Gifts for people who only want a bottle of wine

By this I mean my dad, he is the single hardest person to buy for. He would be happy with a bottle of wine, but I feel so mean when my parents and siblings have bits.

I have has some successes in the past upgrading his everyday items but I've run out of things to give. His favourite gift was a framed photo from my wedding but I only plan of getting married once so that's out!

What I'm asking is, should I just get him the wine? I have tried getting posher wine but he said not to bother. He does get over edibles that he enjoys.

I can't be alone?

Haha! I'm definitely doing as you all suggest.

The radio would be a good idea but he's mostly in the tractor/van or with the others. He always knows what's top of the charts Wink

Can anyone recommend a really good shortbread brand?

Yep my dad's the same, he likes whiskey, unusual beers and smelly cheese. I've given up on anything else and now just get what he likes. Everybody's happy!!

What about membership to the Wine Society? My dad loves good wine, not really fussed about presents, and we bought him a lifetime membership last year. He loves it. Probably one of the best presents we've ever given him.

I was a bit confused with how it worked initially and they were very helpful on the phone. As well as the membership (which was a one-off fee of £40 and I think he got some of that back to spend on wine) we put some credit on his account, roughly enough to buy a case. After he'd spent that he then bought his own. But there's no obligation to buy anything. I can't remember the exact details but I think it's very flexible - you can buy just a single bottle or a mixed case of whatever you like. Basically, he gets a wine magazine every now and then, which he browses through and chooses himself half a dozen bottles or so.

They have their own fleet of delivery vans, which my dad thinks is brilliant. He has been known to call me just to tell me that he can see the Wine Society van driving up the road!

I'm Scottish and though I prefer home made (dm) shortbread my shop bought favourite brand is Deans.

If your Dad likes wine get him wine - but get the wine that he likes, not an expensive one that you think he should like. The point of a present is to please the recipient surely? Not to educate him or show off or even worse overload him with wine related crap. If he wanted a festive bottle opener he would already have one at his time of life and presumable if he wanted to taste Chateaux neuf he would already have done so.
I like bubble bars. If I ask for them I almost always get loofahs, bath bombs, face cloths added into the mix. I once even got a dressing gown on the strength of asking for bubble bars! Just no.
I like the sound of your Dad

I'd love a good bottle of wine, I hate 'stuff.' Definitely no fancy glasses and bar kit, if he wanted it, he'd have it already.

Get him his wine I’m having loads of books on my kindle and I can’t wait, physical presents are slippers and oodie, much better for him to have what he wants,

Sweetener12 · 10/11/2020 08:21

I'd just get him what he wants first plus maybe something additional, but his wish better be fulfilled. Maybe get him a good wallet or a good belt. You say he likes sports, so maybe get him a photo calendar with the photos of his favorite teams or players, or something like that (check out Shutterfly or Photo calendar creator for that, there are plenty of templates etc). All these would be both practical and would make a good gift for a person that doesn't really need something.

Make a hamper with wine and cheese and nibbles.

When all of this nasty Covid business is over, what about a tour of a vineyard? My DH is farming stock too, so loves anything like that - they get to have long dull conversations about harvesting, processes and farm machinery Grin

Thanks so much everyone!

We have a vineyard very close which he's usually poking about at Grin
