The Christmas Chronicles by Nigel Slater: Read Along Thread

Here we go people! Smile

I thought we could start reading the Introduction from October 15th at a gentle pace to allow people to join the thread. Then all set for Chapter 1 on November 1st.

The Christmas Chronicles is currently just over £20 on Amazon. Maybe people could share all the options for those who are just joining us, who still want to get a copy.

I'm hoping this thread will be a lovely, gentle, uplifting transition into the Christmas period where we can share our thoughts, recipe attempts and inspiration from Nigel x

I'm SO ready for this, great thread OP x

SwordfromtheStone · 13/10/2021 17:59

I got my copy today! Also managed to snaffle a £6 WHS bargain and can’t wait to start reading.

Garbanzo · 13/10/2021 18:32

Oh fab! I'll get mine out too.

MoonahStone · 13/10/2021 18:38

My book turned up today, looking forward to joining you all 🎄

Etherealhedgehog · 13/10/2021 19:32

Ooh, bookmarking - don't know how much I'll manage but I love Nige, books and Christmas so it's worth a try! I have read and cooked bits from this over the last few years but have always aspired to read one of his cover to cover - maybe this will be the year!

Whatliesbeneath707 · 13/10/2021 21:11

Yes, well done @Dillidilly for coming up with this marvellous thread & for keeping us all with you. Something lovely to look forward to at this time of year 🍁❄️

HazieDazie · 13/10/2021 22:45

My book is currently sitting on the left arm of my chair, I keep stroking and sniffing it 😂

Mary Berry’s Baking Bible is also there but Nigel is currently on top 😆

Dillidilly · 14/10/2021 02:58

@Whatliesbeneath707 thank you!
I've never read the book before, so I'm as excited as anyone Grin
We managed to finish renovating our sitting room in time, and Nigel is sitting on the shelf waiting to be read in the only nice room downstairs!

Following on from the other Christmas books we were sharing in my last thread, when I was unpacking I found The Box of Delights, so I've added that to my list of festive reads ❤

'This is the story of my love for winter, the scent of fir and spruce, ghost stories read with a glass of sloe gin, and beeswax candles with shadows dancing on the ceiling. With recipes, fables and quick fireside suppers from November to early February, I take you through my essential preparations for Christmas and the New Year and everything you need to enjoy the winter months.'

😍😍😍

StormyCornishSeas · 14/10/2021 11:01

So how does this thread work 1/11 onwards? Do we read a chapter a day ourselves then comment on the thread, about what has been said and recipes reviews etc?

Dillidilly · 14/10/2021 11:15

@StormyCornishSeas just however you want x

Some people may want to read everything, some people may just dip in and out, perhaps inspired by things other posters have shared, and maybe some people will just be interested in the recipes.

I imagine the thread will change and develop in a natural way.

Thank you, sounds greatGrin really looking forward to it kicking off

Opal8 · 14/10/2021 13:56

Looking forward to this!
I have a hair appointment tomorrow morning sadly so I'll have to wait until the afternoon..

FreezerBird · 14/10/2021 14:33

I'm going to hold out a bit longer and read the intro all at once on Oct 31 - I fear I'll just read it all if I start tomorrow and then be tempted to start the chapters early!

If I do the intro on Oct 31, the dated chapters will keep me in line from then on, I hope.

I also caved and ordered the Anja Dunk Advent book linked to earlier in the thread. Can't wait!

OnTheHillNotOverIt · 14/10/2021 15:42

Ooh please review the Advent book Freezer when you have it.

Hayup · 14/10/2021 16:26

I'll be reading tomorrow evening. DH will be on nights so I'll be curling up under a blanket, with the fire on. I may even have a Baileys and a mince pie 🥧

FreezerBird · 14/10/2021 16:43

Oh I will! That will be fun.
EerilyDisembodied · 14/10/2021 16:52

Listened to a lovely new podcast chat between Nigel and his publisher about his new book today, that's going on my Christmas wishlist.

HollyandIvyandAllThingsYule · 14/10/2021 16:58

Oh yes that’s on my ‘to buy’ list too!

Crispsginchoc · 14/10/2021 17:20

Looking forward to reading along with you all. I bought my copy last year, started reading it and fell in love with it, then weirdly stopped reading. Going to grab it off the shelf now! 🎄

TrickyD · 14/10/2021 17:31

Sorry if this has already been mentioned, but if you don't mind reading it on Kindle, and have the 'Kindle Unlimited' subscription, it is free.
