Christmas 2021 declutter and clean up - festive fung shui [fwink]

I know it’s blummin early but if I don’t start now I’ll run into the busyness and then I’ll be upset that EVERYTHING IS A MESS BlushAngrySad

So in an effort to avoid that I’m hoping someone might join me. In addition to just cleaning a bit (lot) I’d like to

Empty small under stairs cupboard and put board games in there

Empty small airing cupboard which is rammed with stuff I don’t use them I can get towels and sheets we do use in there

I have a drawer with festive/craft bits in that’s a disgrace too and doesn’t make me feel warm and festive

I am not an organised person so really want to try. So what are your goals for festive fung shui?

Having done nearly all my Christmas shopping and now on to the food shopping, this thread has definitely inspired me.

So far this week the kitchen cupboards and windows have been resorted, labelled and generally tidyed. To much relief. It was long overdue. Still have the fridge and dining area to do, but its massive progress.

Yesterday after an argument with DH who asked me for the thousandth time where x item of his clothing was (he could not fine, needed it yesterday so went and bought another much to my annoyance), I went to Ikea and got wardrobe organising gear and then blitzed them.

Again. Omg the relief.

I am going to do the whole house leaving annoying labels everywhere cos im fed up of DH being unable to find anything.

Then im going to give him a house map. He loves maps so much, he can learn to read one of his own house. I am bloody serious.

I am thinking i can give it to him for Christmas as a present....

(Mind you he will probably lose the map)

Didn’t get any decluttering done yesterday, had lunch out and then had a headache so wasn’t really feeling it.
Today, I’m planning to clean up the mantle piece in the living room which has gathered all sorts of bits! I figured if I write on here what I’m doing then it will actually get done.

I've really enjoyed reading this thread and want to join. I made a thread the other week about the Organised Mum Christmas so doing this would go along nicely with it. Although I struggle to find time these days I need to get motivated!

FiloFaxx · 03/10/2021 09:46

A toy sort out before my DD2's first birthday in a couple of weeks is my main one!

Made a dent in my Christmas shopping but lots of birthdays to go as well Hmm

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 03/10/2021 09:51

Can I join you?

We are moving middle of November, so need to do a massive clearout. We have far too much stuff and alot of junk!

I've gathered all the presents I've bought so far and boxed them up together and my mum is looking after them for me.

Today, im going to wrap and pack the ornaments as we aren't taking the display cabinet. And maybe the bathroom sink cabinet as that isn't coming either. I can store in bags for life for the time being. Plus some plushes I have on display, as im not taking the shelves they are on as we aren't allowed to put up shelves in the new place.

Welcome sorters!
@FiloFaxx please can you link to your Organised Mum Christmas thread?

Oh I hope this works 😂 I didn't get many replies on it though so hopefully can get it busier.

Well that did fail but hopefully you can copy and paste? 😂

I do this every year but this year is going to be a humdinger...

DS is having a new bed delivered today (high sleeper with desk and wardrobe under it) so it's the perfect excuse to go through every item he owns and declutter. He's 10, he will need a LOT of help. It'll have to go in the garage for now and decluttering will commence after school each day this week. Bed hopefully up by Friday.

Conservatory is being knocked down and rebuild begins on October 27th, slap bang in the middle of half term. I've already taken out all of the toys (in IKEA units) and got rid of half to friends, relatives and charity shops. Still need to go through my craft stuff and board games which live in there. Only the most vital will go back in there and I am building or upcycling new storage for those items.

Kitchen is being ripped out in mid November. As soon as the conservatory is built, my focus will be paring down and decluttering the kitchen. I'm also turning a wardrobe into a larder cupboard so that will have to be done before November.

New downstairs bathroom extension begins end of November and the cupboard under the stairs MUST be emptied in advance of this.

Shit. I love everything clean, tidy and clutter free for Christmas and usually it's just a huge clean and sort room by room. This year? Ohhhhhh.

