Earlier this year our garage flooded and my Christmas tree wasn’t overly salvageable.

I’m looking at getting a balsam hill one?

Are they worth the money??

I’m hoping I’ve attached the pic of the one I’m looking at.

Any help much appreciated

My mum ordered one and sent it straight back for a refund, she said it was really sparce like bits were missing and wasn't worth the money at all.

ChristmasTreeBee · 13/11/2021 17:00

@WhatsitWiggle oh no that doesn’t sound good

We got ours 4 years ago and it is absolutely beautiful. It's not the same one as you've posted but I don't think that matters. Ours is pre-lit with warm lights and it's brilliant to have just one plug! It takes a lot of fluffing (especially more do the first few years) to get it to look just right but it's worth it. And you even get gloves to make the fluffing a bit easier! Personally I'd definitely recommend them.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 13/11/2021 17:07

This was ours last year, can't wait to put up the decorations this year!

I deliberated for ages but the bad reviews about the sparse branches & all the fluffing put me off.
I got this from Costco in the end & it’s amazing. Was £259 when I bought it & I think it’s £299 in store now but more online due to delivery.

ChristmasTreeBee · 13/11/2021 17:09

@LifeInAHamsterWheel which one do you have? If you don’t mind me asking?

I’ve also spotted this one

I love mine. I got a 7ft non lit one and I want a second but will go for the 8ft!
I hadn’t realised how rubbish my £50 Tesco one was before I got my balsam hill one. I’ll find pictures.

We have the Silverado Slim and I'm really happy with it. There is a technique to fluffing the branches out fully. Various BH videos on You Tube.

The branches were high quality and realistic. I will look to replace our larger tree in the front room when we've got a few more years out of it.

AnnoyedByAlfieBear · 13/11/2021 17:15

I've just had one delivered and I love it! It's so realistic and yes it needs fluffing once it's done it won't be such a big job every year.

LittlePearl · 13/11/2021 17:17

We've been very pleased with ours. Expensive, but on balance I think it's been worth it.

YouHaveNoAuthorityHereJackie · 13/11/2021 17:19

They’re fantastic. We were so dubious about spending so much money but now we have 2. I think ours are Noble Firs, both prelit which is a godsend when we get them out every year and don’t have to wait while someone untangles the lights.

TrickyD · 13/11/2021 17:20

Have a look at the Facebook page called "Balsam Hill Complaints, before you splash out.
Fine until something goes wrong, the pre-lit lights seem to be the worst offenders, then dreadful customer service. To be fair, most complaints are from the US,
We have a fabulous tree from Christmas Tree World, very quick delivery and very helpful if you want to talk to them about which tree to choose.
Far cheaper than BH.

jerometheturnipking · 13/11/2021 17:20

It seems to be a really mixed bag. Some people swear by them and others seem to have experiences like WhatsitWiggle's mum.

Rosesarere · 13/11/2021 17:22

I went back and forth for a long time but the reviews put me off, I ordered one from Christmas tree World and its beautiful! So full but looks really realistic. Takes mininak fluffing too

Ghoulette · 13/11/2021 17:23

Mine arrived this week and I put it up today to check the quality, as I had seen some bad reviews too as I would have time to have it exchanged before December if it was shite.

It took me about the same time to set up as my old, shite one so about half an hour. Didn't need to spend hours afterwards, "fluffing" and fannying about, bar two spots where I hadn't actually unfurled the branches!

I would 100% recommend it. It's the best Christmas tree I have bought. I'll post a picture of it shortly Smile

My mil has one. I want one!

Floralnomad · 13/11/2021 17:28

We have a 7’ pre lit Fraser fir and a smaller cathedral pre lit , they are both beautiful . The point is you do have to spend a good while fluffing particularly in the first year . I’ve not seen a comparable tree in a shop or garden centre , particularly for the price if you buy in a sale .( which everyone does ) .

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 13/11/2021 17:30

Love ours and wish we had gone for a bigger prelit one! Expensive but worth it!

Roussette · 13/11/2021 17:31

I disagree. We had one delivered, it's big, not sure how much it was but a lot!
The lights flickered on and off on one part of it (it's in 3 parts, think it was the middle or the bottom)
I rang them up and said what do you want me to do... just send back the flickering part, the whole lot or what.

They sent me a complete new tree and said keep the other one! So we now have two massive trees!

ForensicFlossy · 13/11/2021 17:32

We have some at work. Imo not worth the money, I was gobsmacked when I found out how much they cost.

bettytaghetti · 13/11/2021 17:35

I was very anti artificial trees but for reasons I won't bother going into here, decided to give it a go. I ordered the sample pack of branches in order to see which type I preferred, and ended up choosing the Vermont spruce.
I do find that they are very dense and require a lot of decorations to make it really stand out (well that's my excuse for buying so many Xmas decs! 😜)
Several people have been fooled by the tree and thought it was real 😂
I'm attaching 2 photos; one without decs that I took to show a friend what it looks like naked, and the other fully loaded (although I'm sure I could manage to find some space for some more 🤣).
I recommend a tree skirt to hide the bare stand as that really does give the game away!

More people complain about stuff than rave about stuff. I love my BH tree at no stage have I reviewed it and said how wonderful it is. I have the same one as Ghoulette I think; mine is the blue spruce, unlit.

I think when people say it is sparse it is user error, the tree can and should look exactly like the photos on the BH website. There is a video I will link that shows you the difference between what some people believe is fluffed and what actual fluffing looks like.

If memory serves mine has 2 types of branch ends, one that forks and one that splits into 3, the video shows the 3 one. You fluff up and sideways. The branches touch sideways and fill in the gaps with the up fluff. It is so simple my children help do it. The first year you fluff is not the hardest but it has been packed very tightly. The storage bag is plenty big enough to get everything back in and very good quality.

The one thing we do is we only let down one row of branches at a time to fluff and light as we go, then let the next row down rather than a whole section. We absolutely love our tree. I was always happy with my previous one until I got the BH one, it is on a whole other level.

maofteens · 13/11/2021 18:47

I had one for three years. It looked very realistic. I regret getting a prelit one though, which was one of the main reasons for selling it. The lights are VERY bright and felt when on I couldn't see my decorations. Also it is the size of a very fat human in its bag so you need space to store it.
I'm back to real now - we cut our own down which is a nice family tradition.
