Is anyone starting their Christmas food shopping?

I don't think I can face doing a traditional big shop in the week before Christmas any more.

I have decided that we always buy too much and the food seems to hang around forever. So bring organised I have started a list and I'm going to buy one or two things a week instead. I have bought a frozen Turkey crown. Pigs in blankets and prawns. I think really if I didnt buy anything else I have Christmas dinner sorted ( kind of!).

If i get the other important things as I see them then leave the money essentials until the last few weeks. Hopefully my teens dont decide to cook a prawn stir fry, what could go wrong? I'm hoping to spend a lot less two this way as I will be more focused. I hope

I bought our favourite quite expensive biscuits last week because they were on offer!!

Incywinceyspider · 17/10/2021 17:56

I have some pigs in blankets in the freezer and a jar of mincemeat and a Christmas pudding leftover from last Christmas. I'll order the turkey on 1st Nov when the butcher opens their order book.

SquigglePigs · 17/10/2021 18:07

We're hosting twice over Christmas this year so we've bought the meat for each one so I know that's sorted. Will likely pick bits and bobs up in over the next month or so but I'm only just starting to think about it to be honest.

JollyHostess · 17/10/2021 18:17

I have a leg of lamb for our Christmas dinner lurking in the freezer after being let down by Ocado last year. Not risking having that happen again 😂

MintJulia · 17/10/2021 18:20

Some basics, dried fruit, vacuum packed chestnuts, chocolates, a bottle of liqueur, bottled olives and nuts. UHT milk

pinkksugarmouse · 17/10/2021 18:32

No. It’s only DH and me now DD (19) lives with her Dad.

We both have a box of hotel chocolat (a sleekster box lasted me a month last time).
DD (19) will spend some time before with us so I will get a few of her favourites.

We need to book our pre-Christmas meals soon. We go for one together and then DH goes for one with his grown up daughter. My DD is not a fan of going out due to her Aspergers.

I think people overbuy already without adding an extra layer of panic. It will probably lead to even more food waste or even more obesity (probably both).

As long as I have teabags I will manage happily on eating mostly how we do the rest of the year. I don’t get the annual binge-fest. But I appreciate that for many it is a tradition. It was when I was a child in my family but it’s not something I have carried on.

MeatyRvita · 17/10/2021 18:33

Yeah we buy bits spread through the months every year as it’s easier to budget.
We’ve got a leg of lamb, (we prefer lamb as our meat of choice) sausage meat (to make stuffing) and a small gammon joint for Boxing Day all in the freezer already.
Just need to get pigs in blankets for the freezer really.
I won’t pick up many snacks (apart from a few I hide away) as DH will demolish anything if he sees it. I’ve got a box of crackers for cheese, a bottle of Buck’s Fizz, and some twiglets.
Apart from some fresh veg nearer the time and a bit of cheese and a few nice snacks we’re sorted!

DrunkenKoala · 17/10/2021 18:43

I’ve got all the dry ingredients and alcohol for Christmas cake. Planning on making it late Oct and will buy marzipan and icing at beg Nov. Also bought a jar of mincemeat for mince pies.
Turkey, ham and Yule log on order from M&S. I normally get the pigs in blankets and stuffing mid Dec but will probably get them beg Nov.
Normally start getting chocolates, biscuits, crackers and crisps at beg Nov.
Not sure what we’re doing about wine and champagne yet, DP has a subscription with a wine company so I think he’s ordering from there. I drink Baileys throughout the year so there is always one in and although I’ve got 0.75 of a bottle I think I’ll get another one in now rather than closer to Christmas.

ufucoffee · 17/10/2021 19:05

No. I'll do it just before Christmas Day.

DiamondBright · 17/10/2021 19:07

I've only got a couple of panettone and some baking ingredients so far.

I've got a small Ocado order coming this week that's basically all Christmas stuff some pigs in blankets, a few frozen "party food" bits, and some stocking fillers. Oh, and a free box on chocolates and a £4.50 off voucher which is nice but won't lure me back, this is my last order.

I'd like a Turkey crown and a gammon joint in the freezer soon, so either in my Ocado order if they come in stock or I'll make time while I'm on leave for half term for a trip into town to the butchers.

Frazzledd · 17/10/2021 19:10

I've got the m&s catalogue and circled the triple choc yule log- does that count!?

TheLastLonelyBakedBeanInTheTin · 17/10/2021 19:16

This month we are eating the freezer contents so I have space for the Christmas bits. Last year I regretted not getting things like frozen desserts, finger foods and starters ahead of time. I will probably buy mince meat and frozen pastry when I see it to for hassle free mince pies. I can't buy the pre made kind because the box never makes it home even. Love a mince pie. Likewise won't but any sweet treats, savoury snacks, special cheeses, charcuterie or pate in until it's nearly Christmas because I want it to be a few days of indulgence not the many weeks of indulgence it might turn into otherwise.

