If you do your shopping early, when do you put the gifts under the tree?

Have close to 80% of Christmas shopping done. Almost no storage space. We are putting our tree up tomorrow. Is it weird to wrap and put our gifts under it over a month before Christmas?

I have an I extended attic with some dark shadowy corners to hide things (I use black cloths) but I also have a few places around the house to stash things until I get a chance to put them in the attic. I’m obviously some kind of sociopath but it gives me a little thrill knowing there’s a gift hidden close by and my family are completely unaware.
Gifts to other people go under the tree shortly after it goes up. I don’t put presents for the dc out until very close to Christmas as it’s too much hype. And Santa gifts appear on Christmas Eve.

I always remember dh’s face the year of Robert when I produced two enormous boxes and he realised that they’d been completely invisible for a couple of months. He still hasn’t figured out that one.

Lovemusic33 · 14/11/2020 10:51

Most of them don’t go under the tree until Christmas Eve as dd will open them (she has ASD and no control) 🤣, would love to be able to put them under their earlier but maybe only a week before or they will gather dust.

MrsKingfisher · 14/11/2020 11:02

I have to use different wrapping for each person and write their name because one year I was so organised had everything done and wrapped by late nov..come Christmas Eve I couldn't remember who's present was who's!

SlatternIsMyMiddleName · 14/11/2020 11:09

My Mum put the fear in me years ago, about burglars coming in just before Christmas and being able to find all the pressies easily as they are in one place. So I don’t put them under the tree until Christmas Eve. We also don’t leave the house empty from that point.

Apologies to anyone I have passed my fear onto.

Thank you all! Just had breakfast (live in Brazil and woke up late) and came here to read the answers. We don't have children and our home has very little storage space. I'll probably put the gifta under the tree, or at least a few. I was feeling like a crazy person for wanting to do this but since some of you do too now i feel i've found my people! If i had kids it'd probably be diferent. I do have cats, but they are not allowed where our tree is.

@4forkssake

If you're stuck for storage, do you have suitcases you can hide them in when wrapped
I have smaller suitcases and travel stuff inaide the bigger ones, so no room at all. The gifts are currently in our guest room, on the bed.

I put mine in empty laundry bins (I've a few)

I dont see how xmas eve adds any magic, if anything a month of gifts building up under the tree is magic.

I dont have a set time, they just go out as they get wrapped but with a boysterous toddler who loves to get into things when your not looking I'm still trying to figure it out for this year otherwise they would get unwrapped as fast as I could get them under the tree lol.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 14/11/2020 17:32

Late on Christmas Eve.
Don’t have young dcs any more, but when we did it was too tempting/tantalising for them otherwise.

Still do the same now.

ellentree · 14/11/2020 17:34

Our tree won't go up for three weeks but then presents will go straight under. They are mostly wrapped already. Children have never opened any (they are told of they open before Christmas, they don't get!). As a child looking at them was part of the anticipation and my children love it too.

niki26 · 14/11/2020 17:52

Presents to each other/from family go under the tree on Christmas Eve - it was a tradition with my family and I'm sticking with it because when I was at an age where I was choosing presents for my siblings myself it was so exciting to see them react to the wrapped gifts! I've always loved giving gifts more than receiving! Smile

I do understand - we live in a tiny house, plus we are on the market and having frequent viewings so trying to keep clutter free and tidy! So most of the gifts are in the summer house - not very convenient when I have to carry them from the house in the pissing rain!

2anddone · 14/11/2020 17:57

When I wrap gifts to give people who won't be here on Christmas Day they are put in gift bags and placed next to the tree to hand out as I see them. Any gifts given to us before Christmas go straight under the tree. Presents from me and Santa go out Christmas Eve once everyone is in bed.

HelenaJustina · 14/11/2020 18:09

I put everything under as I wrap it, it looks so festive and hides the stand. Don’t start wrapping until 7-10 days before. We don’t do FC so DC know that presents are from us, they also love wrapping their own to each other and putting them under. The excitement grows as the pile does!

Pickledpenguin · 14/11/2020 18:10

Never! My dogs would piss on them. The tree has fencing around it and they piss against that the swines.

thelegohooverer · 14/11/2020 20:22

@Inthetropics I think I am, but luckily for everyone I just channel it into Christmas prep. Smile😈

TheStripes · 14/11/2020 20:24

We put gifts under the tree as soon as they are bought and wrapped. Only stockings are saved for Christmas Eve.

Floralnomad · 14/11/2020 20:26

Presents go under the tree Christmas Day morning here , our dog loves unwrapping things , doesn’t damage the contents but just likes unwrapping , he’s very methodical about it .

BakewellGin1 · 14/11/2020 21:05

I am massively worried about attracting burglars so DC presents are all wrapped and stored in parents loft until 23rd when they move into my bedroom...
Presents from others go under the tree as we get them given, but luckily my DM worries more then me so they give us ours on Xmas Eve...
Aside from that youngest DS is going to struggle with no touching of presents massively

TheTrashBagIsOursCmonTrashBag · 14/11/2020 21:10

Ours go under the tree on Christmas Eve after the kids are asleep. I can’t imagine how bashed up all the presents would be by Christmas Day if they were left under the tree all that time. And it would be too much for the youngest especially to not rip into any.

BecomeStronger · 14/11/2020 21:14

Presents always well hidden until Christmas morning. I don't know if it is a thing but my parents always thought having them obviously on display under the tree was tantamount to inviting the burglars in.

Holothane · 14/11/2020 21:26

In-laws to be sent about 28th of November our to go under tree Christmas Eve.

UndertheCedartree · 14/11/2020 21:37

@ritzbiscuits - sounds like my bedroom! Grin

Trickyboy · 14/11/2020 21:46

Am I weird .. haven't even thought about Christmas yet .. it's still the 15 th NOVEMBER !!!

Tree goes up 20th December.. until 12th night (6 Jan)

I will shop for Christmas probably between 15 th and 23 rd December.. am I the only one that wants Christmas to feel like Christmas ? and when I say 'feel' that includes the Christmas shop ?

Bluntness100 · 14/11/2020 21:50

Like most people on Christmas Eve.

I think if you can’t store them it’s fine, but it’s very early to put your tree uo, never mind have the presents sitting under it, for what is nearly two months still.
