Perfume recommendations for a 16/17 yr old that isn’t overtly ‘sexy’?

Snooks1971 · 04/12/2019 19:50

My niece would like some perfume for Christmas and I have no idea! A bit of background; she is 16 and 17 next year but has some SEN and is socially more like 13 ish. Hence I don’t want to necessarily go down the Beyoncé/J-Lo route but need something light and glam looking (impressive bottle) that she will wow at.
Oh and budget is 20-25! Any ideas please?

Britney Spears perfumes tend to be quite sweet smelling and bottles are pretty cute. I know you don’t want to go down jlo route so not sure if this counts. Also, little mix and Ariana grande have scents out if she’s a fan of their music. Otherwise something like Calvin Klein sheer beauty is a pretty light frangrance.

SJP Lovely

But sure what you meant about Jlo and Beyonce but Jlo Glow is lovely, very fresh.

Angel by Thierry Mugler

Go into Boots and smell them all and see what fits the bill.

The apple shaped one in an apple bottle. It's by DKNY, there's loads of flavours (green is fresh, non sexy and v v popular) and the pink ones are flowery.
Avoid anything with Night in the title, will be too much for 13 yr old.
My vote is green apple.

Sillyshell · 04/12/2019 20:07

Daisy? Think it's by Marc Jacobs, they are quite light and fresh smelling and the bottles are lovely

groovejet · 04/12/2019 20:08

Ari by Ariana Grande is a nice bottle and not an overpowering scent.

Or there seems to be some good offers on a lot of Marc Jacobs perfumes, the bottles are very cute, superdrug has the honey perfume for £26.

I know you don’t want sexy, but all Year 7-9 girls at my school carry around massive bottles of Victoria’s Secret spray. They’re about a tenner, she will love it.

PortNStilton · 04/12/2019 20:13

Ignore the branding. Celebrity fragrances aren’t always sickly sweet and can be lovely.

JLo Glow is a lovely white musk based fragrance. Very soapy and clean.

Ariana Cloud is a herbal, astringent opening and creamy coconut in the drydown. It is often mentioned as a cheap dupe for Maison Francis Kurkdijan Baccarat Rouge, which costs £200+.

DKNY, Paul Smith and L’Occitane do some nice, bargainous, fresh fragrances that steer away from fruity, sugary, gourmand or heavy fragrances if that’s what you mean by ‘sexy’?

Don't really know what you mean by sexy? Just get something floral in a nice, go to a perfume shop and see what's on offer or Superdrug/boots/supermarkets have good deals on celeb ones

Snooks1971 · 04/12/2019 20:19

Thanks all, you are steering me in the right direction!
@Elieza I just haven’t got the time free to do this unfortunately (I wish)
@Cocolapew sorry if I sound clumsy and vague but she is adopted and has some ongoing issues

Rep the ‘sexy’ ref in my OP maybe I’m overthinking it because of her background
Thanks for all the suggestions they are much appreciated because I’m not a perfume person!

Daisy by Marc Jacobs (or one of its variants)?

Cocolapew · 04/12/2019 20:22

No problems, I wasn't sure if you thought the perfume would smell too strong Smile.
B and M have a nice Ted Baker reasonable priced atm..

insufferablefury · 04/12/2019 20:29

If you want real fragrance to impress, I would go for the classic brand. I loved this as a teen.

I think I need to get something slightly generic because she might think (and declare openly) that Ariana is childish but at the same time not aspire to J Lo. Teens are so into branding, prob rather than the actual scent and I want to get it right. Bless her, she’s full of paradoxes

@insufferablefury I can’t afford this for myself even! Thank you though it’s a good call Smile

I couldn't find the right link, but they do have cheaper versions, like smaller bottles. I normally won't spend more than 30 !

And Paco Rabanne Ultraviolet
Lord I'm old.

Pinkbonbon · 04/12/2019 20:41

I would have said juicey couture viva LA juicy - the original and the soire versions. Or the eu toilettes. Not sure about how they are for prices though.

The DKNY ones though are defo another good choice. Or Nina ricci (the one with pink bottles shaped like apples).

Cocolapew · 04/12/2019 20:41

My 18 yo DD is into CK and Tommy Hilfiger atm.
