What do you put under the Christmas tree?

Other than presents. We have a special stand for real trees and it’s really good at keeping them straight and as fresh as possible - but it’s not the best looking thing in the world. I’m wondering how to make it look better this year. Thank you!

We have a red Christmas tree skirt and a large moose but he stands next to the tree as he is too big to fit under it .

EducatingArti · 12/08/2021 17:23

Op, I reckon you could replicate that Balsam Hill one fairly easily if you can find a wide metallic ribbon that is similar. Measure your tree stand and find a bowl /bucket that fits it at the widest point ( washing up bowl, cheap bucket from B&Q?).
Turn bucket/bowl upside down and measure up how high you want it all the way round. Use a junior hacksaw, electric jigsaw or Dremel type device or possibly just a Stanley knife to cut off the "bottom" leaving you with a collar.
Wrap collar with wide ribbon overlapping a bit at the top so that it still covers the surface where it is wider. Use glue dots or double sided tape to hold the ribbon in place at regular intervals so that is doesn't unravel while you are trying to wind it!

A couple of sheepskin rugs. Looks like snow.

elQuintoConyo · 12/08/2021 17:37

Fake tree here. I put a large piece of dark red fabric on the floor (about 2mx2m) put the tree up and decorate it, then fold the fabric up the tree trunk and tie with really wide burlap ribbon, so it looks like a bulky present. Added bonus is that it catches bits of tree that may flake off every year (€12 tree 17 years old!). Looks great!

I'll see if I can find a photo...

doingadisservice · 12/08/2021 17:38

We have a Christmas blanket.
The cats love to sleep curled up in the stand o the blanket

ShowOfHands · 12/08/2021 17:45

I have a tartan blanket arranged much like Quinto's and then a little steam train. We add some presents throughout December.

catanddogmake6 · 12/08/2021 18:22

@Enko, would you mind saying where you got the picket fence? We have a new puppy this year and that might be an ideal solution. Don’t think
I’ve ever seen one.

AliceMcK · 12/08/2021 18:26

Probably not helpful, but when we had real trees as kids we would stand it in a plastic crate and wrap it like a Christmas present. It was always part of our tradition when decorating at Christmas.

LovePoppy · 12/08/2021 20:03

We have a crap tree skirt

My family always used an old white bedsheet!

LovePoppy · 12/08/2021 20:05

I think I am using tree skirt in a different way than you all are. Mine is fleece and just goes around the base and lays on the floor. So maybe more like a tree rug?

Tried ordering that Next one but it says “currently unavailable” - I’ll keep my eye on it! Don’t they realise people need Christmas tree skirts in August? Grin

Happy shopping!

Stompythedinosaur · 13/08/2021 12:57

We have a train currently and assorted gifts when they are waiting to be given out.

I have many poncetastic pinterest images of minimalist trees with a reindeer skin artfully wrapped around the base that I am saving for when the dc are older.

Antwerpen · 13/08/2021 23:17

@kavalkada

I wrap the stand in dark red tablecloth - all messy - and I love the way it looks. I put presents, Christmas books, a box that I fill with small gifts (stole that idea from John Lewis christmas display one year). This is the picture from last year. It is very cheap tree (less than 10 pounds on sale) and cheap baubles and cheap wrapping paper, but I like it nevertheless
That looks lovely @kavalkada I shall steal the idea of putting small gifts in a basket, genius.

🤣To be fair, not all my creations work out but some do!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 14/08/2021 13:39

We have a heavy cast iron tree stand that holds water for a real tree , though we use a fake one now .

I had a lovely gold/burgandy satin slightly quilted tree skirt bit as everyone trips over the bloody thing .....
Now we have two cats I wonder if they'll let us keep the tree up this year ( this'll be their 3rd Christmas with us )

ShaunaTheSheep · 14/08/2021 17:05

I made our tree skirt.

This year we will have more space so the Hornby train set will be set up around it, and run through tunnels cut from wrapped boxes. The trains will have little felt Santa hats Xmas Smile
