Heading to the supermarket tomorrow to buy food to graze on over the coming days. Already sorted for cheese - inspire me with this year's other must haves for the cupboard or fridge (actual meals are sorted - looking for the stuff in between - or instead of, if I get too lazy)

My Bendicks bitterminta! Live abroad now and haven't been able to get them in ages, found them in Aldi the other day and bought 2 boxes, I'm so excited! They're hidden in my wardrobe and may stay that way, don't think the rest would appreciate them enough... Grin

We have got through over 1kg of candied nuts already. I have made 2 1kg batches and while some have gone as gifts an awful lot seem to have just disappeared.

Really easy to make. Use whatever nuts you like - preferences here are for a mix of pecans, cashews, hazelnuts and almonds.

Approx 1kg of nuts
2 large egg whites
2 tbsp water
2 cups sugar
4 tsp cinnamon
2 tsp salt
1/2-1tsp cayenne pepper (optional)

Preheat oven to 120C and line baking trays with baking paper

Beat egg white and water to soft peaks

Add nuts to egg and toss until well coated

Combine sugar, cinnamon and salt (plus cayenne if using) in a bowl then add to nuts and turn over until all nuts are well coated

Put nuts in single layers on baking trays then bake in oven for 1 hour - stirring every 15min

Eat until you are sick

Sweet chestnut puree. I only get it at Christmas; best eaten as a fruit replacement in Eaton mess.

Herja · 22/12/2019 09:24

I am definitely making that @SlayingDragons !

Herja · 22/12/2019 09:25

@SlayingDragons. When you say cups of sugar, are you using American baking cups, or just a kitchen mug?

Rainallnight · 22/12/2019 09:25

I’ve been dieting since September and have reached my goal weight of losing a stone, so looking forward to pretty much everything really!

I had some panettone yesterday that was lovely!

And I’m looking forward to cheese.

But I’m going to try to be a bit restrained because I don’t want to undo all the hard work.

f00k · 22/12/2019 09:30

Chocolate & coconut covered almonds.
Twiglets.
Elizabeth Shaw Mint Crisp.
Doritos & salsa.
Cranberry & soy glazed cocktail sausages.

Freezer is full of canapés - mini things you cook in the oven. Love a canapé...
Also looking forward to the crab on toast that is our traditional Christmas Day evening snack (usually lunch is too late to make an actual meal a possibility)
Yesterday's breakfast was a proper east end bagel with cream cheese and smoked salmon - then it felt like Christmas has begun. Xmas Grin

lucysmam · 22/12/2019 09:36

I clicked to say CHEESE!! All the cheese. & the majority will be mine Xmas Grin. I'm specifically looking forward to the christmas pudding one that no-one else likes!

Leflic · 22/12/2019 09:41

Stilton, smoked salmon, mince pies, pickles and chutney

I can massively over eat all of them so I haven’t hadn’t any for months. Pickles are the worse because I eat loads more to go with them.
Can’t wait.

ThatsMySantaHisBeardIsSoFluffy · 22/12/2019 09:54

Definitely all the cheese! Plus the buffet food. I love a buffet!

marchingonwithmother · 22/12/2019 10:32

Sausage meat stuffing

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 22/12/2019 10:34

Frazzles! I've already started on other stuff, or have it year round, like smoked salmon and mince pies. Drink wise, I've bought a lemon gin cream liqueur that tastes like lemon puff biscuits which I can't wait to open.

SlayingDragons · 22/12/2019 12:37

Oh sorry - yes it’s an American recipe. A US cup of sugar equates to about 200g in weight.

SlayingDragons · 22/12/2019 12:38

Enjoy! I have already refilled the bowl which is sitting in the living room once today and the DC have only been up two hours! Xmas Blush
