not?
I saw then mentioned on lots of threads last xmas but I am too hot and bothered to look these right for now.

Do you have one? Are they just a gimmick? How are they better than HC made in a pan? Dd 13 mentioned that she might like one but will this be a waste of money like the cake pop machine we got her. ?

I got one for Christmas last year, I LOVE it!! I use it all the time when friends come over as well as a cheeky baileys hot chocolate on my own. Well worth the money in my opinion x

MyFartWillGoOn · 20/07/2021 20:57

I really wanted one last Christmas but at £100 I knew I wasn't going to have a hot chocolate more than maybe once a week so felt like an expensive

Me and DH compromised and spent more but got something we use at least twice daily

https://www.nespresso.com/uk/en/order/machines/original/barista-milk-frother?cid=SEMB2CCUK-ENLOCCRGoogleeNESPRESSO%7CUK%7CGOOGLE%7CB2C%7CBrandAccessories(E)%7CGBRRBrandAccessories(E)%7CBarista%7CGBRRnespresso+baristae&gclsrc=aw.ds&gclid=Cj0KCQjw6NmHBhD2ARIsAI3hrM15mCZDjqAjNsveMCXHbwjbB3s7N84IQmSdcgk5ukVu4xkwC9W-dxUaAlwtEALwwwcB

This is a very fancy milk frother which you're supposed to use with nespresso capsule but never do. It does amazing milk for cappuccinos, lattes etc. Also has settings where you can add ice cubes for iced coffees.
But, I use the hot chocolate setting and add the hotel chocolate chocolate to it (although recently I've used Cadbury's giant chocolate orange buttons!). Amazing hot chocolate. Or, I can add a shot of coffee and change the setting to mocha.

It is twice the price but so easy to use and we use it every day. I just couldn't justify the velvetiser knowing it would have occasional use.

ActiveMilk · 20/07/2021 22:03

Thank you @MrsCrimbo74 and @MyFartWillGoOn. The nespresso looks sophisticated but might be a bit too much for a dd present. Do you use yours only with hotel chocolat HC with the Velvetiser or can you use just ordinary chocolate powder? Brew

My mum got my DH one and he loves it. He's a Yorkshireman, so not prone to approving of gimmicks. He was sceptical at first that it could be that better than a pan, but he says it just makes it frothier and smoother and definitely is better. He uses it all the time; well when there's no a heatwave on! And you can use it with all kinds of hot chocolate brands. He does prefer the higher quality of HC; but that works for me because I can always give him some as a wrap up.

GreatBritishWineDrinker · 20/07/2021 22:32

VEL20OFF

Gets £20 off if that helps your decision? I bought one last week for DC birthday so haven't used it yet as she's not had her birthday but she's a massive hot choc fan so think she'll love it!

autumnboys · 20/07/2021 22:36

We got one last year and ours love it. We buy callebaut chocolate callets to use with it, with HC flakes as an occasional treat.

I put it away a few weeks ago thinking it wouldn’t get used in the summer but it has made its way back onto the counter again.

DoodleBelle · 20/07/2021 22:47

Got one last Christmas! Love it!

ShaunaTheSheep · 21/07/2021 06:40

DH surprised me with one last Christmas, I don't even drink much hot chocolate so was a bit Hmm. The DC use it a lot, they have Green & Blacks for everyday, and HC for treats. I have the occasional HC but use it most days to froth milk for coffee.

The copper coloured one is lovely.

ArmsofOrion · 21/07/2021 11:24

I bought one for my 14 year old last Christmas and she loves it. She puts squirty cream on the top sprinkled with flake.
Her favourite flavour is the salted caramel. We definitely made the most of it during lockdown, not so much in this weather! Would recommend, makes a great gift.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 21/07/2021 21:46

The fact it can't go in the dishwasher makes it a "No" for me but I covet one madly.

I bought some HC chocolate flakes and a rechargeable whisk . I use Alpro , makes it frothy and sweet in a pan.
Still covet the Velvetiser ......

