Board Game to bring the family together

BaconAndAvocado · 31/10/2021 19:28

DCs are 13 and 15 and really don't like being in each other's company these days!

I'm hoping that I can find a game they they'll be so interested in that the bickering will cease.
(Yes I know it's a long shot but miracles do happen).

Anyone got a recommendation for a good board game for 5+ people that's good for teens?

MNHQ Update
This thread is a little out of date now, but if you've landed here while on the lookout for good family board games, our guide to the best family board games has been recently updated to reflect current availability. It includes a wide range of fun options suitable for kids (and adults!) of all ages. We hope it's helpful! Flowers

I wouldn't do forbidden island, it gets boring quickly. (But borrow it if you can.)

Pandemic is good, we also like Catan, Carcassone, Agricola.

Some smaller format games are good as easy to set up and faster to play, things like Fluxx (get their interests, there are loads of variations) or Port Royal.

Our new favourite is Seven Bridges, very soothing, and only semi-competitive.

Oh, and we have done a lot of escape room-type games e.g. Exit and Deckscape.

Roselilly36 · 01/11/2021 19:41

We like Payday, or Yahtzee that’s not a board game I know!

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 01/11/2021 19:44

Not a board game but we love Impact.

ChateauMargaux · 01/11/2021 19:45

Reading with interest... lots of ones that have resulted in tears, strops and grumps on here though..

Shot in the dark is lots of fun.. not a board game but great for playing around the table during meals..

Oh yes I love Yahtzee too! And also Boggle.
MintyIguana · 01/11/2021 19:54

Codenames is great.

PoppyMonth · 01/11/2021 19:57

Articulate is our favourite game ever.

We also love Dobble and Linkee.

I quite fancy Pictionary Air.

Personally I think Europe is the best for starters.
VitalsStable · 01/11/2021 20:17

Where in the world?
Ticket to ride
Who knows where?

SickAndTiredAgain · 01/11/2021 20:18

Not a board game but Beat That is fun, it’s active with silly tasks. It comes with dice, balls, cups, little counters and a tape measure and it’s things like, “can you throw a ball up above your head and catch it while balancing a counter on your forehead” and you bet on whether you think you can do it, win your counters if you do, lose them if you don’t.
Not for everyone but it’s silly fun.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 01/11/2021 20:21

Pandemic.

You all work together to beat the board.

parrotonmyshoulder · 01/11/2021 20:26

Hogwarts Battle, mentioned above, really is an excellent game. So much playability and gets more challenging the more you play it.

Roll Player

Five Tribes

Carcassonne (Amazon is a good version)

PigeonPigPie · 01/11/2021 20:28

Ticket to Ride is fab! Also recommend Linkee, London Underground game, Topix, Game of Life x

PBfingers · 01/11/2021 20:30

Outsmarted is great. It's like a tv quiz with different genres like film and music, back to school, current news. It has a remote play mode so you can play with other friends or family not in your house at the time. You can also set the difficulty level which is great if you have a wide mix of ages so questions are tailored.

Thanks Rruth

Be careful OP, quite a lot of these suggestions are four player games - Pandemic, Forbidden Island, Catan and Agricola just off the top of my head.

I’m going to suggest Forgotten Waters and Space Base.

If you are happy with card games then maybe Exploding Kittens or Fluxx

tabulahrasa · 01/11/2021 20:38

Not a board game… but taskmaster is honestly the best game ever.

Catan and Agricola have expansions for 5-6 players, and Pandemic On The Brink allows five I think?

@rrhuth

Yes, but it won’t be much fun if OP buys the base game and discovers on Christmas Day that it’s a four player game. And she may not want to buy a game and expansion without playing it to see if they enjoy it.

Personally I love Pandemic and have think I have every version and expansion including The Cure and Contagion but I know it’s not for everyone and wouldn’t suggest that somebody dives into buying expansions without knowing if they enjoy it

rrhuth · 01/11/2021 21:15

I think the way Pandemic works you can just have two people as a pair anyway, and use the standard game.

But ultimately, if you've five people, you have to take the plunge on the expansions.

Caramellatteplease · 01/11/2021 21:19

I'm glad someone else pointed out the numbers!! I was looking at them thinking most max out at 4 or 5

How "+" is the "+" in 5+?
For 5:
lords of Waterdeep (best game ever easy to learn but strategic enough you'll still be getting it out years later) there are expansions that take it to 6+.
Carcassone

For variable numbers of 5+
Secret Hitler
Chicken Heist
Big box sushi go (although I have done small box sushi with 6 but you have to reuse cards)
Village Pillage or Seven wonders (7 wonders is easier to get hold off but village pillage is easier to learn)
