Classical Christmas background music?

Any suggestions for some vaguely christmassy classical background music to create a bit of atmos/fill the silences (there will probably only be two of us for Christmas). Like baroque stuff but open to suggestions. Not keen on choirboys or ‘crossover’ type music as a rule, but interested to hear if others have any favourites.

The messiah seems like the obvious choice. But personally I’d just stick on classic fm (lazy )

Happyoldbat · 21/11/2020 13:18

Well, that’s quite a sensible suggestion ( and probably what I will end up doing), but it would be nice not to have to listen to the talking between the records.

The BBC Sounds app has a series of music podcasts called Christmas Mixes, all sorts of genres in there including some classical, no chat.

Ooh, thank you! Mumsnet is so useful.

I tend to stick on "the best Christmas album in the world ever" - can't bear a bit of Slade at Christmas Grin

Love the BBC Sounds app suggestion, thanks

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 21/11/2020 14:39

BEAT! Can't beat a bit of Slade at Christmas!! (sorry Noddy!)

AutumnLeaves26 · 21/11/2020 14:45

Classic fm is amazing at Christmas time!

@lifeinahamsterwheel that's my favourite album, reminds me of my childhood!
raspberryrippleicecream · 21/11/2020 14:57

Classic FM had permanent Christmas music on a loop last year, on a different channel.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 21/11/2020 15:26

@AutumnLeaves26 it's so good isn't it! I'm really looking forward to playing it this year as I'm not going to be in shops very often so won't be sick of hearing all the Christmas tunes!

AutumnLeaves26 · 21/11/2020 15:44

@lifeinahamsterwheel that's true as it is all the old favourites you hear all the time. I am at the stage when I hear a Christmas song that's on it I assume the next song will be the one from the album 😂

thelegohooverer · 21/11/2020 18:04

I stick on a wedding album I bought to pick the music when I was getting married. It’s not particularly Christmassy but it gets me in the mood.
I might put together a playlist on Spotify this year.

guffaux · 21/11/2020 18:07

Nutcracker score is a lovely cd for Christmas

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 21/11/2020 18:39

I love Carols from King’s albums. But I guess that’s what you meant by choirboys...

I’d still respectfully suggest you try it in the background at least once - it is very calming, peaceful and atmospheric imo.

Coldhandscoldheart · 21/11/2020 18:51

Oh actually, I’ve also got Kate Rusby’s Christmas album which is quite nice.
Film scores? The Harry Potter music is quite Christmassy & the music from bbc narnia and the box of delights. Always makes me think of dark nights & buttered crumpets in front of the fire.

Andylion · 21/11/2020 18:52

My mum had this CD and now my siblings and I each have it.

Classical Christmas background music?
APipkinOfPepper · 21/11/2020 19:00

I second the Nutcracker. I also like “winter” from the Four Seasons, and there is a lovely piece called “Carol Fantasia” (but no singing so good for background Christmassy atmosphere!)

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 21/11/2020 19:01

Oh yes definitely the nutcracker!

elizabethdraper · 21/11/2020 19:02

Spotify have a playlist of Christmas classical music
It's my go to from the 1at December

transformandriseup · 21/11/2020 19:07

Hooked on Christmas is a great album and is a mixture of instrumental Christmas carols and 70-90's Christmas songs.

MrJinxyCat · 21/11/2020 19:21

Michael Buble’s Christmas album has been my go to, every Xmas for the last few years, love it so much.

Tumbleweed101 · 22/11/2020 09:55

Spotify playlists and my Alexa! There is a lovely one that plays for 11hrs. Might put that on as I go to bed so it's on softly when kids wake up.

Yes, you can't beat it.
Neilsfavouritechilli · 22/11/2020 10:01

Take a look at Alexis Ffrench. He has a couple of Christmas themed albums (Home is his latest one). Always gets me feeling Christmassy

SpnBaby1967 · 22/11/2020 10:52

My favourite xmas album is Jason Manns & Friends Christmas with Friends. So easy going, singalongable & a nice refresh of some classics
