I've come up with the idea of giving one of my DD's a bundle of her favourite childhood books as part of her Christmas present so that she can read them again with her 3 year old over the coming years. I know this will mean a lot to her. The problem is that I'm struggling to think of enough of them. So far I've got the Velveteen Rabbit, Grandfather Gregory and the Brambly Hedge seasons books. I would really appreciate any help as I am struggling to remember which of the books we had belonged to which era given that I had 5 DD's spread out over 16 years. TIA

I recently discovered a huge box of my old childhood books, and am currently happily re-reading the entire Sadlers Wells (Lorna Hill) series.

There's one book I've been trying to remember the name of. It's about a young boy who falls down the gap between two houses, into a strange other-world, and has to travel back home. At one point he has to swim through a massive lake filled with something like porridge or tapioca. It may also have had something to do with witches in it? Does that ring any bells for anyone? Circa late 80s.

@Talipesmum thank you!! I don't recall God being in it but that is definitely it, Ariadne the coconut spider must be in something else (it was a long time ago.....🤣)

@CamdenLurker

Definitely Not now Bernard, the worst witch and Meg and Mog. I also love the witches by Roald Dahl but 3 might be too young for that!

Also the night before Christmas too.

I love Not Now Bernard. I read it to my little boy bow and he loves it as well!

I'm late 81 but my sister was 78 so my books tended to be a little earlier.

We have some audio books of my naughty little sister, and my younger son really liked listening to them in his “relaxing for bedtime” mode. He became obsessed with wanting “spongy trifle” Smile

Babe the Valant Pig Dick King Smith
Bernstein Bears
Paper bag Princess
The Indian in the attic

Sorry.. I’m a children’s storyteller and am addicted to children’s books!
I have loads and loads of audio cassettes from when I was a child. My father used to buy me a fortnightly magazine subscription that came with an audio cassette. Tell a tale! Found them online too:/

Did anyone have 'Phoebe and the hot water bottles? ' loved that.

Also how about Avocado baby?

The Lion who came to tea
Each, Peach, Pear, Plumb

Breadandroses1 · 27/11/2020 22:12

I think most have been mentioned but we loved the Raymond Briggs books- Fungus the Bogeyman and Father Christmas.

All the Shirley Hughes books.

The Mog series.

I've just started reading my 6yo the Narnia books, and can't wait to do Swallows and Amazons. The Animals of Farthing Wood was a big fave of mine too. I loved the Ramona books as well but DD1 seems indifferent to them. A friend got us the Frog and Toad books which I didn't have (but she did) and they're much loved here too. Has anyone mentioned Flat Stanley?

NoMeatIsHumane · 27/11/2020 22:14

Flat Stanley

Sn0tnose · 27/11/2020 23:32

Uncle by JP Martin. He was a rich elephant who lived in a mansion so big he’s never explored it all, and there were villains and all sorts. I think it’s a bit of a cult classic now.

Franticbutterfly · 27/11/2020 23:34

The Worst Witch. Followed by the Adrian Mole books in early secondary school.

frazzledasarock · 27/11/2020 23:39

Thank you!! I couldn't remember the one of forgotten. DS has a flat Stanley book brought from PoundLand this year. I was a little too excited
