We are hosting 12 Xmas eve and 8 Xmas day then just the 5 of us Boxing Day. Then 10 New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

£250 on booze
£180 on Xmas food shop includes nibbles and cheese etc etc
£50 on turkey
£100 on New Year’s Eve takeaway.

We host every year. Looking forward to a day when someone hosts us to be honest.

TheAlmightyFinch · 19/12/2019 21:25

I don’t really understand why NYE has been brought into hosting Christmas? Aren’t they two different things? Confused

There’s 12 of us and we are eating out on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, and then having a big buffet here which will include friends and wider family on Boxing Day. The total cost will be £££££ but that’s because we’ve chosen to eat out somewhere naice and to order things like fancy organic ham and turkey and Cook canapés for Boxing Day. We could have done it all much more cheaply. Last year there were 5 of us and we spent about £300 on food and drink for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

It doesn’t make you a better person to spend more or less than anyone else. It does matter that you enjoy whatever you do. God bless us, every one Wine!

Arrowfanatic · 19/12/2019 21:40

5 of us for xmas day and 7 for boxing day. Probably will spend around £150 including booze.

Daisydoola · 19/12/2019 21:45

I've never seen a turkey that would feed 22 comfortably.

RunQRun · 19/12/2019 22:04

@Daisydoola but have you ever seen a Mumsnet turkey? Crown Wink

cultmaskid · 19/12/2019 22:27

@IM0GEN I really agree

So I've finished the shop now no more changes and it's coming in at 750
I did about 400 on booze I think around 20 bottles but that does include some champagne maybe 4 bottles or 3
And then cava as I prefer to Prosecco
Some nice white
Some very nice red and some average red

But my parents contributed 500£ and I am so grateful
5 adults from Christmas Eve eve to Boxing Day night

I know this wasn't what the OP asked but for those who spend a lot; can you not ask family to contribute or bring things so it's not just you? MIL is hosting it and doing the ham, veg & sides, we're doing the turkey, desserts and juice, an auntie is doing beef and something else etc and it's BYOB. I much prefer this than going and expecting everything done for me, but maybe that's just me.

HeronLanyon · 19/12/2019 22:52

Whatever everyone spends - and it will be different according to means/debt/saving/deals/numbers/length of stay/age of guests etc etc - it all sounds great and have a bloody good time ! Xmas Smile

ChanklyBore · 19/12/2019 23:16

@IM0GEN

Box of Tunnocks for £5 to feed 22....I bought a box of 16 marks and Spencer marshmallow teacakes in m&s yesterday for £1.49. They had three varieties. You can buy a box of tunnocks in my local coop for £1 and they are expensive... there are six in a pack....a fiver would get you 30.

A Christmas cake for 22 for £10 - I used to bake Christmas cakes and we sold a large one for £12, iced, and that was a small local business with very few economies of scale...that was a ten inch round which would work out at 38 servings approx...

IM0GEN · 19/12/2019 23:29

Thank you Chankley . I will check out the tea cakes for my hungry teens. One is never enough.

I suspect my idea of a portion of cake is different from yours....

marchingonwithmother · 19/12/2019 23:34

Don't know but I'm going to add it up now:

Snacks, cheese, xmas cake, mince pies and cupboard items like stuffing, cranberry sauce bought with £123 of Nectar points (also did food bank shop in with this).

Turkey, ham and pigs in blankets yet to buy using remaining £60 on nectar card

Vegetables, prawns, party food, more sausages etc £60

Beer £26
Baileys £10
Wine £60
Prosecco £18

marchingonwithmother · 19/12/2019 23:38

Crikey, so around £450. I've got the in laws coming and a friend and her family.

Told her I didn't need a contribution 🤔

formerbabe · 19/12/2019 23:50

Cooking for just us four...before visiting family.

I don't really drink and we have a bottle of champagne already...that's plenty for two of us.

So food...

Chicken for kids...I buy Lidl/Aldi chicken...get a whole one for about £3. Waits to be flamed.

Beef for me and Dh...probably £10-15

Veg...potatoes, carrots, parsnips...all 19p in Aldi apparently

Pigs in blankets...£3-4

Cranberry sauce/horseradish...£1 each I guess

Yule log...£4

Starter...smoked salmon for me and dh on Brown bread....£4 I guess

Not sure what starter to do for kids.

Won't cost much at all really.

I've hosted before and I do know how expensive it can be with more people...especially with booze

BillHadersNewWife · 20/12/2019 00:03

When I see threads like this I'm so relieved we hardly drink! Mil might have a bottle or two of fizzy wine ready but only about 3 people will have a glass. Nobody really drinks in our family!

gingersausage · 21/12/2019 12:42

@BillHadersNewWife I agree it seems to make a huge difference.. I’m not remotely sanctimonious about drinking (I love an all inclusive holiday Wink) but we just don’t drink much at home.

