Who else still likes old fashioned Advent calendars? Just with little pictures?

Having never had any sort of Advent calendar as a child - I still buy myself a trad one every year. I feel a trip to John Lewis looming - they usually have a good selection. 🎄

Yes! Found one last year, and am even doing the thing my grandparents used to do of "closing" the doors again this year Grin Waste not want not Wink

SparklingLime · 15/09/2021 11:14

I love them.

PunkrockerGirl59 · 15/09/2021 11:28

Love them!

TheSpiral · 15/09/2021 11:32

Me! We only started getting the choc ones last year after intensive lobbying from the 10 and 12 year olds.
My holy grail of advent calendars are those where the "windows" and what is behind them are incorporated into the picture - so you open a house window and see a Christmas tree behind, open the moon and see Santa flying across it, open the post-box and see cards inside etc.

squashyhat · 15/09/2021 11:41

Me. No kids or grandkids but DH and I get a picture one every year and take turns to open a door. I always get to do 24th as my birthday is on Christmas Day Smile

When dds (long grown up) wanted the ones with chocolates, I was astonished to realise that there weren’t little pictures as well! Still can’t get my head around that!

I used to love the really corny ones with snowy glitter, but have trained myself not to buy glittery ones any more. Still love corny ones though. I see that JL again has a previous super-corny favourite - a lot of dogs (maybe the odd cat too) in the snowy nighttime, watching FC on his sleigh. 🎄

Me! I love them. They have to have a bit of glitter on though.

mogtheexcellent · 15/09/2021 11:56

Me! for the last 4 years I have managed to track down the 3D buildings ones that were produced by Pheonix trading before they went down.

I love having it on the dining table to open at dinnertime and I have found some alison Gardener ones which are similar so will probably go for that this year.

DD7 has never had a chocolate or toy advent. Kids get so much anyhow and the decent ones are bloody expensive.

Robin233 · 15/09/2021 12:01

I love them.
Had one with a little boy and girl on hanging up Christmas stockings.
They looked just like my 2 when they were little.
Not sure if I've still got it (in the loft ) but we don't bother now they've flown the nest.

TeenMinusTests · 15/09/2021 12:04

mog I love our Phoenix one too. We have a nativity scene one where the figures slot in each day, and we reuse it every year.

SkiingIsHeaven · 15/09/2021 12:06

I always look for a Santa one with a pull string and pictures.

When you pull the string his arms and legs do jumping jacks.

They are my favourite but alas never available anymore.

TheOnlyMrsM · 15/09/2021 12:15

We do though we also have a bowl of tiny wrapped chocolate santas, coins and so on to choose from when a door is opened.

TheOnlyMrsM · 15/09/2021 12:19

We also like the ones with a stained glass effect behind the doors, so you can put it in front of a lamp or candles careful now.

I was exactly the same when my sister got one, when they first came out.

I don't see the point - if you want a daily chocolate you can buy nicer chocolate than you'd get in a calendar.

The point of the advent calendar should be the festive pictures adding to the excitement of the Christmas build up.

TheOnlyMrsM · 15/09/2021 12:20

Oh no! I've broken my own rules and read and posted on a C-word thread before November!

mogtheexcellent · 15/09/2021 12:23

ah. change of plan going for Emily Suttons 3D toy shop this year. Was very tempted by the Coppenwrath lantern houses but amazon reviews say they are covered in glitter which I try and avoid.

evilharpy · 15/09/2021 12:26

My daughter picked this one last year and it's really lovely. Not pictures as such but builds up into a lovely little scene.

foxgoosefinch · 15/09/2021 12:33

I love them! DD was only allowed a chocolate one for the first time last year; but we still had a picture one, and my siblings and I send advent calendar picture cards to all the niblings. DD was keener on the picture ones than the chocolate!

OMG thank you so much for posting this link! That shop is like the home of all my advent calendar fantasies. I’m going to have to hold myself back from buying like ten of these gorgeous beauties and stashing them for all of the next decade ShockBlush

Me. The German ones are especially nice if you can get hold of one.

Thanks @TheSpiral... I am now feverishly googling 'Advent Calender with pictures that make up the scene' !! Until you mentioned it I hadn't really thought about it but now I need to find one! If anyone has sourced any please post a link.
lazylinguist · 15/09/2021 12:54

I rather nostalgically like the ones with just pictures, but my dc would be appalled! And since adults don't have advent calendars in my house, there won't be any picture ones here.

Stompythedinosaur · 15/09/2021 13:07

I do and get one every year. It is officially mine but the dc are always keen to open the doors.

footchewer · 15/09/2021 13:18

Yes me too! Adults are allowed advent calendars in our house!

The kids have spoiled with lego ones and similar by their grandparents, but I love a traditional one.

Recommend searching for Selmer Verlag on amazon (or your online shop of choice) - their advent calendars are the real thing: www.amazon.co.uk/s?ref=nb_sb_noss&k=selmer+verlag&tag=mumsnetforu03-21

I love ordering kitsch German stuff in the run up to Christmas - Erzgebirge Palast are good too for that sort of stuff.

We also have an Advent wreath on our dining table (three purple candles plus one rosacea - one for each Sunday in Advent - and a big white one in the middle for Christmas Day).

But seriously, September gaaah!!!

YoComoManzanas · 15/09/2021 13:38

There were some picture ones in my local post office last year. Depends on your post office though I guess.