TheLastLonelyBakedBeanInTheTin · 17/10/2021 19:16

I am buying stocking fillers when I see them though!

DrWankincense · 17/10/2021 19:23

I have turkey and mince pies in the freezer.
This week is half term but after that I'll be on it.
Baileys and After Eights and star- shaped pretzels are top of the list!

DockOTheBay · 17/10/2021 19:25

I bought the Christmas pudding in January (75% off!) And I bought some pigs in blankets the other day to freeze but I doubt they'll make it to Christmas.

NoWordForFluffy · 17/10/2021 19:26

Yes, I've bought a load of snacks / crackers already, as well as having made two batches of mince pies. I also have lamb, pork, beef and chicken in the freezer ready to choose which to have for dinner.

I'm going to look at ordering party food for the freezer soon as well.

I've ordered cheese and a few other bits to collect from Booths on Christmas Eve. I'll be getting salads from Sainsbury's nearer the time.

Oh, I've also made some sausage rolls and we have some chicken goujons and cocktail sausages lurking in the cupboard.

I'm not doing too bad really! Xmas Grin

NoWordForFluffy · 17/10/2021 19:27

Oh yes, we have pigs in blankets and our wine too. Just the clementine and cranberry Buck's Fizz to get from M&S now.

DarlingCoffee · 17/10/2021 19:29

We’ve also ordered from Cook this year. Just need to organise a wine delivery now and we are sorted.

DiamondBright · 17/10/2021 19:32

I forgot I have mincemeat, cranberry sauce and chicken stock (for the gravy) in the pantry.

I'm planning to make frangipani mince pies, so I have ground almonds in my Ocado order, its been like finding hens teeth recently.

mummymayhem18 · 17/10/2021 19:41

@Hairwizard Tesco have Baileys on offer at the moment for £12 Clubcard price for the litre bottle. Up until the 25th. I looked online as I have groceries delivered but it's usually the same offers instore.

Springplanting · 17/10/2021 19:45

Flour and unsalted butter and jar of mincemeat for mince pies bought
Christmas beef joint bought and in freezer now
crackers and napkins and table decorations were in last year's sale

fresh veg, Christmas fancy fruit, some chocolate will be bought 19th

no booze here anyway so pretty stress free.

MenaiMna · 17/10/2021 19:49

Booked my m&s pick up for 24.12 on Thursday. Waitrose is totally booked for Xmas week. Their Xmas treats coming in two weeks for the store cupboard. My Sainsbury's doesn't do "Xmas" deliveries you've to sit on the site fighting your way to a standard slot two weeks before as normal! Going to order at the butcher next couple of weeks. I'm not capable of walking great distances so really rely on the deliveries!

PurBal · 17/10/2021 19:50

Meat wise we have the ham and the fillet steak. Need to pick up venison for a Christmas Eve stew, turkey breast (we are having fillet steak as our main meal and turkey tacos for lunch) and sausage meat for sausage rolls. Need to ask DH if he wants pigs in blankets.

Unsure if we are having stuffing, sage in the garden, bit weird with beef though. I normally make orange and cranberry sauce but not sure if I will because of having tacos.

Made the chutney to go with the ham. Will make braised red cabbage in advance. Leeks in the veg patch. Bought mince meat but not made mince pies yet. Haven’t decided on pud, I like a Christmas pudding but I am the only one. DH says something chocolate.

We have cook from frozen pastries and I want to get smoked salmon to freeze but DH doesn’t like it once it’s defrosted Hmm

We have the champagne and scotch!

mummymayhem18 · 17/10/2021 19:52

I've bought some bottles of wine. Some peanuts, cashews and some crisps. This is my first Christmas divorced and my daughter will be with her dad on Christmas Day so I will be going to my mums for Christmas dinner. I will host for her on Boxing Day and my daughter will be back as well so will be doing a buffet. So far for the buffet I've just bought a Pepperoni Pizza Express Pizza and some Duck spring rolls. Will be buying Tempura prawns ,chicken bits, some of M&S deli snacks etc nearer the time. My mum normally makes a quiche which is 😋.
I did order some Quality Street direct so I could pick a tin with all my favourites. Also bought a tin for my mum. I must try not to open them before Christmas 🤣. Oh that reminds me also bought After Eights,Salted Caramel Lindt and Orange Maltesers truffles. So plenty of naughty sweets.

mum2jakie · 17/10/2021 19:58
