For me it's Quality Street (even though they taste rubbish compared to when I was little) and fried potato sandwiches for breakfast. The smell of the quality street tin or tub is one of my favourite smells and they smell the same even if they don't taste the same. There's other things too but those two are the main ones for me.

Turkey, cranberry sauce, posh stuffing (might involve sausagemeat or chestnuts), stilton, cheese footballs, Twiglets, pickled red cabbage, port, Baileys, turkish delight, a dish of mixed whole nuts for cracking.

I think those are the only things we have at Christmas which we don't have at other times of the year.

SarahBellam · 20/09/2021 20:07

Do you think that fried potato sandwich would be nice with some chopped up bacon and a fried egg in it?

Whatiswrongwithmyknee · 20/09/2021 20:09

All this Christmas talk must be getting to me as I just ordered advent calendars for the kids.

hairybakers · 20/09/2021 20:12

SkankingMopoke · 20/09/2021 20:38

Coquilles St Jaques (Xmas day starter), smoked salmon and scrambled eggs on muffins (Xmas day breakfast), mulled wine, Negroni cocktails, chocolate covered marzipan, sweet and sour red cabbage, lots of cheese, and sandwiches made with freshly baked bread and filled with all the leftovers.

Mine are stollen, lebküchen, panettone, marzipan chocolate, a huge cheese board, smoked salmon with avocado, posh French chocolates (Patrick Roger, Voisin or Philippe Bel), roast potatoes, and Dark Matter rum. I love Christmas food.

Perfectlycontent · 20/09/2021 20:57

A couple of bottles of Dom, homemade gravadlax to start, locally reared turkey roast with all the trimmings and falling asleep by the fire with a decent single malt.

Is it Christmas yet?

MilduraS · 20/09/2021 21:03

@Bagstolen

MilduraS if you didn’t mind I’d love to know how to make potato croquettes and not sure what they are! Do you make mash then fry it I wonder?
Firm mashed potato mixed with onions or shallots that have been cooked down very slowly (depends on what we have in). The most important part is the breadcrumbs, they have to be Panko breadcrumbs or it's not worth the hassle Grin
FlatteredFool · 20/09/2021 21:07

Fried potato sandwiches are like bubble and squeak I guess. Left over mashed potato, chilled, preferably overnight, then fried up in butter until golden brown. You flip it like a pancake half way through as it's like a potato patty. You want it crisp on the outside. Spread it thickly over buttered bread with plenty of salt. Food of the gods. I have tried it with bacon and the textures don't work. I doubt eggs would either. It needs nothing except salt although I've known some freaks have it with HP sauce.

Most people have never heard of it and look at me gone out but then they try it and the Fool family tradition lives on in another family. They aren't just for Christmas of course but I remember them being made as a wee lass by my dad at Christmas.

Well that's boxing day sorted then!
buttercup1001 · 20/09/2021 22:27

Ohhhhh how did I forget to mention forrier rochier ( not sure I split it right)

Timeisavirtue · 20/09/2021 23:00

Prawn cocktails, buffet on Boxing Day whilst watching the footy...
roses and quality street, pistachios and peanuts.

Rollingwiththehomies · 21/09/2021 00:24

Mince pies.
Turkey & cranberry sandwich at any opportunity in cafes from about 26th Nov-24th Dec.
Baileys.
Ritz cracker with primula cheese and a pickle on top.

bellsbuss · 21/09/2021 00:38

M & S gammon joint with crackling
Homemade mince pies
Homemade sausage rolls
Pigs in blanket
Tubs of chocolates
Homemade shortbread
Champagne whilst putting the tree up and listening to carols
About a zillion different cheeses

goose1964 · 21/09/2021 01:16

Mince pies and tubs of twiglets, the latter seem to taste better than the bag ones. Smoked salmon with scrambled eggs for breakfast.

FlatteredFool · 21/09/2021 08:02

@Rollingwiththehomies my house mate used to do that with Ritz crackers-she put a tiny pickled onion on top. I don't think I ever tried it. Ds loves ritz and primula but looked at me like I was insane when I told him about M's pickled onion on top habit.

@Tigger1895

Bols Advocaat, with white lemonade. I remember being allowed have a sip as a child (probably not the best parenting) and loving it. I desperately want to buy it to see if it’s as good as I think I remember but at 20 quid a bottle I can’t help but think I’ll hate it
You can buy little pre mixed bottles
MissyB1 · 21/09/2021 08:31

Re advocaat; you can make "snowballs" with advocaat and a mix of limeade and lemonade, then pop glace cherry in. Or as Camrette says buy the pre mixed bottles.

OP we make the potato patties but dont put them in a sandwich, we call them potato cakes.