Look on QVC Friday at 8pm they have a HC show and will likely have the Velvetiser

Chocolateemergency · 21/07/2021 22:36

I got one for my birthday at the start of the year and had a post on here about how disappointed I was with it. I got some good tips and it completely changed my opinion and have used it regularly ever since, it really does make good hot chocolate.

Tips were to put the cups in the microwave whilst the machine was doing its thing, made such a difference to the temperature of the drink. Also, realised I don’t like the HC chocolate so use any other powder chocolate which works completely fine.

I’d definitely recommend and I’m sure they often have 20% off vouchers so definitely wait for one of them to come up.

DorotheaDiamond · 21/07/2021 22:40

Dd has used almost every day since I got one…I buy catering size chocolate flakes (2.5 kg for about £15). Crumble them smaller and they work as well as HC but vastly cheaperb

ShaunaTheSheep · 22/07/2021 07:47

The fact it can't go in the dishwasher makes it a "No" for me but I covet one madly.

I'm an 'everything in the dishwasher' person and can cope with rinsing out the Velvetiser. The inside has a non stick coating. I refill it with cold water and a tiny drop of detergent to run it again, then rinse well and leave to dry.

wjg65ka · 22/07/2021 07:52

Honestly I've used mine once. DH bought it for me, I got my sister one and said it looked great and I think he thought I was hinting.

It is a fab little machine I just never fancy hot chocolate

Longbarn5 · 24/07/2021 20:55

I agree with Chocolateemergency tpin that you can use any chocolate, including Options. Makes best hot chic I have ever had and also makes a nice smooth coffee! I also found that I dont like HC chocolate. Prefer the cheap stuff 😁

sunnymondays · 24/07/2021 21:17

How about a Nespresso milk froffer? We've had one for years. It makes incredible hot chocolates. I just put the hot chocolate powder in a mug, froff the milk, pour a little milk in, mix and then pour the rest in. My DP also loves it for making milk for lattes. Much cheaper and more versatile then a velvetiser.

Chocolateemergency · 24/07/2021 22:31

@Longbarn5 Couldn’t agree more, I’ve always got a tub of the mint options on the go 😋

Sn0tnose · 25/07/2021 19:35

I’ve got the copper one, which is beautiful.

It doesn’t make a very hot, hot chocolate, so I always pre heat the mug with boiling water. And I don’t like the HC flakes. I prefer Options or Cadbury’s powder. Absolutely, definitely worth it.

I'm the same. The recommended cleaning method is to run it straight after use with water and a drop of washing up liquid. Other than that it needed a better wipe around once every six months. It's basically self-cleaning.

IMO it's pretty much the perfect present - too expensive and frivolous to bother buying for yourself but desirable.

ohidoliketobe · 25/07/2021 21:54

I asked DH for cheaper version last Christmas (some knock off versions on amazon). He said reviews were suspect so decided to just get the real deal. I was a bit miffed as I obviously knew the price and thought it expensive for what it was, but honestly it's brilliant. No faff at all, literally add milk and whatever your choice of chocolate flakes or power. Set it running and it's done. We used ours every day in the winter, kids with their cheaper hot choc and me with my more expensive stuff! We've still used it in summer, but not everyday. We'll go back to daily use without a doubt once the weather cools down again, it's our treat for when we get in from school pick up.
It's one of those, if you enjoy hot chocolate you'll probably use it. If you're a bit meh anyway you probably won't see the advantages of it/ get use out of it

eurochick · 25/07/2021 22:55

Now we are out of hot choc season I've been using it for cappuccino. It produces lovely frothy milk.

Someone told me you could press the button a second time-it doesn't run for the full 2 minutes, but does heat it up slightly more.
pigeonhole · 30/07/2021 15:21

Smeg milk frother is much better , you can make hot chocolate , froth hot or cold milk or just warm milk , it makes the hot chocolate a bit warmer than the velvetiser and you can put the pot that you make the chocolate in into the dish washer , it's around £150 so more expensive than the HC velvetiser but so much better

furstivetreats · 30/07/2021 15:48

I love ours, I like the hot chocolate (I'm happy with HC but also use pendragon or prestat if I find it in tkmaxx), have tried the coffees and use it sometimes just to do hot frothy milk for tea lattes.
