And how many people

OP posts:
Titsywoo · 18/12/2019 00:06

For one day and 9 people I'll spend maybe 200-250 and that is with booze.

earsup · 18/12/2019 00:16

We don't drink alcohol so for 3 of us our Xmas day dinner will be about £30 total as also vegetarian so I make nut loaf and then it's just vegetables and roast potatoes and parsnips. One sponge pudding and a nice ice cream...I can't be bothered to buy all the nuts and cheese and fruit that nobody ever eats !!..can't believe people spend so much...I would rather spend the money saved on a flight .!!

goose1964 · 18/12/2019 00:30

Haven't a clue, we're 5 adults and a nearly 3year old. DH likes to be in charge and he buys enough stuff to feed the road for a month. We usually end up eating non perishables at the beer festival in July.

Christmastreejoy · 18/12/2019 03:43

Wow at the amounts here! We do Yule and all in I recon it’s about £200-250 for 14 people and that includes £125 party roast!

Christmas is just the 4 of us and I recon it’s costing less than 50

Mitsufishi · 18/12/2019 06:08

I had sixteen last year and spent £200. Overall Christmas budget when hosting is about £1000. But that includes tree, holly etc and gifts for 27 people and stockings for 8!

People brought cheese and snacks though. And I went mental with getting booze deals (all those subscription type things with first case free etc)

CherryPavlova · 18/12/2019 06:25

It all adds up certainly. It’s not just Christmas lunch though; it’s additional food and drink for several days with people staying. It certainly adds up and it depends what is included. You could do it quite cheaply if it is just 4/5 of you and just a bit extra to make it feel special or you can be extraordinarily extravagant.

Mumdiva99 · 18/12/2019 06:43

@bigbigboots some of it is the way we work out what is spent - you haven't included any Christmas breakfast, no second meal on Xmas day or boxing day, no crisps or snacks at all, no chocolates. You may have bought bits as the year progresses or have things in....I've added in mustard, cranberry sauce, horse radish, brandy butter etc Not massively expensive each one but it all adds up. I'm also curious what your other deserts will be that are costing £10 for 22 people....(I'm making tiramisu and that is more as the wine needed is £12 a bottle....as I say it all adds up).

Megan2018 · 18/12/2019 06:55

There is usually 6 of us Christmas Day and Boxing Day breakfast and usually costs us at least £100 a head. They are big drinkers though and we like nice things. I’m on mat leave this year so only doing a Boxing Day buffet for 9 with no overnight guests. I think that’s costing about £450 total. I have probably got too much booze but would hate to run out (I’m not drinking apart from the odd glass of fizz).

My Dad always contributes to the cost, £250 cash plus a case of wine when we do the full thing and £100 plus a case and a gammon this year. I couldn’t afford it otherwise!

AuntieMarys · 18/12/2019 07:00

Ws eat out Xmas Eve and Xmas Day.. 3 of us. Probably £275. Something veggie on Boxing Day after a 7 mile walk.
Drinks cupboard is always full but have stocked up on tonic.
Plenty of cheese, crackers etc if people drop in. £20 worth of Lindt pick and mix.
And away New Year.
I refuse to make it stressful.

christmasathome · 18/12/2019 07:02

We host my pil then there are two adults and two children so only four drinking alcohol. My in laws bring a bottle of wine, two if lucky and usually a bottle of fizz which is a gift from an elderly (recently deceased) relative.

They only stay for lunch so only three courses to provide but we could spend £100 on food/crackers etc then a good £30/£40 on drinks for the day.

My in laws will not understand how much it costs as xmas lunch at theirs was no starter, normal sunday dinner but with pugs in blankets and the only dessert is a tiny Christmas pud for two (traditionally my dh didn't eat xmas pud so they got used to buying a small one but never provided another one).

ThatsMySantaHisBeardIsSoFluffy · 18/12/2019 07:29

I know it's a typo, but this did make me smile: with pugs in blankets. I was wondering what size pugs you'd go for!

I tend to get the majority of our food and booze using discount codes and loyalty points from the supermarkets so don't spend huge amounts. The only order I definitely pay for is the Booths' stuff, but I try not to go too mad with that!

Home baking costs a fair bit though, but again, I mostly buy the ingredients with points.

