What would your recipe be?

Gammon plated with the turkey for Xmas dinner but I want to cook it on Xmas eve in the slow cooker - want a simple easy recipe...help! Normally just cook it in coke but not sure if that's the right recipe for xmas dinner?!

I'm doing mine in posh apple juice then glazing with honey. Nothing fancy but it tastes nice. I'd stuck with what you know.

Ricekrispie22 · 20/12/2019 06:27

In cider!

Vodkafairy75 · 20/12/2019 06:42

I do mine in cherry coke, it’s much nicer than normal coke as it gives off the right combination of sweet and salty. Has to be full fat coke though, I’ve tried it with the diet versions and it doesn’t quite taste the same. Plus Christmas calories don’t count do they?!

RiojaHaze · 20/12/2019 06:44

I just stick a load of brown sugar on top of mine in the slow cooker, no liquid.

OverByYer · 20/12/2019 06:51

I either use coke or apple juice, even orange juice if nothing else

MotherTime3 · 20/12/2019 06:54

This is the thread I didn’t know I needed 👍🏻 Thanks everyone

Bonkersblond · 20/12/2019 06:56

I do what RiojaHaze does, bag of brown sugar, is yummy.

Thecatisboss · 20/12/2019 06:56

Doing mine in the slow cooker in ginger beer and finishing off in the oven with demerara sugar and mustard.

sashh · 20/12/2019 06:58

I wouldn't add anything,

MonkeyBaublesOfFestiveDoom · 20/12/2019 06:59

This is a perfect thread. My daughter dislikes Turkey so we're just having Gammon. Was thinking doing it with Coca-Cola I may change my mind.

ProfYaffle · 20/12/2019 07:11

A thick layer of demerara sugar at the bottom, turn the joint over half way through to make sure both sides soak it up.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 20/12/2019 08:24

@MotherTime3 yep me too.
I normally soak, boil and then glaze and oven bake mine.
But now I'm going to slow cook in cider on Christmas Eve and oven bake to glaze on Christmas Day.

Bloody love mumsnet

Did a practice one a couple of weeks ago as I couldn’t remember what did last year - went with slow cooking in coke and then covering with demerara sugar and golden syrup and baking for 20 mins. So good.

JingleBelle27 · 20/12/2019 12:20

I do mine in honey and mustard (not loads of mustard though or it becomes a bit overpowering!)

It’s my absolute favourite. I’m hungry just writing this. Xmas Grin

rainywinterday · 20/12/2019 12:25

Thanks all - I might just do coke like normal but I did fine this recipe which sounds nice and similar to others - apple juice / cider and a sugary/honey glaze.

I usually soak mine for 2 days and then boil and glaze in the oven. I did it once in the slow cooker and it was so salty. Do you soak it before you put it in?

BrokenWing · 20/12/2019 13:00

I treated myself to an Instapot at black Friday but haven't used yet, I have a big gammon to cook but a bit scared of doing it for Xmas in the Instapot for the first time. Does it taste better slow cooked or just the same as boiling on the stove?

VillageFete · 20/12/2019 13:06

I do it every year, it’s lovely.

Boil the gammon joint first to get rid of the salt

Stick it in slow cooker with full fat coke, a star anise, some bay leaves and a chopped onion - it smells so festive Xmas Grin

I cook mine low for about 8 hours.

LucyLeak · 20/12/2019 13:08

Thanks OP, I need this thread! Does anyone have any recipe links? I like the idea of using coke in the slow cooker.

Direwolfwrangler · 20/12/2019 13:12

I have experimented with slow-cooker gammon and not had much luck. I find it too salty, so I now pre-boil mine which sort of defeats the point of the slow-cooker.

Coca Cola (or Cherry Coke) Gammon is my favourite though.

Parttimewasteoftime · 20/12/2019 13:20

Cinnamon coke full bottle eight hours.

MoodLighting · 20/12/2019 20:01

I did mine with ginger beer, cloves and an onion. It was ace!

Disfordarkchocolate · 20/12/2019 20:11

I asked my butcher and he said soak overnight but no need to boil to reduce the salt.

BentNeckLady · 20/12/2019 20:21

I’m doing mine with ginger been and a ginger glaze this year but not in the slow cooker as I don’t like it when it’s falling to bits - prefer being able to slice it.

WhiskersPete · 20/12/2019 20:36

Oooo I fancy trying the sugar method out. How much sugar do I use?
