I've come up with the idea of giving one of my DD's a bundle of her favourite childhood books as part of her Christmas present so that she can read them again with her 3 year old over the coming years. I know this will mean a lot to her. The problem is that I'm struggling to think of enough of them. So far I've got the Velveteen Rabbit, Grandfather Gregory and the Brambly Hedge seasons books. I would really appreciate any help as I am struggling to remember which of the books we had belonged to which era given that I had 5 DD's spread out over 16 years. TIA

@Sunbird24

If anyone ever finds a book called Phoebe & the Hot Water Bottles, please let me know! It was my absolute favourite (even though Phoebe was read as Pobby in my brain at the time) and I have looked everywhere.

Other favourites have all been listed I think, other than all the little Ladybird hardback fairytales with gorgeous illustrations. We gave all mine to my old primary school when I was a teenager and the kids DREW on them! 🥺

@WindblowingSW I don’t think I can justify that 😩

missrabbitismyhero · 25/11/2020 22:07

Oh I just love this idea. I wish my mum would do it for me! So lovely and thoughtful

bluetinpinkteapot · 25/11/2020 22:14

I'm sorry to jump in on this OP, but I have been searching for a children's book from this era, maybe slightly later. It was a chapter book, aimed at maybe 8 year olds, a Christmas story and it was about a little girl who puts a paper angel decoration in her window.

I know that's really not a lot to go on, but if anyone recognises it I'd be immensely grateful.

BillStickersIsInnocent · 25/11/2020 22:25

Flossie Teacake! I want to re-read that now with Pineapple dance studio in Covent Garden and the fur coat transformation.

Just thought of all the Jill Hutchins books - The Mona Lisa Mystery, Follow that Bus, the House that Sailed Away.

I’m a 79 baby and loving this thread.

Sparklehead · 25/11/2020 22:27

Cops and Robbers (Janet and Alan Albherg)

catpoooffender · 25/11/2020 22:29

Ooh I have a question for people on this thread, if I may. I've been trying to remember the details of a book I read at my Gran's house when I was little. I think it was a book of short stories, and one of them was about a child who cut a castle and maybe a town out of paper, and at night time it came to life and there were lights and real little people living in it. Does this ring any bells for anyone? 🙏🏻

SingingSands · 25/11/2020 22:31

1979 baby here too!

Burgler Bill
The Shrinking of Treehorn
Walt and Pepper

Those are the three that I loved as a child and I still have them.

TiddlesUpATree · 25/11/2020 22:33

Also a 79er
My faves were giraffe pelly and me, revolting rhymes and Dr Seuss oh the places you'll go.

CatteStreet · 25/11/2020 22:35

Has anyone mentioned Meg and Mog?

The Bears who Stayed Indoors. Had such fond memories of this and found a proper old copy at a book sale a couple of years ago. Wonderful.
A House is a House for Me
The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark
The Story of Holly and Ivy (think it was Rumer Godden. It was so sad in parts I can't bear to read it with dd, though)
Meet Mary Kate

CatteStreet · 25/11/2020 22:36

Oh, My Cat Likes to Hide in Boxes is perfect for a 3yo.

stellagibbons · 25/11/2020 22:37

@Blurpblorp

Oh wow you should include Morris' Disappearing Bag. This was my favourite when I was little. And it's a Christmas story too!
Yes, Yes, Yes! I still have my copy of Morris' Disappearing Bag and it was one of my favourites as well.
