...there’s a fantastic National Geographic book - IIRC The Little Kids’ First Big Book of Dinosaurs. I think someone mentioned it on here last year, so thanks for that, whoever it was!

It’s a big hardback, with huge full colour illustrations, plus an adult size figure to show how big they were, and plenty of info, but the pictures are the main thing.

I bought it last year for Gds, who was still only 3 at the time - he adores that book and knows the names of many which the rest of us had never heard of.

I came here like others to say dinosaurs are for girls too! My 12 year old dd has wanted to be a palaeontologist since she was 3.

For slightly older dinosaur obsessed children the encyclopedia prehistorica is fantastic. Beautiful pop ups.

Why didn't the OP say for dinosaur-obsessed DCs? It's a conscious decision to type the word boy. Why? Because all gender stereotypes tell us dinosaurs are for boys. The 'Toys for Boys' aisle in the thankfully long gone Toys R Us had plastic dinosaurs. Pyjamas with dinos on are found in the boys section of kids clothing shops. And then someone recommends a book and without giving it a moment's thought, says that it would make a great present for a boy.
If you can't see how deeply ingrained this nonsense is, you're not paying attention.

Completely derailed the thread, I might be a dinosaur myself but everything everywhere ends up being categorised in some way, often it's the only way to sort stuff it doesn't mean you have to buy into it. If I want a car cleaning kit chances are I need to look in gift for dad section. If I want a light up mirror for male grooming it's coming to be in beauty section. We all know where to look for things. Yes things shouldn't be stereos typed, but nobody would bat an eyelid at girls wearing dinosaur pyjamas, does it matter there in the boys section.

My DD got teased at school for her dinosaur lunch box, while a friend got teased for his unicorn one. Children pick up on stereotypes.

‘Walking with Dinosaurs’ DVD set is a must for any budding dinosaur expert. DS had loads of books, it was actually the reason he learned to read. He would spend hours reading dinosaur facts.
He even had an imaginary dinosaur friend, a triceratops called Sharp. I once asked him if Sharp had got in the car with us, only to be told not to be silly and he was too big to fit in the car. I then asked if he ran behind “ no mummy, he rides on his motorbike!”. I still drive along one road and picture a triceratops on a motorbike driving through the field next to it!
His reception teacher also told me that he brought the imaginary triceratops to show and tell one week. On another occasion he had the whole class digging up the bark looking for fossils. He was obsessed and if asked will still real off various facts about the subject, although at 16 it’s very uncool.

No, it's not. It's really, really not - it's the opposite of conscious. The OP is very well aware that dinosaurs are for everyone. She just had boys in mind because she gave this book to a boy last year, that's all.

@ImaginaryCat, it was not a remotely conscious decision to type boy instead of child. As a pp has suggested, I dare say I was unconsciously thinking of my little grandson.

But please feel free to enjoy thinking I was deliberately conforming to outdated stereotypes - as you no doubt will.

Incidentally my slightly older Gdd is not particularly interested in dinosaurs - she’s much more into sparkly pink things and Barbies - and this despite having a mother who was an out and out tomboy, never remotely into anything girly, hated ever having to wear a dress, lived in shorts and T shirts , inc. at school. (Abroad.) So there has never been a shred of maternal influence either way - it’s innate.
