I've come up with the idea of giving one of my DD's a bundle of her favourite childhood books as part of her Christmas present so that she can read them again with her 3 year old over the coming years. I know this will mean a lot to her. The problem is that I'm struggling to think of enough of them. So far I've got the Velveteen Rabbit, Grandfather Gregory and the Brambly Hedge seasons books. I would really appreciate any help as I am struggling to remember which of the books we had belonged to which era given that I had 5 DD's spread out over 16 years. TIA

What a lovely idea!

The Lucy and Tom books by Shirley Hughes. Very similar to the Alfie books. They have a Lucy and Tom’s Christmas which is my favourite Christmas book ever (although my own DDs don’t really like it Hmm, they let me read it to them sometimes to humour me Grin).

Can't believe nobody has mentioned Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. The original version, not the film tie in. I used to LOVE this book. I got it out on repeat from the Library.

Obviously Stig of the Dump too, Secret Seven and Famous Five. The Enid Blyton Fairy book - remember that there was a story about ribbons being made from rainbows and stardust.

If anyone ever finds a book called Phoebe & the Hot Water Bottles, please let me know! It was my absolute favourite (even though Phoebe was read as Pobby in my brain at the time) and I have looked everywhere.

Other favourites have all been listed I think, other than all the little Ladybird hardback fairytales with gorgeous illustrations. We gave all mine to my old primary school when I was a teenager and the kids DREW on them! 🥺

I'm a 1976 baby and this thread is bringing up so many happy memories, what a lovely idea for a gift. Other favourites of mine were In the Night Kitchen and Maggie Scraggle.

By the way, having attempted to share my favourite ‘older kids’ books like joan aikens joan lingards and jean ure, i’d scratch my alan garner suggestion just there and say stick to books your daughter might read to her children, so only go up to age 7 or 8. Older kids do not always appreciate our dated gems of literature
