I'm doing ours on 1st December as, even though it is a Wednesday, I randomly have a day off!

What about you?

The first Christmas item to be put out will be the Advent candleholder, as the first candle is lit on the first Sunday of Advent which this year falls on the 28th of November.

The outdoor lights and decorations will go up whenever it’s convenient and will be switched on from Dec 1st. Plus all of the following:

Hanging decorations in our living room bay window, as well as the candelabra in the centre window.

Christmas countdown candle on the dining table as we burn it daily until Christmas Eve.

Finally, I’ll string up the fairy lights on our bannister, to add a lovely glow to the hallway.

Christmas trees will go up about two weeks before Christmas.

It all comes down on Twelfth Night.

Since I’ve lived in the US, I always do it the weekend after Thanksgiving. So the last weekend in November. I can't wait! I love my Christmas decs.

Chunkymenrock · 22/09/2021 21:27

2 weeks before.

PaperDolphin · 22/09/2021 21:30

@CiaoForNiao

The weekend after schools break up. Or a few days after that maybe.
My school breaks up on the 20th so if I did that it'd be going up on Christmas Day! 🤣

Last weekend of November, have to be strict with myself or it will be up in June 🤣

Hedgesgalore · 22/09/2021 21:31

Aiming this year for after my birthday which is 2nd week in November.

Its a big tree and takes me a few days to get everything pulled together and all finished.

After all that effort want it up the maximum amount of time.

Used to put the tree up 1st week in December, it was a 4ft one and took next to no time, my new one is a monster at 8ft. For the last two years I've bought more decorations for it but it seems to eat them or something, needs even more on it. I'm looking for ribbon now to fill it.

MintyCedric · 22/09/2021 21:31

I usually do it during the first weekend in December, but I'm debating leaving it until the weekend before Christmas.

It's just me and 17yo DD and two cats...who usually climb it, knock all the branches askew and try to chew the lights...later it goes up the less time I have to spend redoing it.

AmItheonlyonehere · 22/09/2021 21:33

First week in November here🎄🎄🎄🎄

merryhouse · 22/09/2021 21:35

Probably the 11th or 12th of December. S1's birthday is on the 12th so we always waited till after that but he's away now. S2's term finishes on Friday 10th so it's entirely possible we'll wait till he's here.

When I was growing up (70s/80s) we'd do the decorations on the Saturday before Christmas Eve, but General Society has shifted so much earlier that this felt like depriving the kids Grin

PaperDolphin · 22/09/2021 21:35

I normally do first weekend in December but last year couldn't wait and put it up at the end of November. Surprisingly it was still alive come Christmas Day.

For those saying Christmas Eve, how long do you leave it up for?

OP posts:
CiaoForNiao · 22/09/2021 21:35

@PaperDolphin Grin I think ours break up the week before. If its the 20th then we will put it up between then and 25th. Its never up before schools break up though.

SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun · 22/09/2021 21:36

Probably 18th December. Usually a weekend job and 11th/12th feels a bit early. 18th feels quite late though ….. maybe on a day off during the week in between.

generalh · 22/09/2021 21:36

Weekend beginning 3rd December hopefully, depending when my son is returning from.a 9 mth deployment overseas.

I think I’m going to move in with you. Sounds gorgeous
TheLeadbetterLife · 22/09/2021 21:39

20th or 21st. Take it down on 6th January (though I’d be all for the old tradition of keeping it up until candlemas on the 2nd feb. January is shit).

hiredandsqueak · 22/09/2021 21:40

As late as I can get away with and not before dd breaks up from school. I'm not keen on Christmas and don't like clutter so keep the time the tree is up as short as I can manage.

Suzi888 · 22/09/2021 21:40

29th & 30th November. Grin 🧑‍🎄 DH can’t wait 🤣

WhatDidISayAlan · 22/09/2021 21:44

The last weekend before Xmas Day and it comes down NYE morning. Can’t deal with it around for too long.

catwithflowers · 22/09/2021 21:44

Saturday 11th December. Assuming we are in our new house by then. 🙈😬

evilharpy · 22/09/2021 21:47

Usually the first weekend in December. It's usually down before new year.

TokyoTen · 22/09/2021 21:47

First weekend on December unless we decide to go away

Jumpingintosummer · 22/09/2021 21:54

Probably the last Sunday in November (28th). We usually aim for the Sunday closest to December 1st.
In the midsts of redecorating the house and just ordered a few new decorations to compliment the new scheme Blush.

Tinpotspectator · 22/09/2021 21:56

Between 18-20 December.

StarCourt · 22/09/2021 22:00

@OwlInATowl my DD's birthday is on the 7th so we wait until after that to put the tree up usually

FinallyHere · 22/09/2021 22:05

Advent decorations ( wreath, advent candles etc) up for 1st Sunday in advent

Christmas decorations up on Christmas eve, for the twelve days of Christmas down on twelfth night.
