For me it's Quality Street (even though they taste rubbish compared to when I was little) and fried potato sandwiches for breakfast. The smell of the quality street tin or tub is one of my favourite smells and they smell the same even if they don't taste the same. There's other things too but those two are the main ones for me.

Buck’s Fizz at any time
Cold meats and pickled red cabbage
Sherry trifle
Definitely no turkey with all the trimmings if I have my way!

drpaddington · 20/09/2021 13:39

Pigs in blankets
Brandy snaps

Mince pies warm from the oven on Christmas Eve. I make them during the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, with my daughter's help if she's here. Start of Christmas for us.

Lots of others. Christmas pudding, Bendicks Bittermints, shortbread, rum cake, all things we don't have at any other time of the year. It's usually the only time of the year we have turkey too, and I enjoy cooking and eathing a full roast - roast turkey with pork, sage and onion stuffing, cocktail sausages (don't like the idea of pigs in blankets), gravy made with giblet stock, roast potatoes, roast parsnips, carrots, Brussels sprouts, peas, possibly another vegetable, bread sauce, cranberry relish. Glorious on the day, and lots of leftovers, so minimal cooking for a while, plus some useful things bunged in the freezer for January.

Can't wait!

AuntieMarys · 20/09/2021 13:42

I don't particularly eat traditional Xmas foods ...never buy cake, tubs of chocs, pigs in blankets etc.
However I like a Booths mince pie.

unexpectedthird · 20/09/2021 13:44

Ohhh, great thread. Yum!

For me it's stuffing - I could happily eat a meal that consisted only of different types of stuffing.

Also, much more recently, chocolate panettone. We order a giant one from Carluccio's every year and open it on Christmas Eve for breakfast then snack on it for the next couple of days. I'm sure there are better pannetone available but we love that one.

eew1988 · 20/09/2021 13:46

pigs in blankets, stollen and copious amounts of Asti whilst wrapping presents!

londonmummy1966 · 20/09/2021 13:53

Champagne - preferably from after church to sitting down for dinner at 4ish...

Mrsjayy · 20/09/2021 13:54

Oo I love Asti its so underrated its much nicer than prosecco imo

ArrrMeHearties · 20/09/2021 13:56

Pigs in blankets and the tins of quality street that you can pick the flavours that you like

PattyPan · 20/09/2021 14:00

Stuffing balls
Red cabbage
Marzipan
Schloer

VioletBick · 20/09/2021 14:06

My 11 year old daughter’s mince pies - she has permanently cold hands and as a result makes the best pastry.

Quality Street - used to be in glass jars when I was little. I acknowledge they don’t taste the same but they are Christmas to me.

AF Mulled Wine while listening to Carols from Kings. Preferably with rain hammering at the windows and candles flickering.

Turkish Delight - rose flavoured and covered in icing sugar. It instantly transports me to the 80s and being a little girl in my grandmother’s house.

Coffee and stollen on Christmas morning. Perfection.

Sisisimone · 20/09/2021 14:21

Home made sausage rolls hot from the oven on Xmas eve. Mince pies, Christmas pudding, Christmas cake, bendicks bittermints, M&S dark chocolate cherry liqueurs. I'm starving now!

PermanentTemporary · 20/09/2021 14:23

What a lovely thread.

Mince pies - I'm good at them though I say it myself.
Seafood on Christmas Eve - langoustines are my choice
Champagne on Christmas Day
Bread sauce.

Probably all I need tbh

Sn0tnose · 20/09/2021 14:34

Hot home made sausage rolls and cheese straws for a picnic tea on a Christmas Eve. DH always has to have cheese & pineapple on cocktail sticks. We always have DH’s home made stuffing with Christmas dinner and I love a glass or two of limeade (I never drink this at any other time, so no idea why it wouldn’t seem like Christmas without limeade). On Boxing Day, left over roast potatoes chopped up and fried with white bread and butter for breakfast, cold meats with bubble and squeak, stuffing and left over pigs in blankets for a late lunch and just picky bits for later.

Terrys chocolate orange, Roses & Quality Street, After Eights and Matchmakers, Ferrero Rocher, salted and roasted peanuts and pringles are always on the side for picking, along with a ton of satsumas.

hashbrownsandwich · 20/09/2021 14:37

I'm only here for the fried potato sandwich talk.

BrilloPaddy · 20/09/2021 14:45

It's the one time of the year that I'll buy a mountain of cheese. Complete with crackers, sourdough bread, chutneys and celery/grapes. It takes me hours to choose them all Blush

And I love boxing day and having a mountain of leftovers (aka picky bits). Even our DC who've moved out come back boxing day and open the fridge in glee. Their DP's think we're all weird..........

GameSetMatch · 20/09/2021 14:45

Definitely panettone, it’s not Christmas without it!
Twiglets, the only time of year I ever buy them
Christmas cake
Yule log

Quality street that smell is the start of Christmas here...
Mince pies
Mountains of cheese
Gravalax
Turkey
Chestnut Stuffing

Dozer · 20/09/2021 14:55

Grin 5000kg of cheese - yes please!

Also want to know more about fried potato sandwiches!

I have a binge eating problem, so Christmas can be particularly challenging food wise. Probably also why am so drawn to this thread, argh!

My favourites are mealie pudding stuffing (Scottish - oatmeal, pepper and lots of lard, I think), the home made turkey gravy, and fruit cake.

MrsLCSofLichfield · 20/09/2021 15:00

Panforte
Snowballs
Frangelico
Chocolate in marzipan
Florentines
Turkish delight
Panettone
Brillat Savarin cheese studded with cranberries
All the cranberry and apricot stiltons
Stollen
Baileys

BlueberrySugar · 20/09/2021 15:04

Fried potato sandwiches?! What is this?!

VivaJen · 20/09/2021 16:05

Loving this thread

Need to have
iced mince pies
Homemade Christmas cake (just tastes better)
Chipolatas (agree with pp not a huge fan of pigs in blankets)
Delia's Cheese & Onion Sausage rolls
Mulled wine
Big Boxing Day leftover sandwich 🎄

ShowOfHands · 20/09/2021 16:12

All the usual Christmas stuff like mince pies and Christmas pudding but having a real feast on the day makes it feel quite special. We do something ridiculous like 8 different veg dishes (not always the same ones either) and each one is a bit fancy. Normally I stick to 3 types of veg with a roast and at least 2 of them are just steamed. But Christmas Day is the day for spiced red cabbage and leeks in cheese sauce and glazed maple carrots and so on. Even the humble brussel gets paired with prosciutto and shallots. Three types of stuffing too. And cranberry sauce and horseradish and bread sauce and mustard. That's before you get to the turkey, beef, vegan options, pigs in blankets, potato dishes, Yorkshire puddings and gravy. We then eat all of the leftovers in the form of bubble and squeak or decadent sandwiches or pies or curries for the next week or so.

I love the snack cracker type mixes you get with individual compartments of pretzels and similar. As well as the obligatory eat me dates, nuts and raisins, orange and lemon slices and tubs of cheese footballs, twiglets, mini cheddars etc. DD does a fab line in non alcoholic cocktails which always smell like Christmas and she makes mulled wine while I cook which smells incredible.

Aaaah Christmas.
