Board Game to bring the family together

DCs are 13 and 15 and really don't like being in each other's company these days!

I'm hoping that I can find a game they they'll be so interested in that the bickering will cease.
(Yes I know it's a long shot but miracles do happen).

Anyone got a recommendation for a good board game for 5+ people that's good for teens?

MNHQ Update
This thread is a little out of date now, but if you've landed here while on the lookout for good family board games, our guide to the best family board games has been recently updated to reflect current availability. It includes a wide range of fun options suitable for kids (and adults!) of all ages. We hope it's helpful! Flowers

Articulate is great fun. We also play Bananagram, Pictionary, Cluedo, Mensch Ärgere Dich Nicht, Game of Life, Trivial Pursuit and Rummikub and other card games.

Brackenandbramble · 01/11/2021 21:22

Articulate and Carcassone are big hits in our house. I've never heard of Ticket to Ride, I'm off to Google it!

bravotango · 01/11/2021 21:24

They're old enough for a bluffing type game - we like Avalon and Coup.

MeanMrMustardSeed · 01/11/2021 21:28

Scotland Yard. You need 5 to make it a decent game (works fine with 4 with a ‘bobby’ too) and it’s part cooperative with one person being the one who’s trying to get away.

MeanMrMustardSeed · 01/11/2021 21:29

Selfish is an awesome game, and 5 players, but might now promote family harmony (clue is in the name! Grin)

MeanMrMustardSeed · 01/11/2021 21:30

*not.

Might NOT promote family harmony!

I think it would depend on whether one child winning would upset the other child.

We like co-op games where you are all winner or all losers, Forbidden Island is a great starter game for that, Magic Maze requires no talking but can result in some deadly eye stares and frustrated taps on the table, and Flashpoint.

For any game look up the rules on YouTube, far easier to see how it is played.

If there is no fighting over winning, Exploding Kittens, Settlers of Catan, Banagrams, we play in teams of 2, one adult with one child, Game of Life.

Not so much a board game but a game the whole family can play and learn together, is called magic the gathering, in Amazon they do a party night set with five decks in, with instructions that everyone can learn from.
Gooseysgirl · 01/11/2021 21:49

Bank Attack is hilarious - perfect for four

ThiagoSilvasToe · 01/11/2021 21:53

Coup is great. My children are similar ages and it was a big hit last Christmas.

SinoohXaenaHide · 01/11/2021 21:56

For cooperative games, yes to Pandemic as pp have said. Also "The Captain is Dead" and "Spirit Island".

For a competitive game that is genuinely fun to play even if you aren't winning, so that the losing teens don't hate the winner for winning, go for Terraforming Mars.

crummyusername · 01/11/2021 22:05

As a 2 player game, the classic Othello is quick to play and good fun. I second Rummikub. Labyrinth is unusual and fun, and 2-4 players. Exploding kittens is a favourite here too. Just bought Neanderthal Poetry as a gift which looks like it could be a fun Christmas time game, not too serious. Mine like Game of Life but I find it utterly tedious!

QueenCarrot · 01/11/2021 22:23

@rrhuth

I think the way Pandemic works you can just have two people as a pair anyway, and use the standard game.

But ultimately, if you've five people, you have to take the plunge on the expansions.

Yes, you can do that with any co-op game if you wish, but it’s not the same being half a player. Anyway, it’s up to the OP, but I thought she should be aware that she was being recommended four player games when she asked for suggestions for 5+ players

There are lots of fun five player games both co-operative and competitive and I would personally go with one of those

BaconAndAvocado · 02/11/2021 08:46

Sorry the numbers.
We'll be a family of 5 at Christmas.
Me, DH, DS1 aged 24, DS2 aged 15 and DD aged 13.

So yes, I'm really after a game for 4 or 5. There's bound to be one of the teens that will sometimes cry off!

In that case:
Lords of Waterdeep
King of Tokyo
Sushi go
Carcassone

AnneShirleysNewDress · 02/11/2021 12:32

Taskmaster is great. My DSD loves it. She's 15.

kavalkada · 03/11/2021 06:34

Ticket to Ride (USA or Europe), people often think it's boring, but once they play the first one, they're hooked

Camel Up (very fast, very funny)

Just One (amazing word game)

Dix It

RAFHercules · 03/11/2021 07:53

Risk.

barms90 · 03/11/2021 10:06

Dixit is good for this age and number of people.

BaconAndAvocado · 03/11/2021 12:43

We have and enjoy Dixit 🙂
