Who does a Christmas/North pole breakfast on the 1st?

For a few years now I have done my children a 'Christmas breakfast' on the 1st December! We don't have an elf so I don't call it a 'Northpole breakfast' but it is pretty much the same.

I decorate the table and I have silver chargers that I put the food on - Christmas tree crumpets, mini mice pies and gingerbread men. This year I'm doing them a 'candy cane' of sliced strawberries and banana. I always put a little chocolate figure next to their place. They have Christmas plates and bottles I will get out. On the table will also be their Christmas card from me and their advent calendar (traditional picture one). They love it and it gets us all in the festive mood. Anyone else?

I normally do it on the weekend before Christmas. This year I've managed to get an elf egg cup with a little elf hat. I will also have Christmas crumpets if I can find some in time and maybe ds fav cereal. I decorate the table with elf themed decorations. I leave some sweets but not too many. Pinterest is a good place to get ideas for the north pole breakfast.

Breakfast on the 1st December at our house is:

Normal breakfast and the chocolate from the advent calendar.

Inthemoment38 · 28/11/2019 16:16

I have caused the man sitting next to me on the train to become quite uncomfortable due to laughing out loud at this thread. Really funny comments from team grinch (I am on team grinch too).

No wonder we can't sort Brexit (or anything else) out in this country when a discussion about someone's breakfast becomes this adversarial, on mumsnet!

For my two pennorth... I bloody hate all this extra made up bollocks like beauty product advent calendars for adults (now that's plastic tat for landfill if ever I saw it) and that fecking creepy elf. And lots of stuff like Xmas eve box is a thinly veiled marketing trap in my eyes.

But a Christmassy breakfast strictly single use plastic free does sound sweet and why not if OP likes it.

Merry Christmas everyone.

@pinkys - I remember the lammetta covered tree and angel hair too! Not sure how we coped without Christmas crumpets, though! Wink

Not here - we save special for Christmas, not because we don't like what other people do, but because we enjoy OUR traditions the way we do them.

each to their own.

stucknoue · 28/11/2019 16:31

Never heard of it but I bet my DD's will be up for it, they are adults so can do the cooking!

geordiejock · 28/11/2019 16:34

Good for you OP, I think it's nice for families to have their own little traditions! I might even steal this idea as an excuse to start heavy drinking and falling out with my in-laws even earlier in the year. Now, where's that port?

Leflic · 28/11/2019 16:38

Op obviously do what you like.

I can totally see why people are sniffy about it though.
No, a banana and strawberry “candy cane” is not particularly commercialised. However it feeds the idea that Christmas has “started” and this then is another factor in the over production of what is in reality 3 days.
It’s all very well saying it’s a magical time that derservres to be celebrated all month. But it’s not at all. There’s now loads to do, there’s an expectation of more decorations, nicer cards, better food etc that has lent itself into a frenzy that now goes on from Ni ember onwards. Not to mention it all has to environmentally friendly now.
Shops are crowded, car parks are chocker, people are broke, families are stresses, retail/events/ service staff are all worked to the bone.

I have been to Barcelona a few times just before Christmas..They celebrate a week after. But whilst the city is beautifully decorated and feels Chrustmasy there’s none of that absolutel panic you get a week before Christmas here. And it’s marvellous.

WatcherintheRye · 28/11/2019 16:48

Op, on MN as in RL, only those bitter about their own lives are driven to make nasty comments about others'. Take no notice, and enjoy your Christmas. I bet lots of people will be adopting a Dec 1 Xmas breakfast tradition after reading your thread! Sadly not me, as none of the (teens and twenties) dc in our house seem to emerge before lunchtime at the weekend these days! Grin

The thing its always been like this, as long as I can remember. My mum and her friends were having frenzied meltdowns in the 80s with the stress of it all. Christmas is, in our culture, a Big deal. Many people want it to be a. Big deal for their children. How can you achieve that without a bit of inconvenience, a bit of stress?

If you can’t cope with other people doing things without feeling pressurised to copy that’s your problem. Stop being so wet.

BoobsInHiding · 28/11/2019 17:10

I think there’s a huge link between the desire to celebrate Christmas earlier and more extravagantly and the nations mental health. We are so desperate to be happy. It pushes you to try harder with this time of year which could help or less to more stress but I don’t just think it’s consumerism I think it’s driven my poor standards of daily living and mental health the rest of the year

@leflic - I don't really think a breakfast at the beginning of advent says 'christmas has started' any more than the vast array of advent calendars do. For us it is just the beginning of the countdown to Christmas which I'm sure most children get excited about.

Evilmorty · 28/11/2019 17:30

Exactly that, the advent calendars say exactly the same thing. It’s just a lovely breakfast, I can’t see any sinister trend or undertones for commercialism or the demise of society. If OP had balloons and poppers and a parade maybe, but this is just a lovely new tradition with her children. All traditions started somewhere after all.

I think off the back of this, I’m going to do one as well. I like the look of the Grinch pancakes!

blue25 · 28/11/2019 17:37

What? That’s ridiculous. When will it end?

ptumbi · 28/11/2019 17:41

Blimey! In my childhood we had 6th Dec (St Nicklaus night) when chocs were left in our shoes overnight, all 4 Advent sundays were celebrated, a plate with mince pie and carrot for Rudolph left on 24th Dec, an Advent calendar for every day (not choc, pictures) and gifts on 25th Dec.

We had no room left for Christmas eve boxes, North Pole Breakfasts, Elves, Advent calendars with gifts in for every single day....Hmm

Now I have 3 kids who luckily are a bit too old for the Elf, the Eve box, the constant enforced fun, the constant enforced spending, the mountain of plastic, the endless food - BUT, we still have a good time and mark the occasion. The actual one, on 25th Dec.

Leflic · 28/11/2019 17:46

Exactly. As a nation we already all have advent calendars.

And they’ve ramped up to chocolate for kids and gin/ perfume/ make op for adults.
There was nothing wrong with the picture ones. Pictures are beautiful and exciting to little eyes. But somehow in a world full of chocolate and sweets we think the chocolate ones are nicer.
And now people are saying this us how traditions start...so you know full well the impact it might have.

Evilmorty · 28/11/2019 17:48

Because sitting at a table with your small children eating breakfast, is not the same as having a gift everyday. The gift here is love. That is why it is not commercialised “plastic tat”

Courtney555 · 28/11/2019 17:50

@Leflic

Spot on.

And this. I think it sounds nice.

Elbeagle · 28/11/2019 17:55

Guess what? I’m going to do a 1st December breakfast... but we have picture advent calendars! If you’ve bought into the consumerism of chocolate ones then that’s your problem 🤷🏻‍♀️

Evilmorty · 28/11/2019 18:01

I have a tea advent calendar and I love it. Why would anyone else care, it’s just so mean spirited and petty 😂 let people enjoy things!

BlueOooChristmas · 28/11/2019 18:06

@evilmorty That sounds amazing. I was eyeing up a marshmallow one the other day. I still have time to give in and order it. It would be my first advent calendar since I was a child.

Sadly many of the posts in here seem mean spirited and petty, I couldn't summon the energy to care what anyone else does or doesn't do to celebrate the season.

cwg1 · 28/11/2019 18:10

That sounds lovely, OP. Enjoy Flowers
