Gifts for people who only want a bottle of wine

By this I mean my dad, he is the single hardest person to buy for. He would be happy with a bottle of wine, but I feel so mean when my parents and siblings have bits.

I have has some successes in the past upgrading his everyday items but I've run out of things to give. His favourite gift was a framed photo from my wedding but I only plan of getting married once so that's out!

What I'm asking is, should I just get him the wine? I have tried getting posher wine but he said not to bother. He does get over edibles that he enjoys.

I can't be alone?

I also hate ‘stuff’ and love it when people just buy me wine.

Recently people seem to have upgraded this to a bottle of gin, but honestly I’d much prefer a nice bottle of wine!

Cheese would also be appreciated if he likes that?

He's told you what he wants so buy it - or 2/3/6 bottles of wine.

I am probably your father's age - there is nothing I want or need, I loathe clutter, if people really want to buy me something (& I genuinely wish they wouldn't, I don't need money spent on me to make feel valued) then a charity goat gift or wine is fine.

We have stopped exchanging gifts in our extended family (apart from under 18s), we still love celebrating Christmas but there's no hassle or expense regarding unwanted presents and having to get rid of them after Christmas Grin.

@WillSantaBeComingToTown bit have you had one I’d the pull up ones? They’re genuinely amazing

Mortgageandmoney · 09/11/2020 17:47

The wine subscription is a good idea! I'll look into it. I don't actually drink so I have to rely on research various wine lists Grin

Just get him wine! I'd love it if more people bought me wine 😄

Redtartanshoes · 09/11/2020 17:49

I got a lovely carafe from amazon was under £20. Also a wine aerator which was under £10. One of these and some nice wine would go a treat. Can recommend Sunday Times/Laithwaites wine club

Ragwort · 09/11/2020 17:49

shiny we had a similar experience clearing out a deceased relative's house - years worth of lovingly chosen but unused gifts - all carefully hidden away. Sad

Mortgageandmoney · 09/11/2020 17:49

Just to say, I have never bought him anything tooty. Well, I don't think so. He writes a diary every day so I bought him a really nice pen. None of us like unnecessary stuff, but we do like to exchange gifts as we are a small family with no children.

As someone who also requests wine and I mean a nice ish bottle ie not the £4 and under range Grin.
I never bloody get any why I love wine it's better than cash or rubbish bath stuff .

Mortgageandmoney · 09/11/2020 17:52

Decided then, wine it is. Plus his fave whisky and some edibles he likes.

Glad you decided on a gift, OP. I was going to suggest one of those personalised bottles of wine so the label itself would say Happy Christmas, Dad or whatever you wish.

joystir59 · 09/11/2020 17:53

Just get him what he wants.

Mortgageandmoney · 09/11/2020 17:53

I'll probably talk to my brother about combining given he only wants wine. My brother did get married this year so he has the framed photo idea Grin

If he likes wine, he might also like port?
Get both!

Youseethethingis · 09/11/2020 17:55

You can get wine subscriptions now... surely if one bottle is good then several is better? 🍷 Grin

Iwonder08 · 09/11/2020 17:58

Buy nicer wine and a cheese selection to go with it

fifig87 · 09/11/2020 18:00

My dad loves listening to the radio going around the farm so he uses a pocket radio or another idea we have for this year is a good head torch.

I'd love a case of wine myself!

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 09/11/2020 18:05

Last year I bought someone one of those apply hats with a Bluetooth radio inside it. I think you could also answer the phone!

purplecorkheart · 09/11/2020 18:07

I was also going to suggest that you get a pocket radio for him if he likes current affairs that he can listen to when he works.

Sonicthehedgehogg · 09/11/2020 18:09

Is it red wine (Sorry not RTFT)? How about an aerator? (Not sure how to spell it).

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 09/11/2020 18:15

What about a lovely hamper, with wine obvs

Apileofballyhoo · 09/11/2020 18:19

Oh we got my Dad a wind up radio and torch one year - possibly had solar panel also, I can't remember. I think it was a camping/emergency type thing but DF just used it for pottering around the garden. He loved it. His friend liked it so much that my DM gave it to the friend after DF died.

legalalien · 09/11/2020 18:25

there was an article in various papers this morning (linking DM as it doesn't have a firewall) about England's first beaujolais-style wine, called English Nouveau and available from Waitrose. Could be a thing if he's an English farmer/ might be interested in the background?

Onedropbeat · 09/11/2020 18:48

I always ask for wine and secretly hope for a case of wine Grin

Often people prefer to buy me smellies instead as they think it’s a nicer present

Different strokes for different folks and all that

Get the wine and nibbles and just get plenty of it

jocktamsonsbairn · 09/11/2020 20:33

Find out the wine he really likes and get him that as he might not like posh stuff! Someone bought my dad a bottle of chateaux neuf du pape one year and he didn't appreciate it, says he preferred the McGuigan stuff at £5-6 a bottle!
My ex mil once confided to me that everyone bought her stuff they thought she should like but all she really wanted was a bottle of vodka and a packet of fags! She was happy as Larry after I just went with it after that conversation! Much to my XHs disgust as he liked showy presents! Got her a housecoat one year for a special birthday to wear while enjoying the accompanying fags and voddie!
