort! Dp is going to put some money on her gohenry card for HP World although she struggled to find anything she was happy to spend money on last time (she is far more frugal than me unless cuddly toys are involved)

As for the build a bear suggestion...she is on a ban!!! We have sooooooo bloody many of them 🤣🤣 she saw the HP ones the other week and then decided she had enough teddies at home so just bought outfit to go on an existing one.

I’m with you OP, it’s not many gifts to open. Christmas is a special time. You’ve had loads of good suggestions above but you could add nail art kit and nail polishes, any of the Galt craft kits, foil art etc

Terminallysleepdeprived · 14/11/2021 19:40

In other news next year is sorted as I managed to bag bargain tickets to the lion king musical in Manchesternext November 🎉

One of my DDs has very sensitive skin, another bad eczema & I also react badly to a lot of stuff so don’t tend to think of these places either, I just happened to go in one day looking for something and came across the set, they had other gifts too. Luckily my 7yo has inherited rhino skin from somewhere and can get away with most things.

When ever we’ve had things like bath bombs we would do them in clear tubs but not let the DDs put hands in.

oodies are also a popular choice this year, I’ve got all mine fake ones of Amazon,

user1493494961 · 14/11/2021 19:49

Pyjamas, onesie, jigsaw, board game, duvet cover, blanket, other bits for bedroom.

Terminallysleepdeprived · 14/11/2021 19:50

@alicemck dd is on methotrexate to try and help her skin, nearly 3 years in and it has been a game changer. She found an oodie style thing in primark last weekend..you have just reminded me. Will pop and get it next weekend whilst she is at her dad's.

He has got her tickets for the LOL live tour next weekend for Christmas so he is planning to just do lots of small gifts.

I think the thing that is really bugging me is that as a kid Santa never got me the thing I really wanted, in part because it was expensive and whilst we weren't poor there wasn't money to lavish on big gifts but also because my mum decided they were crap and wouldn't spend money on things...Mr Frosty I am looking at you. So I always try to get one or 2 of the things she really wants. However having spoken to her dad tonight the list he sent me isn't her Christmas wants it is just stuff she has seen advertised and liked the look of so am quite glad I haven't ordered any of it yet!

Sorry @user1493494961 but unless but was a super expensive character one I don't think a duvet cover makes for a great Christmas gift for us.

I can’t see anywhere that OP has asked for opinions on whether she has bought enough so why are people giving them? She’s asked for ideas for gifts. Everyone does Christmas differently. One person’s ‘enough’ is another person’s ‘plenty’ is another person’s’needs another gift or two’. Op is asking for gift ideas. Keep uninvited opinions on whether it is needed to yourself.

Gliderx · 14/11/2021 19:57

Fluffy slipper boots

The floor is lava game
New bell for her bike (if she has one)

@Terminallysleepdeprived. I've bought this one for a relative's child for Christmas:
www.vonhaus.com/vh_en/mini-waffle-maker-700w

We love our waffle maker here. We have the Russell Hobbs one (not a mini one, but makes waffles/toasties/paninis) and, although it's not the easiest to clean, you can buy additional plates for it (doughnut, churrus, cake pop) so you can make lots of stuff with one gadget. 4 yo loves it and we often get it out at weekends to make a special breakfast.

I’m part of the I never got a Mr Frosty support group too 😆 I’m very much like you, I never got anything I wanted so make sure I do my best to get my DDs as much as I can on their lists.

That’s good news about the methotrexate. I was on it last year, it put me in bed for 4 months I couldn’t cope with it. I do know people it’s worked for, I’m so happy it’s helping your dd.

Gliderx · 14/11/2021 20:27

Depending on your budget, Lakeland have a nice hot chocolate kit (have earmarked as a present for a sweet-toothed friend Grin). It's a bit pricey for what it is but comes with a nice range of hot chocolates and toppings and looks quite "grown-up", which your DD might like.

ThePoisonousMushroom · 14/11/2021 20:30

Interesting thread as I have a hard to buy for 8 year old. She doesn’t want anything! She loves the Harry Potter books but isn’t interested in watching the films or any merchandise. She doesn’t like toys and owns every board game known to man so that limits us somewhat Grin. She doesn’t have a Switch or laptop or TV in her room but she isn’t interested in any of those. She has recently had her birthday too so I used up any ideas on that.
Anyway, so far mine is getting a sewing machine and bits to go with that (nice sewing box etc), an Alexa, a 3D globe jigsaw and a Tamagotchi. All out of ideas after that!

Ineedapuppy · 14/11/2021 20:33

Rather than a soft toy, you could try novelty cushion for her bed? < www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Funny-Donuts-Pillow-Case-Doughnut-Ornament-Cushion-Home-Car-Sofa-Bedroom-Decors-/403103886483?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49286&mkrid=710-127635-2958-0>

Agree with PP who suggested tie die kit, modelling clay or Slime Kits - Amazon sometimes have them on Black
Friday.

If you’re looking for cheapish volume gifts then I’d suggest Primark and B&M.

ThePoisonousMushroom · 14/11/2021 20:38

Oh and an Oodie!

Blankiefan · 14/11/2021 20:39

We bought our 8yo a projector and screen (it's a big white sheet you can hook up on walls, etc). I think about £50 for the projector and £10 for the screen. It was a big hit. We've only used it inside so far but it'll be great outside too.

You could make it into a movie might hamper. Pad it out with a big bag of popcorn, sweets and a blanket.
