Anyone else putting the Christmas decorations up earlier than usual?

We usually put the tree and outside lights up about the first or second week in December but this year we’re thinking of doing it much earlier.
The idea is to try to cheer everyone up, teenage DCs are keen so I’ve just got to persuade DH. I’m thinking of around a month earlier. Anyone else thinking the same? It’s been such a horrid year so anything positive has got to be good.

I am doing aiming for mid November

ShellyLou1234 · 10/10/2020 20:02

First weekend in December and although I love Christmas I couldn’t do it any earlier however, do what makes you and your family happy.

aToadOnTheWhole · 10/10/2020 20:07

First week of December. My DS has an end of November birthday so i hold off until after his birthday decorations come down and then go Christmas mad.

FrancisCross · 10/10/2020 20:27

It’s my mum’s birthday 15th November and I’m planning on decorating the day after. Can’t wait 😊

Parker231 · 10/10/2020 20:29

No. We always do them the weekend before Christmas. No plans to change our traditions.

Shufflebumnessie · 10/10/2020 20:37

We normally put ours up last weekend of November/ first weekend of December (depending on which is closest to 1st December).
DH recently suggested putting the outside lights up a bit earlier this year which I thought was a nice idea. Not sure exactly when though.

VestaTilley · 10/10/2020 21:29

No. It’s not even Advent when you’re in November! I don’t know what’s happened to our country and adults behaving like kids with no ability to do delayed gratification.

The same people who seem to have the decorations down on Boxing Day and don’t understand Christmas has twelve days- none of which are in November.

FilthyforFirth · 10/10/2020 21:36

I would like to but not sure. Having my baby mid Nov so likely to be end of Nov, begining of Dec. Will depend on how well I heal and how early I can persuade DH!

NotExactlyMrsCurrentAffairs · 10/10/2020 21:40

I used to curse when other people put up their decorations too early.
Then last year, as we had plans every weekend in December, we decided to, reluctantly, put them up in November.
It was a game changer!
I get stressed about putting them up as I've got so much stuff it takes a whole weekend. Putting them up early enabled us to enjoy every weekend in December doing festive activities, going to events and seeing family and friends and not having to leave a weekend free to put up decorations. We've decided to carry on putting them up early for those reasons.

RevolutionRadio · 10/10/2020 21:44

Ours usually go up on the 1st December. If the end of November is a weekend we will do it then. I'd like to put them up earlier coz I love my Christmas tree!

Parker231 · 10/10/2020 21:54

@VestaTilley - many of us don’t follow the timescale of Advent but have our own traditions. For us, the tree and decorations go up the weekend before Christmas and come down when Christmas is over on NYE. There is no right or wrong.

SunShinesAutumn · 10/10/2020 21:58

Usually 1st December but going to start mid November this year. Takes so much effort and love I am sad to see them go on 6th January. Christmas for me is the season not the day and fairy lights so so help this year!

CountFosco · 10/10/2020 21:59

Yes, we're going to buy the tree on 19 December.

I've got a friend who tells me every year I'm a scrooge, the grinch, or just plain miserable because I don't put my tree up the second its December. She then posts disbelieving posts on Facebook from boxing day onwards because she can't understandab why people still have their trees up Hmm
movingonup20 · 10/10/2020 22:03

Advent Sunday is my normal but not sure if we'll have moved then so might be later.

See comments like that piss me right off.

Christmas can be what you want it to be. There is no right or wrong.

UndertheCedartree · 10/10/2020 23:43

If it makes you happy, why not?

I tend to decorate the house on the evening of 30th November so when the DC come down on the 1st it looks nice and Christmassy. I do them a special 'Christmas breakfast' and give them their advent calendars. Then we get our tree in the middle of December and the DC decorate it. I keep everything up until 6th Jan.

For the vast, vast majority of people, Advent has no bearing on Christmas and isn't something they subscribe to, apart from perhaps buying a chocolate calendar.

In our church, the Christmas tree, lights and all the nativities (of which there are many) goes up in time for the tots Christmas party, which usually ends up being prior to the first Sunday in Advent. Grin

kavalkada · 11/10/2020 06:55

We'll do the same as always, decorations first day of Advent, and tree the second weekend in December.

The trouble is this year I have a very lively one year old girl. Our tree stays till January the 6th, but I'm not sure it will survive this year. Well, we'll see.

And as for you, do what ever makes you and your family happy. Who cares what other people think.

Bluntness100 · 11/10/2020 07:00

I can understand your reasoning but I think mid November is really early. By the time Xmas comes the decorations will be something you barely even notice as the novelty will have worn off, I’d wait till dec at least.

NotMaryWhitehouse · 11/10/2020 07:06

@elQuintoConyo

No. We'll put ours up the weekend of 11-12-13 December. They stay up until after epicfanny, so putting them up in November or early Deccmber I'd get bored of them - and I LOVE Christmas.

Plus we have an early-December birthday child in the house, so they always go up after that.

We have got a few bits up for hallowee'en already, a 2D articulated skeleton which we make into ridiculous poses, and the feather boa monster door wreath.

I have crammed my Christmas notebook with ideas and things I've already bought, though, and lists of useful websites etc. And a note of wherer i've hidden things Grin

Oh , well now I want a Christmas notebook!! Mission for today......
Roselilly36 · 11/10/2020 07:14

I was only having this conversation with my eldest son the other day, yes we are putting up decs earlier this year, to cheer us up. Probably last week of nov. We usually go away just before Xmas so we don’t worry too much about decs at home, so as we will be at home we are going to make more effort.

ApolloandDaphne · 11/10/2020 07:19

I won't be putting any up at all until I know we can have people to stay for Christmas. I can't be arsed to put them all up just for me and DH.

Lazysundayafternoons · 11/10/2020 07:21

We always put them up in mid-late November. This year it will be the last week of November because I have that week off work.
I just like the brightness that the decorations give on the dark evenings.
