If you do your shopping early, when do you put the gifts under the tree?

Have close to 80% of Christmas shopping done. Almost no storage space. We are putting our tree up tomorrow. Is it weird to wrap and put our gifts under it over a month before Christmas?

@Trickyboy I always want December to feel Christmasy without any pressure, so I shop by end of October, then during November I clean out every cupboard, organise myself, write Christmas cards, do the wrapping and plan meals for Christmas week. Then in December, we’re out and about doing activities and trips and I still go shopping, but to buy frivolous stuff like a book for myself. I started this early prep after a really stressful Christmas Eve 2014 where I was still running around the shops buying presents at 5pm 🙈

Comefromaway · 14/11/2020 22:02

Our dog would destroy them

I keep stuff at work, we have a spare office that is barely used

Thewinterofdiscontent · 14/11/2020 22:06

I put the tree up second week of December and all the presents we’re giving go underneath and then ones we get given.
DS has a sack which Father Christmas puts his presents in and that’s slung fairly nearby.
I don’t think DS has ever commented that I don’t leave him any under the tree.

My only note of caution us that as a child my cat did a big runny poo under the tree all over my presents ( guess she was trying to dig it into the soil at the base of the tree). A couple of paperbacks didn’t make it.

giggly · 14/11/2020 22:11

@Trickyboy given the series of lockdowns this year I’d not be wanting to leave it until mid December. As it is we are being asked to remain within our local council areas in Scotland which reduces the variety of shops quiet a bit.
In answer to the questions dc presents go into big sacks once they are in bed. All wrapped and in the garage from about the 20th December until then in various hiding spots around the house. Mind you I don often forgot where I’ve put things

NullcovoidNovember · 14/11/2020 23:29

I have always put some under the tree from us... Just in case fc doesn't make it..

I wrap them well and expect them to be touched and shaken .. And gazed at 😂...

About 2 or 3 each.. Ready for the bounty on Xmas 🎄 morning..

GarlicSoup · 14/11/2020 23:39

@Trickyboy

Am I weird .. haven't even thought about Christmas yet .. it's still the 15 th NOVEMBER !!!

Tree goes up 20th December.. until 12th night (6 Jan)

I will shop for Christmas probably between 15 th and 23 rd December.. am I the only one that wants Christmas to feel like Christmas ? and when I say 'feel' that includes the Christmas shop ?

So why are you on the Christmas board when it’s still only NOVEMBER? Grin
murmurgam · 14/11/2020 23:46

The idea of having to dust Christmas presents just seems very wrong

Flushii · 14/11/2020 23:47

On Christmas Eve

Changethetoner · 14/11/2020 23:48

I don't like to put them on display too early - am paranoid some robber is going to peer in the window, spy the pile, and come and rob us. (not that there will be anything very valuable , but they don't know that, and I'd hate for a burglary - it would kind of ruin the Christmas spirit).

RuffleCrow · 15/11/2020 07:44

I take it Father Christmas isn't a factor in your house op!

OddBoots · 15/11/2020 07:51

Christmas Eve here but then our tree is visible through the window and the local police advise not putting gifts in sight.

People do Father Christmas in different ways, the OP might do the stockings only way (or another variation)
pinkksugarmouse · 16/11/2020 23:27

No small children or dogs (elderly cat not interested) but I will already need to block the tree when my hamster is in his ball so having to shift presents as well would be a hassle. They will come out on Christmas Eve before DH & I go to bed.

kavalkada · 17/11/2020 07:15

We put our tree on second Saturday in December and all presents but those from Santa go under the tree (Santa brings just one present for each child in our house). So presents we give to other people until they are sent and given, presents we get from friends and family, presents we buy each other.

My six year old likes to watch them and guess what is in every one of them. It will be interesting to see how my one year old daughter is going to react.

Equimum · 17/11/2020 09:19

Very late on Christmas Eve. Until 23rd, presents are in the attic (they then spend a night in the under stair cupboard with the children being very carefully policed to ensure they don’t go in there.

GameSetMatch · 17/11/2020 09:22

Christmas Eve, I couldn’t put gifts under the tree because thedog would open them all, now my three year old would be too tempted so it’s easier all round to not put any under the tree.

BiddyPop · 17/11/2020 09:58

Normally as I start to wrap them in Mid December onwards. Never earlier than 12th Dec though, too much temptation and likelihood of getting damaged from vacuum cleaner etc as well as people "just having a feel". If I do manage to wrap earlier, I keep them in bags upstairs out of the way.

Thedarknightsaredrawingin · 17/11/2020 10:19

We have several trees but the one in the hallway is for gifts going to other people. I put them there as I wrap early December.

Gifts for our house go under the living room tree as they are received then I add a few from us around the 18th. Add a few more on the 22/23rd then Santa adds his on Christmas Eve.

MercedesDeMonteChristo · 17/11/2020 14:56

We put presents for others outside our household under the tree immediately. I have tried to see if we can put some stuff under the tree this year but DS3 (10) is insisting Santa delivers them - though he knows I have bought them and will wrap them then Santa just does the postie job. I thought he would be over Santa this year, but he is not.

HintOfVintagePink · 17/11/2020 15:07

Gifts from non family members go under the tree when received. Family presents only appear on Christmas morning with the stockings. Our DC are young though. I think DS wouldn’t sleep on Christmas Eve if he saw the pile of presents before he went to bed!

I love this idea of having a separate tree for ‘put going’ gifts

It isn't! No children here for Xmas.

To all who answered, the presents are almost all wrapped and under the tree. We will probably be adding a few more until Christmas. BUT i'd love to have more storage space and be able to hide them for a longer time.

Christmas Eve, after the recipients have gone to bed because that's when Santa comes.
Even if that involves standing there saying (no children involved any more), 'Right, Santa wants to put the presents under the tree and get to bed, so ptetend you can't see him'. No touching of presents till opening time after church.