When we host we only have 3 extra people, one of whom doesn't drink, one is driving and one doesn't drink much. They also don't eat huge amounts (though I think I tend to over-cater!).

We couldn't afford to spend £1,000+ on catering, so wouldn't put ourselves in that position!

Worldshohohokayestmum · 18/12/2019 07:49

Gosh probably no more than £250 and that's for the whole week, meals for the 23rd through to the 28th. That's Xmas Dinner and a full fry up on boxing day. Lots of cheese and Crisps and chocolate and snack food for the kids. Not much alcohol though as I'm the only one who can really drink due to others being on call or driving. Couple of bottles of mulled wine, some bucks fizz and mixers for the gin I already have in

EvaHarknessRose · 18/12/2019 07:57

I had to scale right back because it's so expensive hosting everyone. So frozen turkey crown, budget prosecco, Aldi fruit and veg, get guests to bring dessert/wine/Christmas crackers, ddad sends me a hamper and that always has a Christmas pudding and some snacks, sit on my hands and resist buying new plates/glasses/bedding/pillows.

Parker231 · 18/12/2019 08:00

Eva - some of the more budget priced Prosecco’s have won awards and also are the nicest. I’m getting the Aldi ones this year.

Ineedanamechange79 · 18/12/2019 08:00

I cannot fathom how anyone is spending so much. Usually £100 -£150 for 8 people. That's 6 adults and 2 children.

BacktoMA · 18/12/2019 08:01

£300ish for 3 days for 3 x adults, 2 x children.

Newbie1981 · 18/12/2019 08:03

200 on booze but it's 15 adults100 on meat and then the Tesco shop is 100. I reckon all the bits you get to top up and things you forget prob all adds to 500. Shit, didn't really wanna see that written down haha

TheGinGenie · 18/12/2019 08:04

I spent £80 for 10 of us. Don't eat meat and I already have alcohol though.

HairyToity · 18/12/2019 08:04

Wowsers. I think Christmas shop is about £150 extra, including turkey and drink.

666onmyhead · 18/12/2019 08:39

My £75/£100 per head is for the whole day of Christmas - or Boxing Day - or NYD etc . ( breakfast / main meal /nibbles / supper) So maybe I am shopping at the wrong places ? I order from local farm and local patisserie, local grocer and a mix of supermarket stuff ( Sainsbury's/Waitrose /Tesco and maybe a few bits M&S )

Might re think and see if I can cut it down a bit ?! My daughter swears by Aldi and Lidl - so I might look in there to see what's good . I know the gin gets good reviews !

Megan2018 · 18/12/2019 09:48

If my lot didn’t drink it’d be cheaper for sure, 2 bottles fizz or wine at least per person plus spirits is fairly standard over about 14hrs here. So thats about £30 a head just on that as a minimum. Then we have nibbles, lunch, supper, cheese and a big Boxing Day breakfast. Our cheeseboard was about £10pp as we have a big selection and we all adore cheese!

We don’t entertain often though and rarely eat out during the year so we like to have lovely things at Christmas.

We also only buy expensive, local meat that has high welfare standards, our usual turkey is about £15 a head plus we have a gammon at around £5pp

Titsywoo · 18/12/2019 10:17

2 bottles of wine per person?! You must all be wankered by the end of the day! Grin

Charlottejade89 · 18/12/2019 13:33

we are hosting althoughvjust myboartners parents for lunch, plus us 2 and our toddler dd. my partners children will be over in the afternoon but not having lunch here. Were jot massive drinkers so just a few bottles of wine/prosecco and beers. I'm hoping to get everything for under £150 and that will be food for the week as well. I shop at aldi and we had a lovely dinner with stuff bought from there last year. I dont think we even spend £1300 on Christmas altogether Blush

livingthegoodlife · 18/12/2019 13:36

About £240

£200 Waitrose shop and additional £40 cheese hamper

For 5 on Christmas day and and 22 (eek!!) On boxing Day.

Only includes booze for the original 5, everyone else brings their own.

EvaHarknessRose · 18/12/2019 19:12

@Parker231 my annual hamper from my Dad arrived today and I am thrilled as he has chosen an Aldi one (with Prosecco)!
