Stocking-fillers for an awkward 16-year-old boy please

I need to get a few bits and bobs for my best friend's son. His main present from us will be cash towards driving lessons, but his mum is struggling a bit this year and they have no other family, so I want to make sure he has a few surprises to open on Christmas morning. He's blooming awkward though - he has autism (very high functioning) and he's not really got many interests beyond the games he plays online. Not interested in books, music, fashion, toiletries etc., and he can't eat chocolate because of food intolerances. Any ideas for small quirky things that he might enjoy?

Thanks! I've got him a mug and a keyring already. Touchscreen gloves are a good idea, as he has long waits for the bus to college some mornings. I'll have a look at the other things. More ideas welcome!

The games he plays online, they might have the FunkoPop figures would he like those? Loads of games/films/tv have characters done.

Spied · 17/12/2019 16:06

Great idea pp.
I was going to suggest merchandise related to the game and the console he likes to play on.

mumontherun14 · 17/12/2019 18:21

Box set of dvd's or gifts related to an interest, my 15 yr old is getting stuff to do with Man United, the Avengers movies, Stranger Things and Fifa/Xbox . He also likes comedy so some stand up dvds or funny films. What about a cinema voucher or for a chlothes shop? Toiletries, sweets, socks always go down well here too x

Would he be interested in Rubik cube type puzzles, if you think he would have the patience etc to learn to solve it. It may sound a bit 1980s for today's teenagers but my son (nearly 15) and a few friends do speed cubing, there are loads of online Instagram groups etc. There is a cube with Wi-Fi connection that allows you to compete online with others, and gives you tutorials etc. That one is about 30 pounds, which may be a bit expansive but there are lots of cheaper ones and packs with several in. Bit odd but maybe quirky enough Xmas Smile

My ds with autism loves these and has multiple sets. He also likes this

One of those retro computer game gadgets based on the 1980/90s games. www.urbanoutfitters.com/en-gb/shop/orb-gaming-retro-handheld-console2?category=games&color=000&type=REGULAR

Slightly annoyed that it is now half price.

Leeds2 · 17/12/2019 19:39

Retro, or American, sweets instead of chocolate.
Tube of Pringles.

Have you seen the Sherlock Holmes themed puzzles? I really want one but have got one for my 13 year old nephew instead. They’re like box shaped safes that you need to crack by moving the parts.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 18/12/2019 10:44

I also wanted to say , OP , you sound a kind soul.
What you are doing for this young chap is true Christmas spirit . Merry Christmas to you, your friend and her DS.
