Ds aged 10 has asked for a Nintendo 3ds for Xmas..
Are these still a thing? Is it an “in” thing? I don’t want him to be disappointed in it.

Sorry it’s a 2ds xl!

Have you checked out a Switch instead??
We got ds 10 one for his birthday...

dementedpixie · 08/11/2019 11:30

You still get lots of older games for them but dont know if they'll be making new ones for it. Nintendo switch lite is probably the newest equivalent.

vickibee · 08/11/2019 11:30

it is a nintendo switch now isn't it? Think these are being phased out

FacebookRager · 08/11/2019 11:34

Ooh retro! I have one and the kids recently discovered it.

I then had to seek out another. Snapped one up from FB and the kids love them.

dementedpixie · 08/11/2019 11:36

I have to say my 2 kids still go back to their 3DS from time to time and are 13 and 16.

Switch lite is a handheld console
Switch connects to the tv too

dementedpixie · 08/11/2019 11:39

2ds xl is also much cheaper than switch/switch lite and there is a huge back catalogue of games. Just that no new games will come out for it

Foxton20 · 08/11/2019 11:40

This is the one he’s asked for.

I like the look of the switch but abit out of our price range 😩

The 2ds XL is a great little console. My DS played on his for a couple of years but just last week he got a Switch. I bought it Preloved as they are very expensive new. However, were it not for the fact that he wanted to be able to play on the TV (docking) I would have bought him a switch lite.
I would really recommend a switch lite. Lighter, smaller and cheaper but with the same games as the full switch
One word of warning tho, some of the games can be eye wateringly expensive but you can get cheaper ones in the e store and second hand games in places like cex. I don't know if the screen is the same as the switch but I'd recommend getting a tempered glass screen protector before using.
Hth

dementedpixie · 08/11/2019 11:50

The switch lite is nearly £200 without any games. 2ds xl would be a good introduction to console gaming

MollysMummy2010 · 08/11/2019 12:56

I recently got my daughter a ds from eBay and she loves it. She hadn’t had a console before so I didn’t want to spend loads and find she didn’t use it

ritzbiscuits · 08/11/2019 14:27

The Nintendo range is Switch and Switch Lite (handheld version) now. I looked on Argos, and there is no way I'd pay £135 for outdated tech! They aren't making new games for it, so you'll be looking at eBay and CEX to get hold of games in future.

Are you able to stretch to a Switch Lite, you may find the handheld console + a game for £200 if you shop around.

Otherwise, if funds are really limited I'd potentially look at a second hand one on eBay. I really don't think it's worth buying a 2DS new when they are so old.

TeenPlusTwenties · 08/11/2019 14:33

Check out CEX both for pre-owned 2DS and the games. I agree with the others they are outdated tech these days but ours still get a fair amount of use on holidays (especially airports).

UserPop · 08/11/2019 14:40

DD has had the 2DS for 2 years, we bought it from CEX. She absolutely loves it and plays it all the time. There are plenty of games for it, and it is compatible with old DS games.

Outdated means nothing when you can buy so many games second hand so easily, and so much cheaper! For the record, we also have a switch and DD plays them both, but her 2DS more.

gigglingHyena · 08/11/2019 15:21

Ours still get plenty of use. Probably more now that games are all second hand and therefore affordable on pocket money budgets.

The one thing which has been a disappointment for DS is that Game no longer stock preowned 3DS games, she he can't go and have a browse. Cex still has them, but we don't have a local branch. Getting parent to buy on Ebay isn't quite the same.

Lovemusic33 · 08/11/2019 17:01

Dd has the 3ds and the switch, she plays both but most games are now on the switch.

Bessiebigpants · 08/11/2019 17:09

My son (almost 15) recently dug his out to play Pokemon I think they must be having a revival because his friend was playing too!

Tryingtobeorganisedthisyear201 · 08/11/2019 17:15

My 14 year old has requested a switch this year but has had 3 years on his 3ds. Loads of games still available pre owned from CEX and game. If that's what he has asked for I would be inclined to get it rather than spend alot more on the switch. He can always upgrade in a year or 2 when they go down in price and he gets bored of the ds games

KilljoysDutch · 08/11/2019 17:30

Interestingly the 3ds/2ds is pretty easy to mod so you can play homebrew games on it. This can also be used (illegally) to play downloaded 3ds games from the internet.

BarbedBloom · 08/11/2019 19:07

I actually have a 2ds xl for animal crossing. Grin I agree to go to CEX as you can get good deals on practically new ones with boxes and a ton of games.

Yellowjammer · 08/11/2019 19:12

My ds loves his ds but he doesn’t know any different!

Diy2019 · 08/11/2019 19:15

My ds got that one earlier this year and he loves it. He got a good few new games for it since but was also able to pick up recycled games aswell.

safariboot · 08/11/2019 19:18

The 3DS/2DS is on its way out, but still around and a lot cheaper than the Switch. Plenty of really great games on the console, and a strong second-hand games market including with CeX. I was playing mine just the other week, just relaxing in Pilotwings.

It's arguably the console to have for Pokemon, nearly all the main series and many of the spinoffs can be played on it. (Although Pokémon games tend to be almost as much second hand as they were to begin with!)

TeenPlusTwenties · 08/11/2019 19:47

I use the DS for Professor Layton games as does my DD.

Stressedmummyof4 · 08/11/2019 20:03

@Foxton20 watch Argos on eBay, we picked up a refurb switch for my dd for her birthday for £125, I believe they also have Nintendo ds pop up some times too, they come with a 12 month warranty and they're refurbished by Nintendo and any problems you have it's Nintendo who fix, we had a slight issues with the charging wire which turns out was my fault Blushand Nintendo turned it around in 7 days. Can't fault honestly!
