And how many people

Hair - you can go a lot more expensive than M&S. Farmers markets, delis, fortnum & mason, cook etc That said, I'm as tight as cramp and I'm breaking out in a sweat just thinking about spending £1k+ 😬

Stompythedinosaur · 22/12/2019 22:33

We have 4 adults and 2 dc, we've spent about £300 (and dm bought a joint of beef on top). I thought that was quite a lot (and includes Xmas eve and boxing day too).

Hairwizard · 22/12/2019 22:37

@rug
Yes me too!🤣

CherryPavlova · 23/12/2019 08:57

Hairwizard I think it’s less about what your serving (Unless you have a Fortnums/Harrods delivery) and more about numbers and what you’re including. I haven’t totalled but 22 on Christmas Eve, 17 staying 3/4 nights, 70 on Boxing Day quickly adds up if you include alcohol.

A Majestic delivery of 50 bottles of fizz is near that total before you’ve even considered food. That’s buying cheap fizz at around £25 a bottle.

Elbeagle · 23/12/2019 08:59

Of course most people don’t have the space to host that many people.

MaisyMary77 · 23/12/2019 09:02

I’ve spent around £500 for 10 people; 6 of us and 4 guests.

nettie434 · 23/12/2019 10:30

I'm being daring and I'm risking buying a turkey half price on Christmas Eve

I have never dared do that but often thought it would be a great idea as long as there was a back up plan - eg joint of beef. I reckon most of us might get away with not cooking turkey (especially as lots of people include a vegetarian/vegan main) but no roasties and no pigs in blankets would cause a revolution.

BarbaraofSeville · 23/12/2019 11:17

That’s buying cheap fizz at around £25 a bottle

I think we must have different definitions as to what is 'cheap fizz'.

Given that Champagne attracts a significant price premium but many people can't really tell the difference between that and other fizz or actually prefer another type of 'fizzy wine' and there are many other styles that are considered to be as good, if not better than 'cheap' champagne, I would really question buying champagne when catering for a crowd.

For example, I bought a selection of Cremants and Cavas from Sainsbury's that were reduced from £10-12 per bottle to £8-10 per bottle and were in the 25% off when you buy 6 deal, so came in at an average of £6-7 per bottle and that's still not what I'd call 'cheap', more good value for what I got and a bit of a treat.

TheAlmightyFinch · 23/12/2019 11:22

I don’t know about buying a turkey half price on Christmas Eve, but I wish the sodding retailers would stop popping up on Facebook to tell me cheerfully that some of the presents I’ve bought and wrapped are now half price, and I could have saved myself several hundred £££’s Angry. I’m looking at you, Ted Baker....

Elbeagle · 23/12/2019 11:25

I prefer good cava to cheap champagne.

Saladd0dger · 23/12/2019 11:31

2 adults and 3 children. £365 all our food and drinks plus a couple of gifts. Paid £65 for it all though as I saved up my clubcard vouchers and shopped when it was staff double discount ☺️ That includes all food for the next week including a New Years roast and a Leg of lamb

Karwomannghia · 23/12/2019 11:35

For a party for around 30 - drinks and nibbles (but people brought drinks too) Xmas eve for 11 and Xmas day for 13 plus normal meals in between it’s been about £260. I’m a cheapskate judging by this!!

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 23/12/2019 11:42

I’ve just been shopping for alcohol and spend £472

However this is for the whole of the Xmas period, we are hosting Xmas eve, day, Boxing Day, and NYE and day. (Different groups of friends and family)

I haven’t don’t a food shop yet, however have asked our guests to chip in, so some are being meat/fish dishes, some are bringing the starters, sides, dessert etc...

YomAsalYomBasal · 23/12/2019 11:55

£150 for 11 of us

Jenniferturkington · 23/12/2019 12:05

A lot.
£180 on a Waitrose order.
£120 on M&S order.
We have already spent however much on ingredients for the cake & mince pies.
This is for nine people covering Christmas Eve and Christmas Day , and left overs for five of us for the rest of the week.

Grasspigeons · 23/12/2019 12:18

Wow. People must christmas food eat solidly for 2 weeks.

sansou · 23/12/2019 12:26

6 people for 3 days approx £300. We hosted 12 people for 3 days a couple of years ago which came in at £500.

Sammi38 · 23/12/2019 14:52

I’d love to see a Christmas shop that cost over £1k!

On alcohol we’ve spent a grand total of; £25, and that was a bottle of baileys and some supermarket Prosecco. We’re not big drinkers though.

DustyMaiden · 23/12/2019 14:58

Roast dinner part not expensive. Cheese pickles snacks and dips confectionary and booze is.

MotorwayDiva · 23/12/2019 15:26

4 adults and preschooler, for three days plus the weekly food shop was £150. Few bottles of wine, lots of picky bits, loads of vegs, small Turkey as with all the extras no one wants much, ham and salmon for other days.

CherryPavlova · 23/12/2019 20:33

BarbaraofSeville I agree re cheap champagne. If it’s not from a decent house, it’s often not worth drinking. We do Tinwood as local and cheaper than Nyetimber.

AveEldon · 23/12/2019 20:37

£65 turkey, £20 ham are the main extras here, the rest is just the usual expenditure

Postmanbear · 23/12/2019 20:41

8 people, 4 days. £270 on food, booze being bought by other family members.

TheGlaikitRambler · 23/12/2019 20:47

£80, hosting 8 people. This includes 3 game roast, a gammon, nut roast, veg, pibs in blankets, stuffing, prawns for starter, a homemade trifle, a cheese board for later.

wontletmelogin · 23/12/2019 20:48

Hosting on the 27th, 14 of us. Will be party food, cheese board etc. I think I’m at around £250 so far with drinks. Need to do a Costco run the morning of for platters and desserts - budgeting about another £100 for that!