We’ve just had my parents to stay for 4 days so I did a huge “Christmas” lunch yesterday for 7 adults. The veg, potatoes and parsnips were 15p each item in Lidl, the chicken and the gammon were yellow stickered from earlier in the year and frozen, bacon and sausage for 40 pigs in blankets cost £3, stuffing and Yorkies made from scratch, Quorn roast and mushroom roast £2 each. There’s enough leftovers for another dinner. Obviously I’ll do the same again for actual Christmas for five adults so it’ll be slightly cheaper and I’ve got loads of snack food for Christmas Eve and Boxing Day so I don’t have to bother. I reckon I’ve spent around £100 for all of it.

BillHadersNewWife · 21/12/2019 12:54

Ha! We're going to MIL's so the only food I'm getting is the desserts for Christmas day at Mil's...which as we're in Oz will be cherries, cream and icecream....won't break the bank.

And then for Christmas Eve I will be getting us sushi and random party food plus fizzy drinks...extra cheese of course...Boxing day will be a roast dinner. We'd have that anyway! I only need more chocolate!

LucyLocketss · 21/12/2019 20:20

4 of us on Xmas day and 6 of us on Boxing Day

I have spent ...

M & S for the beef, sides and desserts - £144

Waitrose for the chicken (no turkey here!) and bits and pieces -£30

Aldi for the rest -£80 - and I'll be in Sainsbury's this weekend for orange juice , croissants and cinaamon whirls

So it'll be around £300 by the time I've finished which is more than enough! I consider myself relatively extravagant but a grand is quite the spend

dementedma · 21/12/2019 20:29

Spent 110 in Aldi today (which I didn’t think was possible), then an additional £70 in Asda. That included bottle of gin, top for my brother and cat food/toiletries.
£50 in Marks on turkey and a couple of Christmas Eve things.
made my own cake and friend gave me a home made pudding.
Already got a box of wine and half a dozen bottles of cava.
We will be 7 adults.

This is the most I have ever spent on Christmas and feel truly fortunate to be in a position to do it

Daisydoola · 22/12/2019 08:16

I'm being daring and I'm risking buying a turkey half price on Christmas Eve

My food shop is about £200 so far with just the turkey and stuffing to buy.

MinkowskisButterfly · 22/12/2019 19:37

I have pushed the boat out, spent probably £350 for two weeks for 3 adults (well 1 of those is a 17) and a child. That is chocolates and all the other treats, drinks, Christmas Dinner with all the trimmings, buffet food (Inc cheeses etc) for Xmas eve and boxing day and normal meals for the remainder of the holidays (and really nice steak for new years eve meal) . Some of the costs on here are just mind boggling imo.

Hairwizard · 22/12/2019 20:00

So i did the main food shop on sat night. Came to 160 odd. That was for the bulk of christmas food shop, mostly stuff you know will be out of stock come tmw morn!
Will prob spend another 50 or so between in there again in morn and greengrocers for the veg.
Think around 10-15 in bakery christmas eve and our butchers does a points scheme when you buy. So ive about 80 to spend from that which will be all the christmas meat etc. Plus they give us a voucher fir 25 quid as dp trains the owner and his bro and the wives!
That it . Feeding 5 adults and 2 kids christmas day then 7 and 2 boxing day. We arent big drinkers, dp side are pioneers so none for them. Im making most of it this year though as the last 2 christmases ive been pg. Already near finished a bottle of baileys i bought on sat!

RuggerHug · 22/12/2019 20:16

I know it was a while ago but as soon as I was an adult and hosted(never Christmas day) I had a whole new level of awe and respect for my DM having around 30 people every year. Was quite insulted at the idea of anyone offering money so what the hell did it costXmas Shock

We3kingsoforientareandabump · 22/12/2019 20:32

£300 but that was including the rest of the weeks shop and some alcohol.

Feeding 10 on Xmas day but 6 in the house anyway.

Itsfridgemas · 22/12/2019 20:36

It’s just the 4 of us to be honest,I spent 140 but that included a few gifts (bloody aldi middle aisle🙈) I normally spend 60ish on our weekly shop so I didn’t spend a whole lot extra!

Hairwizard · 22/12/2019 21:06

To the pp who spent 900-1000, how? Not being snarky/judgey, genuinely curious as to how, even if its m&s! That must be some spread you are putting onXmas Grin. Now i want to know what you are all having!
