Self-fill crackers - what to put inside?

sweetheart · 19/11/2019 14:27

I was adamant we weren't having crackers this year filled with plastic tat that will end up in the bin.

So I have found some "make your own" crackers which are recyclable and now I just need to decide what to put in them. I have brough some liquor chocolates and am thinking maybe a scratch card each and I think I need 1 more thing to go in.

Any ideas?

I've got a small choc and a joke and will totally nick your scratchcard idea, then:
bottle opener keyring
handcream
mini bottle gin
mini aftershave
mini hand sanitiser
keyring screwdrivers
Nail varnish
lipstick

I was going to get some travel mini's to go in (body wash, perfume, facemask etc) - then I realised the reason i was doing this was because of the plastic tat - but isn't a plastic bottle just as bad? Even if it is useful and won't immediatly go in the bin. I'm torn!

I got the liquor chocs so there is some booze but much cheaper than buying the miniture bottles.

Lottery tickets or scratch cards.

www.amazon.co.uk/Buddies-Protector-Chomper-Accessory-Chameleon/dp/B07H3MVF95?tag=mumsnetforu03-21 These were really popular last year.

Leeds2 · 19/11/2019 18:32

Handkerchief.
A pound coin.
Packet of seeds.

Be1atrix · 19/11/2019 20:37

scratchcards/cash
pack of seeds
little bottle of jack daniels
a keyring from M&S
pandora charm
Harry Potter socks
mini benefit make up
reusable zippo handwarmer

Great thread, thank you!

I was planning on making my own crackers this year too (with dc helping!)

Can I ask where you bought your recyclable crackers please?

BrieAndChilli · 19/11/2019 20:46

Trolley token key ring
Glasses repair kit
Earnings
Egg timer
USB stick
Mini sewing kit

Be1atrix · 19/11/2019 20:49

@gymsloth mine were from dunelm.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 19/11/2019 20:50

I do miniatures and scratchcards in ours.

FixTheBone · 19/11/2019 20:52

Don't do what my mum did.

Sailing tools
Lock knives
Alcohol

Combined with the gunpowder in the snaps.

To take with me to America.

2 months after 9/11.

DelurkingAJ · 19/11/2019 21:17

I put Lego blind bags in (sorry, plastic, but reusable).

myolivetree · 19/11/2019 21:30

Bamboo toothbrush
Those clip on coins that go into supermarket trolleys
Lottery tickets
Bamboo cutlery
Booze miniatures
Nail varnish minis
Pound coins
Lip balm
Pull out charger cable
Foldable charger plug

Or take trip around Tiger Tiger if there is one near you. Filled with stuff.

GymSloth · 19/11/2019 22:19

FixTheBone Shock Grin

Be1atrix thanks for that. Would never have thought of Dunelm for some reason. Have looked at theirs online and they look great.

Love some of these ideas. Think I'm also going to do a mix of scratchcards, trolley coins and lip balms. Lego figures are a genius idea. Will add a couple for the dc.

Eckhart · 19/11/2019 22:24

@BrieAndChilli 'Earnings'. I'm in hysterics! Don't put them all in there!

WellTidy · 19/11/2019 22:27

Little pin badges. RSPB do some lovely wildlife, not just birds, ones. Usually next to till points in shops, my local hobby craft has one.

WellTidy · 19/11/2019 22:28

Do you have any hotel minis that you can pop in? Not that you would go out and buy, just your own stash. I had minis of beauty counter things that I put in ours last year.

BrieAndChilli · 19/11/2019 22:34

@Eckhart might as well!! Actually all my earnings will go to the school - donations for raffle prizes, school play dvd, pants money, Xmas dinner money, pound for this, pound for that!!!

I meant earrings!!

safariboot · 19/11/2019 22:37

Cracker contents can go flying, so I wouldn't put anything fragile.

Maybe it's just me, but I reckon trivia questions would be fun, as well as the joke.

I find the idea of lottery scratchcards a bit lame.

Honestly I think chocolate's the best bet, even though Christmas is already swimming in it. Seeds or bulbs are also a nice idea. A lot of the other stuff being suggested just still seems tat-ish tbh.

Alabasterangel6 · 19/11/2019 22:37

Avon purse perfumes. Anything with names on (plant the right cracker on the right plate though!) such as pens, keyrings with initals, etc.

If you use Lego packs stick a pinhole in the pack and you can squeeze the air out - they fit better. This works with any blind packs (playmobil etc).

Pieces of a small jigsaw in each one then you put it together on the table .

Clinique and other counters will give you some small samples and testers if you ask.

I owe you’s for a cocktail, glass of fizz

Raffle tickets then do a mini tombola after dinner

Charade prompts

Skinandbones · 19/11/2019 22:38

Master of malt do alcoholic mini sample bottles, different spirits and prices.

INeedNewShoes · 19/11/2019 22:40

I put in nice (not plastic) little Christmas decorations last year, plus a Lindor chocolate, hat and joke.

This year I'm putting in mini safety lights that you attach to your zip when out walking to be seen (family of walkers). These ARE plastic unfortunately but at least they're useful and I bought them from RNLI so charity benefits too.

sweetheart · 20/11/2019 09:38

I got these crackers

All recyclable except the snap and the ribbon (which could be used for other things)
