I'm doing ours on 1st December as, even though it is a Wednesday, I randomly have a day off!

What about you?

Yes, we are. On the Christmas topic.

You don’t have to hang out here if you don’t want to...

@Abracadabra12345 just saw that! Thank you, it is a really big part of my winter happiness and brings a lot of joy and hygge to our home. I’ve toned it right down with the amount of decorations though - used to go a bit mad with Christmas everywhere when the children were small but now I keep it pretty minimalist as it feels much more restful and peaceful.

I’m Danish but live in the U.K. In Denmark December is known as the Christmas month and Jul absolutely does start on the 1st. It isn’t necessarily a materialistic exercise though, but actually much more about observing traditions, keeping together inside with family and friends to create plenty of hygge on the dark days/nights, as well as making, baking, and creating, often with the children (everyone participates, right up to teenage hood, and across the generations too). People observe Advent, mark St. Lucia’s day, and all sorts of other things, consciously slowing down to make the most of the season. Of course they do presents and/or advent gifts too, and it’s definitely a time of feasting, but on the whole it’s primarily a time of looking back, looking forward, and just being properly present in the quiet, cosy moments day-to-day whilst enjoying small luxuries with the people you love. It’s a huge part of the culture there, very important to most people.

@PaperDolphin

I normally do first weekend in December but last year couldn't wait and put it up at the end of November. Surprisingly it was still alive come Christmas Day.

For those saying Christmas Eve, how long do you leave it up for?

The 12 days/nights of Christmas.
Nillynally · 24/09/2021 16:11

always around 15th December. I LOVE Christmas but don't want to be sick of it before it even starts. It comes down before new year too 🤣

waybill · 24/09/2021 16:41

Probably 2nd Saturday in December, but now dc are grown it tends to get left a bit longer these days, so it might be the week after. Depends on when DD wants to do it - she's taken over from me now.

InFiveMins · 24/09/2021 17:51

Last Sunday of November.

MrsLCSofLichfield · 24/09/2021 19:07

Around the 15th usually. I am unsure what to do re: the tree this year. We usually buy a real one which is about 4.5 - 5 ft tall, but I need to put a new WFH desk in the living room soon and whilst it's usually fine, I am concerned we might struggle for space now. I could buy a smaller tree, I guess, but not that much smaller...

Maybe I'll wait until I finish work (16th this year) and stick the tree on the desk?

@Gothichouse40

It's September, are we seriously discussing Christmas trees?
I think there is a way of hiding boards you don't want to see - you might want to hide the Christmas board as it is getting more active these days.

MrsLCSofLichfield · 24/09/2021 19:12

Is there a way of hiding whole boards you don't want to see? I would like to do this but my settings don't seem to allow for it. If anyone knows, please tell! Thanks Xmas Smile

@RahRahRa

Threads like this only make me hate Christmas even more - I wonder how many posters are actually Christian? Trees, presents, food - what is the actual point of it all?! 🤷🏻‍♀️
I am a complete atheist. I absolutely love Christmas as to me it means quality time with my young family and slowing down over winter. It makes me happy and planning it is something I take immense pleasure in. Such a shame this thread, posted on the Christmas board, has appeared in active threads today so lots of people now feel it is their duty to put those of us discussing it down because they personally don't want to. It is the Internet equivalent of butting in to someone else's conversation uninvited .

Christmas Eve - Christmas does not start on 1st December!!
It does in our house! But call it the heathen Midwinter Festival if you prefer. Might add that enjoying the thoroughly heathen aspects hasn’t stopped me knitting Nativity sets - currently on the 4th, this one for Gdcs’ school fair raffle in late November. Only Mary, one sheep, and the donkey to go. 🎄🎅🏻
YukoandHiro · 24/09/2021 19:22

GENUINELY thought you said you were going to do it next Wednesday and I actually let out a groan 😂

NoWordForFluffy · 24/09/2021 19:28

@MegaClutterSlut

I normally aim for the 1st of December but as its a weekday, the weekend before Grin
I'm with you! 🎄🎄🎄
sjxoxo · 24/09/2021 19:36

1st December! Assuming the tree man is there & selling his lovely trees from the car park by the woods. And I can’t wait because by then I’ll be on maternity leave and I’ve already bought some insanely soft knitted cosy trousers to waft around in whilst feeling fat & festive 🤣🤣🤣 xo

Cherryrainbow · 24/09/2021 19:53

Whenever my other half can be bothered go get it out the loft, he huffs n puffs over it every year lol 😆 if it was up to me it would be 1st Dec x

Christmas Eve - Christmas does not start on 1st December!!
Advent begins on Sunday 28th November.

Christmas might not start for you until Christmas Eve but that doesn't stop people from wanting to start celebrating the season earlier.

FurzeMinister · 24/09/2021 20:26

Up on 24 Dec (Christmas Eve), down on 6 Jan (Epiphany), as is traditional in these islands.

MeredithMae · 24/09/2021 21:18

1st Dec for me always, going for the Sunday before so 28th November it is! Woohooo!

Genuinely puzzled by those who put everything up on Christmas Eve

evilharpy · 25/09/2021 16:50

@Yankee63

Have some people got nothing better to do! Christmas!!!!!!!!

It’s like wishing your life away

It's no more wishing your life away than booking a holiday for next summer and looking forward to it for months.

The point of it all if you're not Christian is that it's something special and lovely and fun to look forward to in the middle of winter, which otherwise would be long and miserable. Traditions that only happen once a year, decorating the house so it looks all twinkly and festive, having a bit of a feast with things you only really eat once a year, looking for presents that you think people will love, Christmas lights being switched on in town and everyone having hot chocolate and mince pies, children being excited, Christmas films, Christmas songs, making a Christmas cake with my daughter in October and decorating it in December and deciding how we'll decorate it this year, making a gingerbread house, etc etc etc. I'm not Christian and I love it.
Soupseason · 25/09/2021 17:02
