Hair straighteners for teen dd. Help!

There is so much choice it's overwhelming.

She has suggested GHDs... but there are so many different models I feel lost. Her hair is long and fine and pretty straight if that makes a difference.

Cloud Nine have also been mentioned.

Has anyone already done research and can advise? I'd like to know exactly what I'm after come Black Friday!

Tia

Don't bother with cheap ones.

I use ghds personally, this pair must be ten years old and still going.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 01/11/2020 09:34

Is budget an issue? If not I'd be inclined to get her the GHDs since that's what she's asked for. There will be lots of gift sets in local hair salons if you want to wait til this lockdown is over and then shop local.

zhivagodr · 01/11/2020 09:35

Cloud 9 are the best!

SenorFrog · 01/11/2020 09:38

GHD's used to be great but the bloke sold the company DBC they went downhill. He then set up Cloud9. I've had the same pair for years now, they're brilliant.

Feckmesideways · 01/11/2020 09:38

I have the GHD Platinum hair straighteners for a few years now which are great, they come in a head protective case, have an automatic sleep mode if not touched for 30 mins. My hair is long and fine and it does a good job of smoothing the hair along with straightening it.

Here’s a gift set same price as the straighteners themselves. If you use the code TREATS you also get free hairspray.

And... not DBC

Another GHD fan here and been using them for years. Haven't tried cloud nine but my hairdresser did and went back to GHDs. We got DD a pair on Amazon last year on Black Friday.

Crackery · 01/11/2020 10:11

I'm happy to get GHDs. Or Cloud9s. Assuming my choice is between the two. But even within each brand there are several choices. That's my (first world) issue...

Think this is enough to persuade me of GHDs. I had a pair in the past and they lasted over a decade.

But which GHDs? Range from £109 to £189. What's the difference?

@Crackery I can give you a student discount for ghds if you want it?

I have fine straight hair so I'd just get a normal pair.

Twilightstarbright · 01/11/2020 10:45

Sorry I'd get platinum.

I loooove my ghd platinums. I got them last year on black Friday, they had quite a good deal x

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 01/11/2020 10:50

Just get the standard ghds. I have thick frizzy wavy hair and the standard ghds make it smooth and straight and glossy and thinner.

nicerbeing · 01/11/2020 10:50

I bought DD cloud nine original for her birthday, she loves them. Another ex GHD user!

fantasmasgoria1 · 01/11/2020 10:50

I paid £30 for a pair of nicky Clarke straighteners. I have had them for over 4 years. They are 230 heat and have been good!

Twilightstarbright · 01/11/2020 10:51

Look fantastic have 20% off ghds with code newbie

olympicsrock · 01/11/2020 10:52

I would buy a daffni . Quicker and easier to use and do an amazing job!

MrsSnitchnose · 01/11/2020 10:55

I've got the classic GHD IV. Think they were about £150 when I bought them but they have them on offer for £95 on Amazon at the moment with a choice to spread the cost if you want/need www.amazon.co.uk/ghd-Original-IV-Professional-Styler/dp/B000CSLJDW/ref=sr_1_7?dchild=1&keywords=ghd+V&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1604228013&sr=8-7

Fatted · 01/11/2020 10:56

Things you want to look at are:
The temperature - if her hair is quite fine and straightens easily she won't need super hot ones
The size - small thin ones are better for short fine hair, large wide plates are better thick and long hair
Styling - Is she only going to use them for straightening or does she want to curl her hair with them etc

I think 15 years ago, GHD'S were the only straighteners worth the money. Now they are all very similar. I've naturally curly hair and I used to only use professional straighteners. My current ones are Remington ones I got cheap from boots last Christmas and are just as good as the GHDs I used to have.

Anon9990 · 01/11/2020 11:07

Another vote for cloud 9! Wouldn’t go back to GHD!

CanSomeoneElsePickMyName · 01/11/2020 11:22

My hairdresser recommended these after my ghd's of ten years died.
They are really good. Only had them a few months but I'm really impressed.

freezedriedromance · 01/11/2020 11:26

My GHDs have been going strong for nearly 16 years!

Crackery · 01/11/2020 11:58

@Twilightstarbright

Sorry I'd get platinum.
Thank you for your kind offer. But have a student discount already. In your first post you said normal pair and then next post said platinum. Why platinum? What's the difference except double the price ( on amazon...)
