What do you put under the Christmas tree?

Other than presents. We have a special stand for real trees and it’s really good at keeping them straight and as fresh as possible - but it’s not the best looking thing in the world. I’m wondering how to make it look better this year. Thank you!

A tree skirt?

LittleFroggie · 11/08/2021 18:33

@dementedpixie any suggestions of where to find one that looks good?? I can’t find anything online that’s nice at all. Perhaps a wicker basket style one.

We use a large dark red circular tablecloth with a slit from the edge to the middle. Drape it all round the base of the tree and in a ring on the carpet.
Looks nice until the cats sleep on it and get cat hair all over it

cloudyrain · 11/08/2021 18:37

2 cats usually unless they are climbing it.

We also have a really nice wicker skirt (John Lewis) and the only time we add presents is overnight Christmas Eve as the tree is in the front window so it is considered a security risk

I use a cheap blanket as a cheaper alternative to a tree skirt (which always seem to be so pricey)
Depending upon tree theme or general style could do tartan, white/cream fluffy 'snow' one, coloured and sparkly ect.

Justmuddlingalong · 11/08/2021 18:40

A nativity set.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 11/08/2021 18:42

When I was young, my parents wrapped a small table and put the tree on top (it was a 4ft tree)

We got a tree skirt from the range, grey felt with fur trim, about £12 maybe, it looks really nice!

I have a tree skirt with a reindeer ornament either side and a christmas themed train set.

£80+ for delivery Blush

Jumpingintosummer · 11/08/2021 19:06

We have a wicker tree shirt from next

lawofdistraction · 11/08/2021 19:13

A big cream/beige throw draped round. I prefer it to bought tree skirts as it looks less precise.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 11/08/2021 20:09

Gifts and some Christmas treats. They hide the base so never bothered with a skirt. We did have a train when they were younger.

CarolinaWeeper · 11/08/2021 21:52

A red wicker tree skirt from John Lewis. In the past when money was tighter I wrapped one of those big plastic storage tubs from IKEA in Christmas wrapping paper and stood the tree on that (we had a smaller tree in those days.) To be fair it looked alright!

kavalkada · 12/08/2021 06:32

I wrap the stand in dark red tablecloth - all messy - and I love the way it looks.
I put presents, Christmas books, a box that I fill with small gifts (stole that idea from John Lewis christmas display one year).
This is the picture from last year.
It is very cheap tree (less than 10 pounds on sale) and cheap baubles and cheap wrapping paper, but I like it nevertheless

@kavalkada you have so many gifts, no one could see the base of the tree anyway!! Looks great!! Our gifts aren’t there until quite late on so the tree spends a few weeks without anything underneath.

@IceCreamAndCandyfloss so do you have the treats under the tree all through December?? Or does your tree not go up until very late?

@CarolinaWeeper Thanks - I think I may get a wicker one from JL too when they restock!

We have a sequinned tree skirt from Next. It’s a lovely champagne gold colour and sparkles so beautifully (but subtly) in the light from candlelight/Christmas tree lights. I think it was £30.

Movingonupnowww · 12/08/2021 11:00

We have a sleigh which we put under ours. Looks pretty! I also have a tree skirt, I think it was from Dunelm, a wicker one.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 12/08/2021 11:07

Tree goes up later than some, usually about 10 days before. I’d go later but the rest of the family like it up. We tend to put the tins of sweets etc under it then add gifts as they get dropped off.

CarolinaWeeper · 12/08/2021 12:10

@IceCreamAndCandyfloss we tend to keep gifts under the tree that we've wrapped to give to family and friends throughout December. The ones for the DC get hidden away until the big day.

We have a tree rug my mother made for it to stand on and last year we bought "snow covered" picket fence with twinkle lights
They were bought to keep the dog away from the presents but in reality he was not interested but we are keeping the picket fences as they are so cute

MovinOnUp · 12/08/2021 12:54

I had a beautiful burgundy and velvet tree skirt from QVC (back when their Christmas stuff was amazing) it came with two matching stockings.
I changed my colours last year and realised I didn't have anything to cover the bottom of the tree.
Improvised with two fake sheepskin rugs, Looked great and am going to do the same this year xx

Figmentofimagination · 12/08/2021 13:08

We found a circular tree skirt at our local garden centre that is fake snow. And then we have 3 decorative light up Christmas presents to put on top of the snow and a train to go round the snow.

overthethamesfromyou · 12/08/2021 13:12

Some red fluffy fleece material Grin
