Is anyone starting their Christmas food shopping?

I don't think I can face doing a traditional big shop in the week before Christmas any more.

I have decided that we always buy too much and the food seems to hang around forever. So bring organised I have started a list and I'm going to buy one or two things a week instead. I have bought a frozen Turkey crown. Pigs in blankets and prawns. I think really if I didnt buy anything else I have Christmas dinner sorted ( kind of!).

If i get the other important things as I see them then leave the money essentials until the last few weeks. Hopefully my teens dont decide to cook a prawn stir fry, what could go wrong? I'm hoping to spend a lot less two this way as I will be more focused. I hope

I've got a free range bronze turkey crown coming with my Morrison's order tomorrow, just a small one 1.5kg - 1.99kg but there's only 2 meat eaters so there will be some leftovers and it shouldn't need more than 1.5 - 2 hours in the oven on Christmas Day.

I've bought a few treats . That's about it. We don't spend a fortune at Christmas. It's basically like a Sunday roast to us.

@Oblomov21 I just panic ordered from M&S reading your post Shock ! Your right though, unless there's a 'restock' about half the 'food to order' items have already sold out.

Stuffed Turkey crown
Triple Choc Yule log
Lamb Guard of Honour
Prawn cocktail starter thingys

We bought way too much last year we ended up gifting a lobster seafood platter, Beef Wellington, mountains of sweet stuff...

Have preordered Christmas dinner from Morrisons. Seafood starter, huge turkey crown with all the trimmings and a few puddings for choice. Have bought the ingredients for my Christmas cake but not started my garage stash yet. Did a huge Asda order last year with all the heavy stuff, cases of beer, wine, shloer, and then just bought extras like crisps, chocolates etc every time I did a normal shop. Have most of my gifts bought, only a few things to get now. I did a big order of cards and wrapping stuff so that's here too. Not particularly panic shopping though, this is me every year. I like to start early to spread the cost.

I bought a plain Panatonne , didn't want dried fruits or chocolate chips . Pleased I found one Xmas Grin

I did notice in Sainsburys there were a few 'gaps' (not Christmas things ) which has been in the news , all the warnings .
I'm not going to buy too much in advance but I'll need a few alternatives if I cannot get things .

I got my Christmas Ocado slot a couple of weeks ago & am gradually filling my trolley, I'm up to £320 up to now.

We also have our Covid emergency rations that we use & replace, we are keeping them stocked up in case of shortages.

Yes but that's only because I'm starting a brand new job and I don't know if they will make me work Christmas Day because im a new member of the team. So im ordering the works from booths and I have no shame! If I am working a long day on the ward then we can freeze it and do Christmas another day but if I'm off or off suddenly then we have all the trimmings. Im even ordering a butter pie from them because my mum will probably come up for a few days and when my dad died we lived in an area that sold them as standard but then we moved away and she misses them (he died when I was 12 and I'm 30 now, but it's nostalgia and happiness for her so why wouldn't I do what I can to make her feel good round Christmas

. So that's for her but if she can't make it (she's a vicar and has a hard time saying no to Christmas dinners think vicar of Dibley) Then I'll freeze it

Have you tried Pandoro?

I've just taken delivery of a 24 pack of loo roll and 20 pigs in blankets. Christmas is ON! Grin

Almost everything Christmassy in the Tesco delivery this week was out of stock. The mince pies have a best before date of next week!

mum2jakie · 23/10/2021 12:51

Hmm - buying early has been slightly counterproductive here. Just discovered the kids have opened the box of savoury crackers I bought - ate the best ones and left the others to go stale! Hmm

IncessantNameChanger · 23/10/2021 16:10

From my past experience the crisps, drinks and chocolates are most definitely better bought at the last minute. I'm not going to buy much of that stuff this year. Enough booze for Christmas eve until the day after boxing day.

I have told dh again that I dont want him in the kitchen from 9am only to serve dinner up at 3pm which we do every single bloody year. Then no one wants afters and no one wants tea.

If he does this again ( refuses to let me cook xmas dinner) I'm getting a chicken for next Christmas. One that takes two hours to cook max.