Stage one of declutter complete! We went to the car boot sale today, got rid of loads of crap and made £100 in the process which is a nice bonus.
Now going to take the stuff we didn't sell to charity and start tackling the cupboards of doom

UpintNorth · 03/10/2021 21:23

Oh I love this thread, super inspiring!

Well done @iabvvu great progress.

I love a good declutter, and have been gradually reducing the things I own / we keep over the past few years, which is essential as I have a OH who is a massive hoarder.

This weekend I’ve got rid of another box of CDs/DVDs, two bags of outgrown clothes, a random bag of bits and a tin of mugs. I’ve also sold a big Lego set, and started to declutter the toys/crafts in our living room…and I’ve sorted our summer photo book.

This month I’m hoping to finish the living room declutter. Then I’ll move upstairs to bedrooms and my nemesis - the spare room/office. Hoping to get rid of at least 2/3 bags for life from each room. My goal is to have a place for everything but with a little space to spare rather than every cupboard/drawer being stuffed full Smile

BigGreen · 04/10/2021 13:25

Omg @iabvvu good for you for making £100!

This week I've sold a bed, booked in a bulky waste collection, taken 2 bags to the recycling bank, exchanged some money, plus ordered stuff to sort out kid clothes storage.

OnTheHillNotOverIt · 04/10/2021 14:22

@ShowOfHands Shock at your list. Love your positivity though and it will be great to have it all done.
I feel more resolved to get on with my minor drawer sorting but I may even paint the wall in DD’s room where she has helpfully tried lots of tester pots but not actually painted.

Looks like everyone’s been very busy decluttering! I didn’t do the mantle piece in the end like I had said I would. I sorted out the bookshelf though. I took a before and after picture and it’s looking so much better!

Nice colour co-ordination, there Pineapple :)

This week I've:
Sorted out the kids clothes and put them in nicely labelled tubs
Sold a spare bike
Taken down an old piece of furniture
Sorted out some filing
Taken 3 bags to the recycling
Sorted out the storage on the top of the wardrobe

Bigoldhag · 09/10/2021 12:42

I’ve gotten my declutter pile together, its not as much as I thought once packed away properly. Still going to wait until I drag the decs down from the attic next month and review what to get rid of.

This week I’ve done a bit on my spare room - gotten all the Christmas gift so far organised, and put away stuff that gets dumped in there.

Today I am going to drop off a load of old glass to the glass bank plus some old clothing for the rag bank. Can’t wait to shift them out of my house!

Bigoldhag · 09/10/2021 12:43

Oh and I’ve made some good progress on gifts now.

I have probably done two thirds of it, with some having to wait until next month for ordering anyway (hampers).

Ruralretreating · 13/10/2021 00:44

Can I join too? Surfaces here seem to clutter up as fast I can tidy them, partly because I keep moving small things to high places (kitchen island, piano, any shelf) to stop DD(1) grabbing them. I don’t know why there seems to be grass on top of the piano though, it’s not quite the festive greenery I’m aiming for! We moved at the end of last year and there are still box-filled, chaotic areas of the house e.g. DH and I have no wardrobes still. I’m hoping this thread will give me some motivation and inspiration in sorting it out in time for Christmas.

Ruralretreating · 13/10/2021 11:57

Hurrah! I sorted out a huge pile of DDs clothes and moved them into more accessible drawers. It’s a start…

BigGreen · 13/10/2021 22:57

I started the selling marathon today Smile Doing kids toys first

sensibleheartxo · 14/10/2021 12:30

I made a start last weekend. I managed to take 3 binbags to the recycling centre and another 4 to the charity shop so at least I have cleared a small space in the loft. I also managed to get a few things on ebay but that’s one long boring process! Only another million items to go!

BigGreen · 18/10/2021 20:51

This week:
Toys and bikes sold
Clothes listed
Everything else washed and ready to list

The house is starting to feel much nicer, yay!

AdoraBell · 18/10/2021 21:24

Serious decluttering here, we’re in the process selling our house. If it goes through we’ll be moving just before Christmas 🤦‍♀️

Can’t be bothered to sell things, it’s all going to charity shops.

Good luck with the decluttering everyone 🍷🍷 all round.
